Not sure if this has been said before but...

Guys, have the French got a new UI?? The Chateau??

It seems Lyon is surrounded by them and even has a worker building one!

Remember the poster Dennis showed us? Wasn't there a chateau in the background there??

Maybe France have a chateau which generates culture for them (seeing as their UA has been changed to tourism generation). And then they may have lost one of their UU (probably the Foreign Legion if you ask me - especially since the Brazilians have an expeditionary force as a UU now..

With everything I'm hearing, it seems like I'm playing France when this releases. I always played them in Civ 1, and have tried them a few times with Civ 5 too but never fell for them.

It would be kinda cool if you could choose if you want the French UI or the UU that is being replaced but not both so you won't lose the ability to use the UU for france and you could either one whenever you want.

is it just me or does the archeologist looks like indiana jones!? XD

What other archeologist can you use as a generic template for, well, archeologists?

(On the topic of that, the Great Engineer of the industrial era and beyond is also a Indiana Clone, will they get a redesign?)

France is getting more and more interesting. I never played them in Civ5, and now I have the feeling they might become one of my favorite civs.

Doesn't the French Foreign Legion replace Great War Infantry now? If you're going to argue that another Civ has a UU in the same slot, Musketeer has far more problems with Janissaries and Minutemen (and really should have Caroleans there).

And, historically, Napoleon had disbanded the Musketeers, so it would make more sence of a replacement Unique, in this case the Chateau, replacing the Musketeers instead of the French Foreign Legion. But when did they ever just replaced a Unique unit/building/improvement, it doesn't make sence from any stand point to replace any uniques when A, it was in the game long enought, and B, not being that much of a problem.

They probably wanted France to play more unique and they thought an improvement would do that. Also, with the change in culture victory, they felt France's UA needed an overhaul, which necessitated other changes for balances.

Of course it's unprecedented, but it's not crazy. They won't remove the game file, so you can always use it in a mod. They felt France would play more interestingly with a UI. It's a shame because both UUs are well-liked (well, Musketeers at least look cool, I can't say I found them all that interesting to play with), but I'm looking forward to the brand new France.

What about three abilities for underpowered civs?

There's very little consensus on what an underpowered civ is. People think an ability or a unit is underpowered, but they acknowledge they like other things about them. Giving them three (technically four) things is already taking the "whole civ" approach, which has led to pretty good balance so far.

Maybe the Foreign Legion was one of Shafur's ideas and they feel the need to purge as many of those things as possible.

Underpowered? That's not the consensus on France that I'm familiar with.

Both UU's are good and very appropos, but the musketeer is just a musketman with higher strength. It can go.

I would've loved it much better if it got a combat bonus when two other musketeers were nearby. :)

I see nothing indicating that they want to purge Shafer's ideas. If anything, Ed Beech has been more defensive of his ideas that Jon Shafer has.

I also see nothing indicating that the French Foreign Legion was Shafer's idea unless you mean that having two UUs was his idea. After all, it's a good choice.
