This is a topic that came up in my literature class and is very interesting. Which would you rather have, freedom (like being able to walk up to gate in an airport), or security ( like everyone being searched and needing a ticket to get to the gate)?

freedom!!!!

On the one hand, I agree with Narz, because freedom becomes less important and perhaps, even, less appreciable, when one lives in fear. However, I would also hate to live in a society in which I felt safe and secure in my own home but did not have personal freedoms.

I voted 50-50, because I think it may still be possible for humankind to develop a balance between the two. In America, the time is becoming increasingly imminent when we will have neither.

Freedom. Short+Happy life is better than Long+Unhappy!

Also what if there wasn't the freedom to Civ.....

Not a pretty picture

I voted 50-50 it isn't much fun to be free and living in fear. People need to have certain freedoms in order to maintain a democracy, but so is security. I would prefer 70-30 Freedom-Security

I went with freedom. Because the moment you exercise freedom in a police state, you no longer have security anyway.

Freedom. Sercurity often comes at a very low price of freedom, any more then that and you need to tell the government to back off

Some of both.

Choosing between the extremes, I would always choose security, becouse if you are have no security, you are dead. If your not dead, then the situation must not realy be that dangerous, and therefor you are secure.

To quote ben franklin:

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both. "

50-50. Freedom from all laws is no better than no freedom because of laws.

I think this question asks in terms of society, not individuals. So a society with little security wouldn't result in automatic death, rather, the need to carry around automatic weapons and grenades 24/7 :)

But then the people with the big guns would be secure.
