Flying Blind - A world-building exercise

a Cypriot Caravel, poking around the Chinese sea asks to see if China can give Cyprus any hints so as to cope with a lack of resources.

What resources are you lacking? Venetian merchants would be happy to trade.

I believe that they are, as an island nation that lacks resources, trying to become self-sufficient and become a leading player in technology, which will be pretty damn difficult if I must say so myself.

we have barely anything of note. and thats as of 2013, before the collapse so we may have even less stuff.

we can trade in the resources that we lack for money.

(OOC: maybe playing as a resource poor island wasn't such a best idea..)

I have an idea on how to solve your problem of being a resource poor island in the middle of the Mediterranean (which is most likely, due to severe global warming, even more of a desert than before).

which is what? besides expanding, it would make the whole RP useless.

Spoiler :
Raid the living crap out of Venice, Egypt, Cordoba, and Sparta.

Or alternatively I guess you could use your superior navy to force anyone to give you tribute. This is only if you are planning on becoming a major power. As an island nation who will not expand, you have chosen the Hard Way to become powerful. You gotta be mean, otherwise other people will just walk all over you.

Raid the living crap out of Venice, Egypt, Cordoba, and Sparta.

hahahaha, good one, as if we have the capability to raid all 4 nations without a single response.

that's a no.

Raid just Egypt then.

You have more ranks in navy than anyone else in the Med! Surely you must be planning on using them somehow.

Alternatively what you could do is to use sand and copper as a natural resource and reactivate some semiconductor/electronic plants after you build some electric generators of some sort.

But don't do that, because then I would be displeased.

You can also become...

A center for middle-man based trade
An economic center/bank, with a navy to defend stored treasure
A manufacturing center, turning raw materials into cooked materials
A prison, accepting payment for storing prisoners from other states
A Shipyard, like manufacturing but focused purely on building quality ships for yourself and others

etc etc etc

I like the prison idea.

Tad late, my apologies.

Considering how chaotic my life is at the moment (I'm packing to move, and then I'll suddenly be very busy), I will do this update sometime soon, then open up the game to be a sort of RP-based diplomacy/hiatus round, until things get a little less busy (or, at least, until a schedule gets established on my end).

Just a bit of RP'ing.

Various Letters from Venice

A letter to the leader of Irakleio:
Spoiler :

To the Leader of Irakleio,

Greetings from the New Republic of Venice! It is wonderful to see that a great port like this has managed to survive through all of the turmoil from the past several hundred years.

Venice has begun trading its many resources with the neighboring entity of Cyprus, and our merchants lack a reliable stopover port. Irakleio is in a perfect position for that, and as a result, we need possession of the city and surrounding areas. We would financially recompensate you and your citizens, of course, and we would wish for the transition to be as smooth as possible.

If you refuse our reasonable offer, we will send in our massive navy to blockade the entire island of Crete, then invade with our army and subjugate the island. If this happens, a massive military occupation will occur until our terms our accepted, and rule will be extremely direct.

However, if you accept, we will only take direct control of a pier area for our merchants and navy. The entire island will be given near autonomy, as long as it remains loyal to Venice. Our merchants will be happy to trade with your farmers and miners in the countryside at very favorable rates, and we will try not to impose on civil rights. The island will have a Venetian governor, but the cities and towns will all have elected Cretan mayors. This approach would be much more favorable, because it is nonviolent and almost nothing would be felt in everyday life.

Please send us your answer. Crete's fate depends on it.

Sincerely,

Teodoro Trevisan I, 1st Doge of Venice

OOC: A similar letter was sent to the leader of Malta.

A letter to the leader of Milan:
Spoiler :

To the Leader of Milan,

Greetings from the New Republic of Venice! It is wonderful to see that a great city like this has managed to survive through all of the turmoil from the past several hundred years.

It seems evident that the government of this nation would be better suited as a true republic. We would like to invite you to join our new Italian Alliance, which is led by Venice. This would require that you change your government and always be open to take a suggestion from Venice. If you refuse, our army awaits you.

If you accept, you will get many benefits from Venice. You will be allowed to elect your own leaders and write your own constitution, provided that it includes permanent membership in the Italian League and the leader is always willing to take a suggestion from Venice. Your people's daily lives will generally be unchanged.

Please send us your answer. Milan's fate depends on it.

Sincerely,

Teodoro Trevisan I, 1st Doge of New Venice

OOC: A similar letter was sent to Treviso.

Is Egypt a player or an NPC? If it isn't a player, then I am annexing the Suez Canal (I have changed my orders). I will write up a similar letter later regarding that.

Just got back from Hawaii and have had 2 hours of sleep in as many days. However, I dont want to miss this update, so put
-5 into army,
-10 into infrastructure (focus: roads, utilities),
-the rest into expansion to the west and north. I might get the will to overcome my jet lag and put up something more detailed tomorrow. Maybe. We will see.

Thats it for now. Sorry for not being a very big contribution so far, but I will be starting soon. Thanks for putting up with my schedule.

I know I went AWOL on this, just letting you guys know that, though I don't know when I'll have the time, I do plan on updating this point. It might be a while, though - I leave the day after tomorrow, and don't know when things will stop being chaotic.
