Football Thread No. 9

FIFA Fixture tonight! Wooo!

Man U and Arsenal have agreed terms for Van Persie, £24 million apparently. Shows what I know...

Really daft career move by Van Persie; h's gone from being the favourite of a prominent English club to being (most likely) their most hated ex-player. Winning a trophy or two (going to Man U) or being fondly remembered for decades (staying at Arsenal)?

I think that makes us favour for the title.

Well my source was a little too early! I wonder if it was just a fluke I imagine so.
No I think RVP made the right decison. Who cares about the aduleration of the fans? Now he increases his weekly pay massively, gets a massive signing on fee and now will get a cabinet full of trophies! Whilst before he was carrying Arsenal for years and was likely to do so till he got too old and is sent out to Ajax or somewhere.

Maybe. It does depend on RVP hitting it off with Rooney, managing to operate in a two striker system and avoiding injury... the latter being a major issue for him.

Clearly not him!

I knew we'd lost Van Persie when the statement came out last month, but I'm surprised by the destination. He's lost all credibility in this move: he's really shown that he's all about the money. Its a shame because club loyalty was all he really had going for him in terms of personal qualities.

Even without him I think we're in a stronger position than last season. I just hope that £22m eds up being spent on fullbacks and/or a DM.

Its a great signing but I would still say City were favourites as winning the title last season should have a positive effect on their performances this season as they've already won it once already. Depending on how Kagawa works out we might still need another midfielder.

Personally I think it would have been better for Van Persie to stay at Arsenal as football needs plenty of strong ish teams rather than all the best players pooled into a decreasing number of teams.

Ah i didn't know you were a gunner Truronian.
I agree with you on the DM front. I think M'villa would be ideal, believe me I had him on two FM saves and he was awesome :mischief:

Personally, I couldn't blame him for leaving, but going to a major rival is really disappointing. Wouldn't have minded one bit if he went to another league, but no, he had to be a dick and go to Man U.

I don't really understand all the hate versus van Persie. If he had stayed another year, he would have left freely, this way at least Arsenal could get a nice price for him. I also understand that he doesn't want to stay at Arsenal. He has yet to win a big title (the biggest thing he won was the UEFA cup with Feyenoord, a couple of months after his debut) and he isn't going to win one at Arsenal.

I think part of it is, Arsenal showed a lot of faith in RVP when he was consistently injured, and when he finally strings together a full season, he wants out.

It's not the fact that he's moving on but the destination that irksome. If rumours are to be believed he was angling for a ManU move from the get go... I can't think of many clubs that would be happy with their captain forcing through a move to one of their biggest rivals.

When a major club fails to win anything for seven years, some of the blame has to be placed on their first choice striker.

/Shudder Piers Morgan is unhappy about the move. This must be an unmitigated good thing :P

It is understood Van Persie was encouraged by the arrivals of Germany forward Lukas Podolski, France striker Olivier Giroud and Spain midfielder Cazorla - to the point where he was open to the idea of staying with or without a new contract.

But Wenger pulled him aside shortly before Sunday's friendly victory over Cologne, told him he would be sold if a deal could be reached and informed the Dutchman he was no longer part of his plans.

Changes the narrative abit if true.

I don't necessarily think it'll be a bad thing for Arsenal... we tend to score goals with any striker who's not completely naff which is why mediocre players like Chamakh and Bendtner have had decent goal scoring runs when they've been played regularly. I think one of Podolski or Giroud (or both) will fill RVPs shoes perfectly well. I honestly more concerned about losing RVPs assists than his goals at this point.

I don't think ManU and Arsenal are rivals, ManU is playing for the title while Arsenal is playing for Champions League qualification.

I don't see how that is relevant. ManU has a team that can go for the title, Arsenal doesn't. RVP wants to play for a title, so he has got to leave.

Well, Arsenal fans would disagree with you. Hence all the fuss.

It's not really relevant. :)

And anyway, it's football, where no one can be expected to behave reasonably.

And this is the Internet, where no one can be expected to behave reasonably, so… :run:

Germany got raped! Messi missed his first penalty, then scored! Australia was refreshing, though Italy was not.

*cough* Cashley *cough*

A while ago now, and he wasn't our captain. Adebayor and Na$ri are fresher in Arsenal fans' memories and tend to be more reviled, but I'm sure there is room in there for RVP.

Wish I could have seen the Argentina Germany match. Anyone think Argentina are the team to oust Spain from world dominance? If you look at their players they have now, they are certainly a match in certain areas.
