First Look: Kongo

India can just conquer cities with the religions it wan't and the train apostels for that religion. So it is not really luck based.

I was skeptical about the leader choice of Afonso I, but I think they have done a very nice job of it all. They turned what I feel is his weakness (to adopt an other civs culture and religion) to his trait on a way that seems interesting.

The UU and UI seems great as well. I only hope that mbanza needs jungle or gets a bonus from jungles, since it would feel more flavor full of they do.

I can't help feeling a bit proud since I think that my popular mod have Kongo as popular as it is so hurrah for me! ;)

Well, that's a curveball.
I wanted to play a new civ in my first Civ 6 game and find Scythia is too military focused. That leaves Kongo, but they may be a bit too "interesting". I'm sure they are pretty good. Who doesn't like a high population and economic bonuses ? It's just that maybe Kongo isn't the best choice until I am a bit more experienced ?
You get bonuses for Relics, you get free Apostles that can give you Relics, but you can't build Holy Sites and put those Relics in Temples ? Some warmongering may be required to make the best of the UA.

Ah, screw it. I'll play Kongo first. I'll just ignore Astrology and beeline Currency right after Animal Husbandry and/or Mining to get those Great Merchants. Then I'll get Iron Working and just conquer whoever is close enough and founded a Religion with beliefes that suit me. I may also take other civs' cities just because they have holy sites.
I wonder if you can get a Religious Victory if you haven't founded a religion yourself but own the Holy City.

Awesome design, one of my favourite civs now.

I have one question though. In the ending summaru the narrator says Kongo can create much better cities around rainforests and woods.

...but none of Kongo's uniques mentions any economic benefits to forest cities???

So why did she say that?

Other than that I just wanted to say Iove the fact he is so "african", I was afraid he'll be wearing european clothes, or be called afonso, or even speak portuguese.

Has to do with the replacement of the neighbourhood improvement it gives more housing so you can have more population if you settle next to jungle you olso get more housing thats why

1. Norway is a new civ too.

2. Kongo could be quite good as a first civ to play. You'll explore part of the game (without religion) and will be able to play truly religious civ second.

I feel a little underwhelmed for some reason. I don't like leaders with disadvantages, and Kongo doesn't really seem to have much of a unique playstyle. It's a cool inclusion in the game but I think they could have been made more flavourful. Maybe that's just me though.

Free bonus Great Merchant points makes this my favorite civ of all time :3 But I would like to know how many points it delivers :(

it's +100% apparently and not free Great Merchant points. This wasn't said in the first look, but at an interview from PAX with PC Gamer.

Wow, Kongo is so strong they had to nerf him before release

But really that UA is pretty powerful. An alternate leader (either modded or dlc) that can actaully build holy sites would be ridiculously good with the added faith generation for apostles and artists.

That's one of the reasons why I think we'll not see second leader for Kongo in DLC. The other reason is what it would have quite low selling value.

My idea to play as Kongo is to have as many trade routes, commercial hubs and Great Merchant points as possible. I will go for Big Ben to double the amount money I have and for democracy to get 50% discount on buying Great People for gold, and then buy many Great Scientists for Science Victory :)

Just remember that Great People don't work the same way as before, each have unique bonuses and abilities.

Reveal video is totally unclear. In the interview they use the word "every", so it looks like you get every one of them.

Also, speaking about Apostles - it's possible they are generated with the religion which is major in the city they're born in.

Not Kongo is passive, but it's abilities are passive. You have very few unique gameplay, other than Mbanza placement. They don't have any specific choices and even have the choice of buying Great People with faith removed and replaced with passive bonus.

Even America looks more interesting with its Legacy Bonuses planning (if those bonuses will be valuable in the game).

But they can still buy Great People with Gold and they will have a lot of it:)

Well I certainly was not expecting a new First Look video this weekend, let alone Kongo being the subject civilization.
Overall they look interesting so they are continuing that trend with each reveal, but I do hope that we start moving away from all these faith related civilizations for the next couple reveals.
