FfH2 Bug Thread

Great... I'm completly new to FfH, and for the last 2 hours, I've been searching for the reasons behind his fire based area damage. Honestly, why didn't you release this? It completly ruins any game with a Doviello in it. I'm currently Infernal, and trying to defend my city with Mardero, Rosier, Hyborem, max number of beast of agares, max number of eidolons, some imps and a few defensive units (didn't have time to properly prepare for war, since I just switched to infernal). I use Rust several times, and wither with a hero.

I'm being attacked by lots of sons of asenas. And I have no chance. Right now, I'm not even sure I want to continue playing mods, because they always end like this.

You can get a fixed file from this post that will solve the exploding problem - http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=9730746&postcount=3966

Thx so much!

Also, I encountered something, and I'm not sure if it's a bug. As an Infernal, I can't declare war against the barbarians any more. I could do it in the first first few turns after switching, but now whenever I try to attack a barbarian, my unit just moves there, and there is no pop-up option for declaring. I don't mind it terribly in my current game, but I'm curious.

I'm fairly certain the turn doesn't matter ... its just a matter of certain conditions ...

namely ... either animal barbarians (if in base FFH), or regular barbarians that are *in your territory* ... again, in base FFH.

Usually trying to attack barbarians in Barbarian territory will never work. (base FFH)

-> ((If you have the Barbarian Trait))

Honestly I prefer for Barbarians and Demons to be separate ... due to the huge difference in terms of base gameplay ...

but that's as far as I would go ... imho Animals and Pirates can just be HN of regular barbarians (as opposed to separate factions).

I'm playing base FFH, and I tried to attack everything, and my units just moved. I tried it with a barb camp inside my borders (right next to one of my cities), and my unit moved. I tried it with a barbarian city, and my unit moved. I'm not sure about how the animals work late in the game, but in my game the barbarain cities are full of animals for some reason, and there are no more "free" animals around.

What's even more confusing is that my cultural border has the same color as the barbarian cities, and where our cities touch, there is not even a line for the border. It almost looks like, I'm barbarian, except I don't get visibility or any other benefits from the barbarian cities. I obviously can't control their units either. Hell terrain also doesn't spread to the area belonging the barbarian cities, that's the only way I can see if a tile is mine (except by checking the culture percentages).

Those animals in the cities were probably created with "Nature's Revolt", and so will not have hidden nationality. If you do find a HN animal then you can use it to declare war. Don't forget sea creatures.

If you can't find one, then you'll need to track down a Barbarian unit that is in unclaimed territory.

If there's absolutely no unclaimed territory left then you may be able to create some by burning down a city when there happens to be a Barbarian unit nearby.

If all else fails then you can get the Barbarians to declare war on you if you raise your score high enough (1.5x the score of the second place team, iirc).

So I am fairly new to FFH and have just been playing the last few weeks. I finally went Infernal this most recent game. Game was going fine til Avatar of Wrath showed up, at which point the game would not end the damn turn. After waiting for 30 minutes I just ctrl+alt+dlt out of Civ4. Went to open it back up and load the game and when it loaded the unit pics were removed from all units, leaving blank spots on all tiles. When I tried to play a regular game of Civ the same thing happened :( Am re-installing, but anyone have any advice?

IIRC to declare war to Barbarians when you have the Barbarian trait, you need to attack a Barbarian unit in the wilderness (namely, not in your territory or in a Barbarian-controlled area).

I also think Tholal's fix for the Sons of Asena should be provided in the first post, the issue is severe enough to disgust new players or people who simply do not have time to browse through the pages of this thread.

I just noticed this, or I would have commented earlier. Unless you are being immediately destroyed (which I assume is not the case, since you have Mardero), you can promote your heroes with Magic Resistance and the Resist Fire. Added to the innate demonic resistance to Fire damage, that will make you completely immune to the explode-on-death Fire damage from the bugged Sons of Asena. Of course, applying the fix is the best solution because then the SoA won't explode - but then Pyre Zombies will explode as intended, so this is still a useful trick to keep in mind if you end up on the wrong side of the Sheaim.

Reinstalling is a good idea, because it sounds like Civ4 is messed up somehow. That's probably not the cause of the endless turn, however. Although it does not happen every time, it is quite common for the appearance of the Avatar of Wrath to cause an endless turn or a crash. It can be very difficult to try to figure out exactly which unit(s) are responsible, so if that does happen the best thing you can do (imo) is reload from a save from several turns before and replay in the hope that you will get a better result (ie not a crash or endless turn).

I can't add anything to help more than Emptiness said, but I can explain a little bit.

Unfortunately, you have encountered what is often called the 'Avatar of Wrath' bug. If you search the forum, you will see quite a few references to it. As Emptiness said, it appears to be a hit-or-miss' issue. We know some games get an endless loop (sometimes called a 'WoC' error, standing for 'waiting for other civilizations', which flashes on the bottom of the screen endlessly) and sometimes it doesn't.

Unfortunately, we don't know how common it is, because people who don't encounter it usually don't say anything, and a lot of people don't get high AC's so they don't get the Avatar of Wrath often. Obviously, nobody knows for sure what is causing the bug. We do know that the Avatar of Wrath itself isn't causing the bug (if you go into the worldbuilder and kill the Avatar of Wrath, it won't help unfortunately).

The 'leading theory' is that it has something to do with all of the units that are getting enraged, but again that view is largely an educated guess.

I wish we could help more. For now, try the steps Emptiness recommends. However, I haven't heard of the bug causing other issues or affecting base Civ in any way, so you may be having a different issue.

If all else fails, send the save game from the turn before, two turns before, and the turn after, and I'll see if I can fix it, but I have the worst grade for this bug. I can usually fix other WoC bugs but I can't ususally for this bug. (This probably means that eliminating the unit or a unit that is causing the WoC means that a different set of units get enraged as the check goes to a differnt set of untis, making the bug effectively unfixable from the worldbuilder).

Best wishes,

Breunor

That can probably be tested quite easily - take a save from before the turn the Avatar appears, modify the XML so that Enraged doesn't do anything anymore, and see what happens. If that fixes the issue, we'll know that going enraged is what causes it.

Do I see/hear a volunteer? :-)

Sorry, I'm too old/computer illiterate to be taught these kinds of tricks!

Best wishes,

Honestly, uploading a save can sometimes be harder than making a slight change to the XML ;)

Yeah, I'm not sure why Kael hasn't released patch p... fortunately, there's a fixed Civ4UnitInfos.xml file posted somewhere in this thread.

Having waited this long for Patch P, I've developed a theory. Kael's new employer may have insisted that he do nothing to improve Civilization IV or V, including any mods, because that would make Civ more competitive versus other more-or-less similar games on the market, such as Elemental. Or Kael may have come to this conclusion himself, as you would expect his employer's success to be of keen interest to him. ;)

I think Kael was looking for new projects (FfH2 went into feature lock and maintenance mode) long before the opportunity at Stardock presented itself. Just my opinion.

Yes, I know you're right. He said as much.

Don't get me wrong. I don't blame Kael. Personally, I'm still hoping to read the novel he mentioned he was working on several months ago. :please:

Have you ever started a new job? What's more, have you ever started one in the computer gaming industry, immediately in charge of a major project that is already released and need a lot of work? Check out some of Kael's posts on the Elemental: War of Magic forums in relation to the patches on that game, and you'll see why he doesn't have much time or energy to spend on Fall from Heaven!

What I'm really curious about is what the new job means for the Fall from Heaven themed stand alone title so teasingly announced a few months back....
