Below is a reference map for those who wish to build Earth Maps with the Civs and City-States in their proper locations. The first image is just Civs. The second one contains both Civs (RED) and City-States (GREEN). They are as approximate as I could have made them. Below is the key to match the plots. For Civs, I have included their capitals (or what I will presume to be their capital).

Civilizations
  1. America – Washington DC
  2. Arabia – Mecca (assumed)
  3. Aztec – Tenochtitlan (assumed)
  4. China – Beijing (assumed)
  5. Egypt – Thebes (assumed)
  6. England – London
  7. France – Paris
  8. Germany – Berlin
  9. Greece – Athens
  10. India – Delhi (assumed)
  11. Iroquois - Onandaga
  12. Japan – Tokyo
  13. Ottoman – Istanbul
  14. Persia - Persepolis
  15. Rome – Rome
  16. Russia – Moscow
  17. Siam – Sukothai (I had formerly listed Bangkok... but it was pointed out to me that it was incorrect. I will try to fix the map when I can, but it may be awhile.)
  18. Songhai - Gao
  19. Babylon – Babylon

City-States
  1. Almaty
  2. Belgrade
  3. Bucharest
  4. Budapest
  5. Brussels
  6. Cape Town
  7. Copenhagen
  8. Dublin
  9. Edinburgh
  10. Florence
  11. Geneva
  12. Genoa
  13. Hanoi
  14. Helsinki
  15. Kuala Lumpur
  16. Lhasa
  17. Monaco
  18. Oslo
  19. Ragusa
  20. Rio de Janeiro
  21. Seoul
  22. Sidon
  23. Singapore
  24. Stockholm
  25. Tyre
  26. Venice
  27. Vienna
  28. Warsaw

When Europeans first arrived in North America, the Iroquois were based in what is now the northeastern United States, primarily in what is referred to today as upstate New York west of the Hudson River and through the Finger Lakes region. Today, the Iroquois live primarily in New York and Canada.

From Wikipedia. I saw you had some question marks there. Thought that might help.

EDIT: Didn't see that you had them on the map. I'm dumb, but I was trying to help. D:

Cool.

Er, what about those two dots in the middle of the Pacific? :p

Uhh.. oh yeah! Just ignore those dots in the Pacific. Those were my base dots that I used to C/P. I forgot to brush them out.

Yeah, Wikipedia is what I used to pin-point the locations. I'm not sure what the capital was so I just put them approximately in New York state (I may be off a little).

I guess that is more like central New York State. But, I would say that my plot is close enough. Thanks, btw! I got it from a program called Fractal Terrains and used Paint and photoshop to mark the plots.

You're welcome! In your list though, Iroquois has question marks after it :)

Where did that list of city-states come from, also why 28 of them?

Ah I see now. I suppose I am hoping that modding city-states is easy, Its really only a name, a logo, and 2 describers (i think). Because as it is, and I thank you and your map makin skeels for pointing this out, I feel there are WAY to many European ones. Here is a lil bit of how I would add or subtract.

-Id get rid of 22,25 and add in Jerusalem, cuz who honestly doesn't want to fight over that.

-Id get rid of: Almaty, Belgrade, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Geneva, Genoa, Helsinki, Lhasa, Oslo, Ragusa,Sidon, Tyre, Venice, Vienna, Warsaw. Seriously most of these places just overcrowd Europe even MORE then the civs do and are not really cool places to deal with.

-Id add:Jerusalem, another Native American tribe or 2 one in the west one in central, for south america maybe Lima on the west, keep rio on the east and put in Buenos Aires at the southern tip. Over to Africa i would keep cape town, add madagascar, put Marrakech up at the north west tips inland of course, something on east africa like Djibouti (gotta love the name), probably toss in a mongolian city or something as well as kazakhstan for shitz and giggles. Definitely would give the Ausies some love and mebe even New zealand.

I just feel like spreading them out over the entire map would add A LOT more then having them bunched up the way they are as of now.

Imagine starting as a Euro civ and having to compete in every way with all the other Euro civs while having to spend money to please countless city-states? Or the opposite, how easy it would be to play iroquois or US on the other side of the world and not have ANY to deal with and you can spend your gold and time how you please? I call that a serious imbalance IF they are all placed as they are now. Having them spread over a nice area where each civ is close to a couple/a few but not overwhelmed will help balance the world map just a bit.

Thats all just my opinion i could be way off.

Yes, for an Earth map it's better to have a different and more evenly distributed set of CSs.

Vienna is nicely central between France, Germany, and Rome. Can't get rid of that!

A little crowded for sure in Europe. All those European Civs will be weak with so amny city states around them. Besides taking out European ones, I hope you can mod some city states in. I'd place them around eastern Russia and northern Asia (Mongolia) just to check the growth of Russia and china.

The world map will have to distort Europe to make it quite a bit larger than it actually is relative to the rest of the world in order to make it playable with all the civs and city-states.

However, having so many nearby city-states won't be a disadvantage in my view--if anything, it will be an advantage! European civs will be getting a lot of boosts from allied city states.

Thanks for putting this together Thorburne. I am chomping at the bit to begin creating scenarios using Civ5 and I prefer to use the real world map as my starting point. This work you created goes a long way to helping establish proper start locations.

True, OR make it small but fill it with riches and resources.

And that is why, having a "real earth map" as apposed to the random placement earth map that Civ5 will come with, is just a really really bad idea.
