I have searched the web and this forum, and tried the following:
* deleted all video & audio files in the programs/steam/etc. directories, including the expansion subdirectory
* "verified" and reinstalled files via Steam library
* tried loading with a saved game. tried DX 9 and 11. Tried skipping intro movie by entering "1" in the setings text file
* updated my NVDIA video driver for my HP pavilion dv 7 (manufactured 2009)
The game worked well, then stopped, then I tried the above once before, and it worked again, and now it has stopped loading again.
If you have a solution, please be detailed. I am not overly familiar with the technical terminology.
** RESOLVED **
I went to the Steam forums, where they suggested the above, plus a system reboot and running the directX setup program found in the Steam/DirectX subdirectory. This worked.
