I've recently been getting into this genre, in particular with IL2 Sturmovik, Microsoft Flight Simulator and again with X-Wing

I'm looking for what people percieve to be the best - in all fronts - flight simulators. From the old prop planes to modern jet fighters, to science fiction versions.

I can't find a good modern combat simulator nowadays. It may be my own prejudice (I prefer dogfighting dammit, not killing them off a mile away) but I'd like to know other people's experiences with this genre...

The only simulator that I have is Microsoft Train Simulator. I do have Air Warroir II (A Dog Fighting Sim that spans from World War I to the Korean War), however the graphics are crappy by today's standards.

How is Train Simulator? My friend and I constantly joke about it, simply because you're simply going back and forwards on a set track.

Flight Simulator is proving strangely addictive though. I can't quite understand how, though I'm off on a real time trip from Aberdeen to London. So far so good, though I dread the landing ;)

Quinzy: I don't like the aircraft in Battlefront, with the exception of the snowspeeders at Hoth. I much prefer the ground levels.

Yeah, I've got the demo for the new one. It's gonna have multiplayer cockpits. Time for real-time flights to Australia with my old flatmate :D

Learn to whore jets in battlefield 2.

Oh I do

Especially since I've now got a joystick, it means I can properly dogfight my way across the skies. Although I usually have more fun being the copilot in the bombers or helicopters.

I always end up getting back into Flight Simulator. I can go months without playing it, and then I'm playing it daily for a month or so before I stop again.
I don't do real time trips though, I use the Learjet and try to max out it's range when I play it. I think the range of the jet is listed at 2200nm, but I'm always trying to push it to 3000nm. It's always fun landing knowing that you only have one shot at it, and that you may end up not even having any fuel for the landing. :)

Kinda similarly, in IL2 Sturmovik there are times I've been badly damaged and am leaking fuel. I much prefer trying to glide and ditch my plane in a field rather than bailing out, it's a great challenge. And I'm sure my commanders appreciate my efforts to bring the plane back as complete as possible :)

Haven't tried it with Flight Simulator yet though.

It's an adventure in MS Flight Sim trying to land with no fuel. In the Learjet, there's only so much power contained in the batteries before they run out, so once you're out of fuel, you better drop down the landing gears before the batteries die.
I typically fly using just VFR, but with a pre-planned GPS direct route to the destination airport. Using IFR tends to reduce the maximum range of the Learjet due to FTC staggering your ascent to cruising altitude.

Jane's Apache Longbow was the sht some ten years ago or so. I think they also realeased Longbow 2 what got pretty good reviews. It has deacent graphics even comparing to more modern sims and it's all in all realistic and good flight sim, check that out.

And there's allways Falcon 4.0 ;) Su-27 Fulcrum 2.0 realeased '99 is also worth to have a look :)

I suggest to also take a look in this site, where are listed perhaps all combat/civ flight sims from 80's to this day:

Excellent site :goodjob:

Made it to London at last. Even landed properly, though on the wrong runway...I did wonder why another plane was taking off on it as I approached...<cough>

OBVIOUSLY this means I'm ready to move up a gear, and I'm doing a real-time flight from London to Moscow...in a 747. :mischief:

ATC is your friend, and so are the maps of the runways. :)

Or, use IFR and have ATC assist you.

Though having another plane on the runway when you're landing can happen, even with IFR, if you're approaching the runway too quickly. ATC is kind of slow to tell you to go around in the game. I'm usually already aborting the landing in those situations prior to ATC even telling me too.

I'm pretty certain it was because I was landing on the wrong runway than the one I was told to :mischief:

Was it Heathrow airport ?
Alot of runways at that airport, and it can be confusing, especially if you don't approach the airport properly and get in the right landing pattern.
