It's summer and there's a bit of extra time for watching films.

So, I saw this trailer:

while nothing to be too excited about, I like the tone of it. I thought it felt like it brought some inspiration from Valhalla Rising and a bit of Dead Man. Sort of dreamesque. There aren't that many of these films. I know Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is pretty trippy too, but pretty different to these movies.

Spoiler :
violence in this one:

Is there something else in the vein of this that I've missed?

If you'd like suggestions for yourself, ask away.

Ooh, Di Caprio. He's grown into a big man, indeed.
The movie looks neat.

It's probably not as "intense" but the trailer made me think of Terence Malick's The New World.
Ever seen that one ?
A candidate for masterpiece status (as are all of Malick's movies).

Other than that, The Proposition by John Hillcoat might come to mind.
Or some of Kurosawa's medieval epics (Ran and Kagemusha are personal favourites).

I've only seen Ran of those mentioned. The other ones look interesting, especially the Proposition. I seem to have totally missed that one. I'll keep an eye out for Kagemusha and the New World too. Thanks.

And the trailer doesn't give away much. Frontier movie, set in the period leading to the civil war?
There's more than the time period in the trailer. Sounds, music, tone of colour/filters, bleakness, contrasts. Some directors seem to aim for a certain emotion. Not sure if it's the trailer or if the actual movie will end up like this, but it has a certain tone imo. I kind of felt like seeing something like it but there aren't that many like these.
