Fox-04 -- The Prime Directive

@ Sam Yeager ~ love the name! do you read any of Turtledove's other series, e.g., the Great War (191) series?
Not quite got round to that yet. :( Seven rather lengthy novels plus one other took quite a while. ;)

End transmission.

i hear ya ~ i actually just reread the whole WWII series earlier this year. With 8000 other things going on, i could only read during my lunch hour. Needless to say, it sure did take a W H O L E lot of 1 hour sessions to finish all 8 :crazyeye: but worth it!

FWIW, i prefer the great war series, but then again, i'm american and it certainly is much more regional than the other series.

But, I am thinking if religion can spread without open borders? If no, then we would be playing Cuban Isolationist instead of Prime Directive. In that case, I am considering to change the variant a bit, and define the Principle of Non-Interference as "we cannot actively initiate trade with non-Federation members, but can accept trade initiated by them".

Whats does the crew think?
Captain,

In the SGOTM01 incident precisely this type of event occurred. Although it was from our sworn foe who was adjacent to our solar system. Perhaps establishing colonies in the near vicinity of other civilizations would increase the likelihood of such events?

I have no philsophical objections to the proposed charter change outlined above.

Now, I thought with a Holy Shrine the religion -- I mean charter -- would spread more freely to other civilizations regardless of Open Borders. Or am I incorrect in the game mechanic?

One thinks it should but on Monarch seems to take a while. Both Planets have no charter but yet we can't reach them. I was hoping Ruff_hi's empathic abilities will help them see our way. LOL

Actually now that I think about we don't have a shrine yet. I would use a Trekkie term but want to be specific. I think it's the shrine that makes it spread faster. We will have a Great Federation specialist in 9 turns which yield us a Federation Charter center ability. (shrine) Although you might want to use him for the art of the Christian charter.

Are we satisfied with what we have then we should build the Federation Charter Center. Now here's a kicker and happens to me always. I will choose one Charter and then the AI's take on another Charter that I have founded but not the "chosen Charter". One specialist arrives at the capitol and the entire civ will accept the Charter. It doesn't always last but does work.

Hope that makes sense.

EDIT: After some experimentation the shrine will spread the religion quickly. So can stay with original variant.

lurker's comment:
How religion spreads (I think):
If there is a connection between cities, a religion can spread from one to the other. Open Borders does not prevent this, however, I do not know if Open Borders encourages it.
If you have a Shrine, it does encourage the spread of the religion (i.e. greater % chance of spreading). If you have a State Religion, it encourages the internal spread of the religion (so it only helps within your borders--which is why you want to get other Civs to convert to the State Religion).

Captain's Log - Stardate 21075

People at the Daystorm Institute learnt how a new deadly technology. Symbols.

fox04-AD0075-alphabet.jpg

Why deadly? Because immediately, that head of the Axtec came asking for it.

Sorry, pal, I can't do that. My hands are tied. I am not supposed to interfere with your civilization.

Captain's Log - Stardate 21175

I have just been summoned to the Starfleet headquarters. Admiral Dorothy told me that the Vulcan had sent us their High Ambassador (read: GProphet) to serve as a resident Charter Protector for the Federation.

fox04-AD0175-GProphet.jpg

After much discussion about which of the three version of the charters is the best, things were put into vote. The third edition won by a slight margin.

Starleet command had me oversee the construction of the Residence for the High Ambassador.

Captain's Log - Stardate 21200

It's that Aztec Head of State again. He asked for show of friendship from the federation to the Aztec ....

What? Us, weak? Damned, I terminate the communications channel, faking technical problems.

Well, he may come knocking again, I will better fake ill and return to my quarters.

I set us towards Literature for the Library. We would need iron working soon to clear the forest and start erecting some cottages.

I am considering relaxing the variant a bit ... but I will talk abt that tomorrow. Need to sleep now.

Captain,
Star Fleet research wants to know if they should start investigating the feasibility of building a stealth class of ships that could pass through other civilization's space continuims without causing a war?

Hmz, I believe cloaking technology is prohibited by the Kitomer?! accoords

No Kitomer was the Klingons right? What is the treaty the Federation has with the Vulcan evil twins? (chit I forget the name, LONG LIVE GOOGLE... Romulans....)

Ruff hi

You have a good aptitude for the Star Trek details. Also pardon moi for my err on the Empath. Perhaps science officer is a better description since you know all the intricate details of Star Trek.

Provisionally this class of starship will be called C*****L (Fox-04 level 5 authorisation required to decrypt class name).

Picard: Computer, start Capital's Log, Stardate 43526.2, no 6.3 errr 6.4? Computer - what is the stardate?

Computer: 43526.1

Picard: Ah - insert correct stardate. We proceed on our scientific mission studying the nature of heavenly bodies. We are currently …

Computer: Ereeeeeeeeeee … we are pretty, oh so pretty, oh so pretty are we …

Picard: Bridge - report!

Picard: Bridge!

(Picard exits his ready room and enters the Bridge)

Picard: Report!

Worf: Sir, we are experiencing computer related issues.

Picard: Any news from Geordi?

Worf: Communication is currently unreliable.

Picard: No 1 - get down to Engineering and find out what is going on.

Riker: Yes Sir … (mumbles under his breath) … I must remember to talk to the captain, I am getting sick of being called No 1 … after all, that is reserved for kids when they go to the toilet … some kids laughted at me the other day when the Captain called me No 1 … I'm sure he knows exactly what is going on with "No 1" and does it deliberatly … at lease I am not No 2!

(Riker exits bridge)

Picard: counselor - are you feeling ok?

Troi: I sense a great presence is awakening.

(more singing can be heard coming up the turbo lift shaft and then on the main screen …)

Picard: What is that gibberish?

Data: (Head to one side) Gibberish. Defined: Unintelligent talking. Etymology - a word in common usage during the late 1900s meaning talk that sounds real but has no actual meaning. Captain - you have used a word that refers to talking while the screen is showning written material …

Picard: Data!

Data: (head snaps straight) Yes Captain. (Data looks down at his concole and starts hitting keys) Captain, it appears to be a message from … from the main computer, Sir.

(Beveley Crusher enters the Bridge - wolf whistles can be heard in the background)

Crusher: Captain, the communication system is out and … oh, you are getting the same messages here.

Picard: Yes Doctor.

Troi: Ohhhhhhhhhhh

Crusher: Is she ok?

Picard: Just having a personal moment.

Crusher: Ahhhhhh, ok. I have to report that we are missing some medical nanites. Also, I saw Wesley with a worried look on this face as he was running around the arbaretum with a nanite container.

Picard: WESLEY!

Crusher: Jean-Luc, careful or no more MILF for you.

Picard: Hmmmf, yes, quite!

(Riker, Geordi and Wesley enter the bridge)

Riker: Captain, it seems that young Wesley's science experiment has escaped.

(Picard looks at Wesley, then looks meaningfully at the Main Screen)

Geordi: Captain … I've analysed the main screen and the computer appears to be playing a game from our entertainment section … Civilization MXXIV.

Data: Civilization! A single or multiple player game invented in the late 1900s with the development of the personal computer. Players managed a civilization from 4000BC to 2050AD. How can one person live for 6000 years?

Hilarious, actually based on the first episode of Season 3.

:goodjob:

Now, abt the relaxation of variant:

(1) Adoptation of any version of the Federation charter would be considered a show of faith to join the Federation, thus allowing us to trade with them if they initiate the trade (but they are still not considered Federation member)

(2) In line with the several breaches of Prime Directive in each series of Star Trek, each crew (i.e player) is allowed one breach, to be taken as and when he (or she?) sees fit ;)

How abt that?

Hailing Captain Greyfox...

Sir just an observation but it won't be long before Peter adapts one of our charters. That's good news sir and thank you for opening a door to one breach. Will make good use of that someday.
