Free Religion - Quick Question

I've been having a good search through, but don't seem to be able to find the answer...but apologies if it is here somewhere...

I currently have the Christain religion, with the Holy Building built in my Holy City, and have spent a considerable amount of resource sending my missionaries off to spread the word, so to speak...and rake in the cash from the spread of the religion...

If I switch to Free Religion, do I lose the bonus associated with this...as basically I won't have a set state religion anymore...

You will still get the gold income from the shrine.

Got you...so even if I changed to another religion, say Islam, becauise I owned the Christian Shrine (Church of the Nativity) I'd still get the cash income from all the Christain cities...

The only things you would lose from changing to FR are bonuses from wonders that require you to have a state religion, like wealth from Spiral Minaret, culture from Sistine Chapel etc.

EDIT: good point about the espionage. I always forget about that.

You also lose an espionage bonus for having the same religion as target I think.

Yeah, all bonuses attained from having a religion as your state religion are lost, like the +1 but bonuses attained from having the religion present in the city, like culture and shrine gold, remain.

The +1 happy and culture benefit remains and is increased by +1 happy and +1 culture for all other religions in your cities as well if you move to free religion.
