FIFA World Cup and you?

No footy today. Wimbeldon on the radio, just cant bring myself to care.

Strange empty listless feeling....

I'm the same, do you reckon it's because there are no British players with a chance of winning or because in comparison to Football, Tennis is uber-dull?

but bozo said that if one team scores in the first minutes there's no point in keeping watching the game.
And Whomp said he was correct and tried to prove that with his world cup half time statistics
My stat was halftime but I'll stand by what Bozo said as well.
The bottom line is scoring first helps you win games. So far, teams that score the first goal of the game are 25-5-5 in this tournament.

And not only that, but in a low-scoring environment such as soccer, scoring any goal is crucially important. If you score, at all, you're probably going to win. Of the first 32 games played 22 were either shutout wins or scoreless ties.

So the way I see it... just score.
The alternative is to dive on the ground in dramatic fashion, have the ref hand out a red, get carried off on a stretcher so your team can get that crucial penalty kick....then return to the game within minutes of your shin miraculously heeling.

But that is the beauty of it. Whilst you jump about screaming when you've scored a goal, because you think you've won the match, there is still the nagging feeling that you could get beat. You quite rightly point out that this doesn't happen often in international games, but people are brought up on club matches where significant leads vanish in a matter of minutes.

It only takes a second to score a goal.

This thread is drifting way off topic by the way :whipped:

Agreed. Let me say I'm looking forward to your game against Portugal as well though I'm not sure how Rigo can headbutt someone and still play.

Don’t you understand that there are teams of very different levels of competence here? It’s not like US football where the best new players go to the worst teams to even everything up.

Therefore a team that is very much better than its opponent is invariably going to score first and then go on to win it, maybe 1-0, maybe more.
Your stats are quite meaningless as the teams are not equal to begin with.

So the way I see it… be better than your opponent.

27 times this tournament have two teams within 20 positions of each other in the world ranking played and produced a goal (or more). On these 27 occasions the team to score first has:
won 15 times
drawn 5 times
lost 7 times

Two of the 15 wins saw the first goal equalised, so you can cut that number down to 13.

So...
13 (2); 5 ; 7

13 times in 27 games between relatively evenly matched countries has the team scoring first held that lead through to victory. 14 times they have not.

I know what you mean. I have a day off, and I don't know how to spend it. There isn't a match to watch/sleep through this afternoon. The worst thing is, the next round is on Friday and Saturday, when I won't likely be able to get back home in time to watch.

I like a bit of Wimbledon actually. I have quite alot of patience for watching tennis.

Shame Tim is out so early this year though.

Back to the football, and I'm looking foward to the quarter finals, Argentina-Germany should be a good game.

Thanks for opening my eyes on this. :p

But jokes aside pheonix night pretty much sums it all up for me. :)

For the sake of fairness though I will mention that teams such as Greece have used the score a goal and defend strategy successfully (Greece won Euro 2004), and this is seen as a problem. However it is NOT gamebreaking - The most successful national team in the world, Brazil, is characterized by it's attacking football, and Greece failed to qualify for this year's World Cup.

As others have shown, the 'first goal wins' thing is not accurate at all.

The real problems are the diving and questionable refeeing. ;)

So I went to the pub, and was feeling good about myself, chatting up a couple of hippie chicks with a buddy.

Then he told me there was no football tomorrow.

More soddin Wimbeldon. First goal is nothing like as predictable as breaking serve seeded in a grand slam.

*Gin mutters sulking no football and didnt get leg over, not fair hurmpher. Tennis sucks on the radio, mutter sulk...*

Well, as for those saying that scoring the first goal is enough to win the game, I have few examples popping up in mind which proves it wrong:

Iran vs Mexico (first round): Iran scores first and finally Mexico wins 3-1.
Japan vs Australia (first round): Japan scores first and finally Australia wins 3-1.
Japan vs Brazil (first round): Japan scores first and finally Brazil wins 4-1.
Mexico vs Argentina (round of 16): Mexico scores first and finally Argentina wins 2-1.
Spain vs France (round of 16): Spain scores first and finally France wins 3-1.

So the latest instance of Football infesting every walk of life came this morning. Driving to work I see a notice on the side window of a Police Car which said "Know the Score... Don't go out on penalties", along with a picture of a speeding sign as a football :crazyeye:. So now even the 5-0 have jumped on the bandwagon. I like football in the main, I feel sorry for those who hate it :hammer2: :gripe: :aargh: [pissed]

The first goal was after half time though so clearly it doesn't count. ;)

Im in trouble. The Brazil game starts at 3PM where I live...but I have a huge performance from 2-330. After taking down my drumkit and mics, and talking to everybody who came, i might end up missing most of the game!

Brazil BETTER win
