But you can only have one of these things done, but not the other. Some of you may even choose none at all. They are:

1) You no longer have to sleep. This gives 8ish more hours to do whatever you want.

2) You no longer have to eat or drink. So presumably you don't have to go to the bathroom either. No more awkward moments, no more farts, no more vomits, and you save a ton of money on your food bill.

The answer is definitely 2 because you can save more money in the long run this way. 3 meals + many drinks + restrooms are far more money costly than just sleeping.

1. sleep is static
2. eat and drink are dynamic (they consume lots of energies and time including driving the cars for the shopping)

saving money is much easier than earning more.

I'd go with 1).

I love eating and drinking and enjoy a good fart... but sleep just takes up too much goddamn time. And most of the time it doesn't even really work right and whenever there's dreams they're weird and you can't figure them out and mornings are just basically a couple hours of pure confusion for me to begin with..

so down with sleep. I mean, I love to sleep, but life without sleep would be a LOT easier.

Would I still be able to nap? Or sleep if I want to? I mean, 8 new hours every day, that's a lot of room for activities. I just got Cities: Skylines, so that's probably what I would do with that time at first, but eventually I might get run out of stuff to do. Why not nap every once in a while? Naps are kind of nice. Would I be allowed to?

My initial instinct would be to take 1. However I've read from people who have tried Polyphasic sleep that the worst part is dealing with the boredom. People don't realize just how much extra time 8 hours a day is. You run out of things to do with it and everybody you know is asleep. Sounds kind of miserable.

For 2: can you still eat and drink if you want to? Can you get drunk?

It does sound kind of miserable, but I think as an introvert, I could handle it very well.. I'd use night time for introvert activities and socialize more during the day. And hopefully take naps. But if not, I'd buy .. I don't know, legos. Take some classes. Read a lot more. Learn how to do something. I like having options, and it seems that getting rid of sleep would open the doors to a lot of new options.

Having said that, I'd probably eventually get bored anyway. I mean, I get bored easily as it is.

You only save more money with 2) if your time is incredibly low value.

1) Valuing your time at $10/hour you save $2400/month.
2) A month's supply of soylent and the hour per day you spent preparing/drinking it costs $555.

So you save more money by not sleeping if your time is worth more than $2.31/hour.

Yeah, I've read about polyphasic sleep too, and I think these people just don't have much going on in their lives. I've got way more stuff I want to get done than I have time for - it's much more balanced when I'm not working a day job, which gives me about the same extra 8 hours per day that not sleeping would give.

Zelig what if you get sick? Continuous working make you extremely stressful. Medicine bills are not fun at all.

Count the shopping time and the car driving gas fuels too.

The good question will be whether you need to eat an extra meal per day during those 8 hours.

What? I'm not saying I'd work all night, I'm explaining how to value time. Obviously marginal values change if you want to be more specific, but it works closely enough.

If I choose to spend the 8 hours playing golf that's because the enjoyment of the golf is worth at least the cost of golf plus $80. (And because it's also worth more than any other activity I could be doing other than golf.)

Count the shopping time and the car driving gas fuels too.

You subscribe to Soylent and then it's automatically delivered to your house monthly, there's no shopping time or fuel required.

Tim's rule: only boring people get bored.

Unfortunately soylent stuffs make me diarrhea, so this doesn't work for me. I cannot stand eating the same things everyday.

Probably just need to stick to it until your body adjusts and/or drink more water and/or tweak the fiber and/or magnesium, diarrhea is not a common effect.

It's my genetic problem, I don't have good health, so I have to pick 2 to save some of my medicine bills.

Well that's hardly applicable to other people, that's like an insomniac choosing to eliminate the need for sleep.

Depends what you're doing. Sleep burns about as many Calories as typical people do when they're sitting working/watching tv/on the internet and awake.

Sleep-free is not equal to stress-free. You still get emotions and burdens from various socials.
I wouldn't be tired all the freakin' time, so I could deal with stress.

Hell it'd be awesome. I could have a job and do grad school and have a relationship all simultaneously. Work, learn, play, all night, all day.

I like eating more. I like food. :smug:

Older and sick people may like #2 better I believe. I'm in this category.

There are still quiet bit of populations relating to the hospitals that's why we have "Obamacare".

The age of Perfection still gets older and so does everyone else.

If there's a life line, I'd choose never to be sick.

Zelig is Canadian
Not all medical care is free here. Prescriptions certainly aren't. And there's talk of our province (Zelig and I live approximately 100 miles from each other, in Alberta) reinstating health care premiums.

To answer the OP: I have numerous food allergies, so while I enjoy some foods, it would be easier all around to give up eating. And I sometimes have very interesting dreams, so I'd miss sleep.

Well I don't think in this hypothetical either choice would make you sick.

For me, I only have so little time in my life and so much I'd like to do, anything that would help increase the amount of useful time to me would be a boon.
