First Look: Kongo

What is that tile just south of the river at 1:21. Looks like a winding path up a hill. A quarry? first time I've seen that representation of one if it is.

I was wondering about that as well. It does look neat with the path up into the mountains. No idea what it is though :)

I think it's a quarry. You also see (modern?) farms, mines, lumber mills and plantations in that section of the video.

In that interview that revealed the leader agenda, the woman being interviewed mentioned that the Great Person point increase was "double", so I'm guessing that means that Great Artist and Great Merchant points are doubled for the Kongo.

Squeeee! I'm so excited! I love this Civ! I can now die happy and go to Civ Heaven, if I'm not already there.

So I think this First Look just adds more fuel to the fire that multiple leaders are a thing for Civilization VI even though Firaxis hasn't confirmed the feature yet. While Mvemba doesn't get access to the Holy Site district, I feel that if they put in another Kongo leader down the road, say Nzinga, then the Kongo civilization would have access to the Holy Site district in addition to other bonuses.

Other than that, very happy to see a new civilization get a chance to be represented in the franchise. Can't wait to see how they play out against other civilizations.

What is going on in the lower-left corner here?:

I assume you meant the glowing things. It's rice, but the camera's lighting makes it looks shiny.

As I look at it, one of the strengths of Kongo is the district cost. They don't have Holy Site, which other civs invest into. They have unique neighborhood, so it doesn't increase the district cost and it's the only district which could be built multiple times in one city.

The bonuses for Kongo look really powerful. They are still passive, though and overall Kongo looks like the most boring civ so far.

A very good looking leader. The quality of different leaders differ I can see, as if they were put together by two different people?

Friderick and Philip II were disappointing as far as animations/art is concerned.

Kongo looks like a really fun Civ to play. Culture, great people and growth will be cool. Not being able to build Holy Sites is a little weird as they surely had animist or some kind of religious beliefs before they converted, though.

They will also be fun to play along with. It is interesting that their agenda is one of the few positive ones. That is a refreshing change. It'll be nice to make friends with him merely by spreading your religion to him.

His look and animation seem pretty good.

Overall, I am pleased with Kongo. :)

You can't build Holy Sites... but you can invade people who can. Very interesting. Can you build the buildings if you capture a city that already has the site?

Time will tell if this civ is well balanced. I really like how varied it is though. I do have to admit it makes me yearn for more African civs, given how Euro this particular leader is.

Ana Nzinga would be the leader to a civilization called either Angola, Ndongo or Mbundu. She wasn't Kongo nor she ever lead the Kongo people. Don't mistake the two different peoples / civilizations just because they lived in the same overall region.

True. Though we have seen Firaxis make historical stretches / mistakes with civilizations and leaders before.

To be fair, Anna Nzinga and Mvemba were related.

Plus, with a Macedonian leading Egypt and a Kurd leading Arabia, not to mention an Italian leading France, it wouldn't be that much of a stretch. ;)

Is it just my impression that the abilities got more complex with the last reveals? The first civs where easy to understand and it's clear what to do to be most efficient with them. Spain already was more complex, and now with India and Kongo no one is sure how powerful it is. Also, the strategies to try seem more diverse. If that continues, it would be awesome.

I thought the same thing - and thought that maybe we will have "lower difficulty" and "higher difficulty" civs this time around. The only question is whether the AI will know how to handle them.

It's a completely different thing.

If I understand what he is saying, it would be more like Cleopatra and Saladin leading the same civ, because they both occupied the territory of modern Egypt.

I think it's that he gets the founder belief of the majority religion in his empire.

That's indeed what the reveal video is saying, but the interview seems to suggest you get all the founder beliefs. I would assume the reveal video is more likely to be correct, but not sure.
