Forestry Mod?

Has anyone created a mod that tracks which tiles have been harvested for the one-time forestry shield bonus? Having an in-game graphics utility to display this would be far more efficient than having to switch between the game and a drawing program every time I want to plant and chop a forest.

Cracker mentioned something like this on his Opening Moves website long ago, so I'm hoping that someone has already addressed this and I just can't find it.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.:D

Well, it's been about a week without a response so I'm going to assume I won't get one. In the meantime, I've found a thread that indicates that no such mod existed as of 2004. Indications are that the piece of code that tracks this part of the game is either impossible to tap into or not worth the effort. I'm also guessing that not enough people actually conduct intensive forestry operations for any of this to matter. My conclusion is that such a mod will probably never exist.

For those poor souls that wander in here looking for answers, I've found a thread that offers an alternative method of tracking forestry without a drawing program(pages 2 and 3):

Forestry Operations in Civ3

This method is easier on memory(which is the primary reason I was seeking a mod in the first place), but unfortunately my style of play involves a lot of abandoning and relocating cities for optimal tile usage and the information would be lost every time I abandoned a city. I guess I'll continue to trudge along praying that the game won't crash when I have the drawing program open.

Happy Civing everyone.

BTW, for anyone it might help, MGI Photosuite is easier to use than MSPaint IMO. It uses less memory and loads and updates faster.:)

edit: Hooray! All hope is not lost. CivAssist II contains a feature known as "Shield Forest" in its World Map page that does exactly what I've been asking for (if you have the memory to handle it). I, however, do not have the memory to handle it and will continue to seek an in game version of this feature.

Thank you for the reply. I was beginning to think no one would.

I don't really know much about modding (I'm a graphics guy)

Here's a question. I don't know anything about programming so I don't know how such a mod would work, but is it possible that it is just a matter of finding the code that tracks the harvested tiles and attaching a graphics display program to it? For instance, placing a small red dot or x in a corner of the tile in the Clean Map screen.

Thanks again.:)

So, are you asking for a utility to show you the shields you get from the forests?

Also, welcome to the forums, I remember reading this thread a while back but it was late at night and I didn't have time to respond, and I forgot about the next day.

Sorry, but I don´t know of such a mod.:dunno:

So, are you asking for a utility to show you the shields you get from the forests?

I don't think I understand your question correctly, but I think the answer is no. I'm not talking about the shields specifically. If you know of a related utility, though, I'd be interested.

What I am looking for is an in-game modification that shows on the map which tiles have already been harvested for the shield bonus so that the player can avoid trying to harvest the bonus a second time.

Note that this is primarily a convenience issue because I am tired of switching between the game and a drawing program to keep track of this. But it would also help the player avoid those tiles that the AI has already harvested in newly conquered territory. This is nearly impossible to track on your own unless you notice that a forest has disappeared. On numerous occasions I have sought to rush production in a corrupt city with an extra 10 or 20 shields of forestry only to find out that, say Russia, had already reaped those forests. I just wasted 38 worker turns per tile for nothing.

I would also like to say again that this is not an original idea of mine, but can properly be attributed to cracker. He was discussing that this was something that Firaxis might do which is why I suspect that a mod may not be possible.:(

If I understand what you're asking then I think that you're probably better off asking in the Civ 3 quick question thread. Civassist is the kind of utility that might help, and you might get an answer if you post your question here.

Keroro, thank you!:goodjob: The "Shield Forest" feature on the World Map page on CivAssist is exactly the type of feature I've been talking about. For those people that have the memory to handle Civassist, this is just about perfect. But alas, my measly 128 Mb, which I have no intention of upgrading, struggles to handle Civassist alone, much less both Civassist and the game in tandem. Perhaps if the World Map function were released as a stand alone program, but this may be too much to ask of the programmer. I will bug ainwood with some other questions, though. What I would really like is to see this feature in the game itself.

Sorry about the delay getting back to you. Was playing around with Civassist. No one will ever question ainwood's dedication to this game.

No problem. I didn't do much in reality, just recommended what someone else does. CivAssist is one of the reasons I've been able to make the step up from Monarch to Emperor recently, it is a really useful utility.
