Frequently Asked Questions - (FAQ)

Thanks for your answer daviddesj.....i guess it does belong in the general forum and I will do so from now on....I always think production=shields, but I guess that's a bad assumption w/ the algorithm. Thanks again

If you're planning on the extra two sheild to have your city grow and build the settler at the same turn, AND you've been micromanaging your food in exchange for sheilds try to do the mm-shields with 2 turns to go in growth (which will look like 3 turns to go in growth) and then mm-food to change the 2 turns to 1 turn for growth. This ensures you are +3 food on the growth turn and forces the governer to pick the highest shield tile.

I just posted a long report in the GOTM20 Spoiler 2 thread, complete with a map attachment. It formatted just widely enough on the screen that one needs to scroll to read across, which is not good. Is the map too big? If so, could I switch it for a smaller one? Are there established parameters for attachment sizes? Or is there anything I can do to squeeze the width of the message?

I have been trying to play GOTM19 and was able to play the test the graphics piece but am continually told that " The requested URL /games/saves/gotm19_start_ptwv1_14.sa was not found on this server." I would like to give the new GOTM system a go without reading the spoilers to download someone else's game.Could someone help?

Chasbolt,

Contact me by email at gotm@civfantics.net and I will email a copy of the save file directly to you.

Just make sure you clearly identify yourself and the software version of the Civ3 or PTW software that you expect to play the game in.

Does the Conquistador have the ability to retrieve from battle? Thanks in advance for the answer.:)

All multiple-move units have the retreat ability. The conquistador has two movement points.

Alexman & Rabies,

Thanks for the fast answer!:)

A request to whomever's in charge of the GOTM website: could we please get a QSC page put up and linked to from the left-side index thingie? (Yeah, I'm really technical  ) It seems like every month when I want to submit my QSC I have to search high and low for the submission address. I noticed that on the main 'first time to this website' page at the bottom there's a bit of text that makes it sound like there is a QSC page somewhere, but there's no link.

for first timer what should i play conquest, open or pretador...if so can u tell me what file i need for that too.

will this install make my ptw game play differently when i play a normal game again or play online?

thanks so much

You should go to this address and read the information there - that should answer most of your questions. Any further ones you have, or any problems you run into, you can email or PM Cracker, the moderator for this forum.

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/gotm20_spain.shtml

Since you're a first-timer, you could play whichever version you like; I'd say if you're comfortable at monarch-emperor at least to give yourself the challenge of the Open level as opposed to Conquest, but you're free to decide differently. In this case, the Predator change is mainly in the barbarians (raging) and the mandatory conquest victory condition.

The downloads won't affect your regular games.

Have fun and good luck!

Renata, I also have trouble navigating around the GOTM site. Things that look like they should be links aren't, and the whole site is way off to the right in my browsers. But the email address for QSC submission is on the game instructions pages. For example GOTM 20 for version 1.29 has it near the bottom of the page at http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/gotm20_start_v1_29.shtml

And another thing! The QSC submission instructions there are not nearly as specific about file naming as the ones I've seen posted around the forums. I used the GOTM site instructions for my gotm20 file and just made a file name up as best I could, so I have no idea whether my QSC file will be found or valid.

Minor temper tantrum over

That's quite true for this specific player because (s)he is using PTW and it can select different file sets for different games automatically. But for the avoidance of confusion, vanilla civ3 players have to swap resources files in and out manually in order to switch between gotm and regular games.

I'll second that. I've had the exact same problem for the past couple months...so you guys would at least be doing 2 people a big favor! :)

Right, and I think that's one of the places I've finally found the address in the past. (This time I found a link from the FAQ page.) But it's far from obvious where to look at the outset, and at least some of the likely possibilities are dead ends.

At any rate, I'm sure the staff are aware it needs work, just wanted it bumped up a notch or two in priorities if possible. :)

I have a question about drafting. Citizens can be drafted in any native city with a pop over size 6. I have been mostly unable to draft from captured cities of that size. At first I assumed that it was because I was still at war with that civ. However, even after the civ was eliminated, I still couldn't draft in one city - but I could in another. Are there any obscure rules here which i should be aware of?

Txurce,

You can't rush or draft from a city that's in resistance ( or disorder). Even after the civ is gone the residents might still be resisting (happened to me in GOTM19)

GOTM Staff,
Past couple of months, you guys were quite open about which civ we would be playing next (e.g. We knew 20 would be spain all the way back in 17 or 18). Unless I missed it, I don't think any hints have been dropped about 21 or beyond. Just curious if this info could/would be shared.

Mostly because I am just nosey.. :p

Curiousity is a healthy emotion. ;)

All previous months, the GOTM games have had a scheduled pre-announced civilization to play with. Gotm22 in August will be played with the Vikings\Norse\Scandinavians. Gotm23 in September will be played with the Arabs.

Gotm21 is will be the first game of its kind ever played in the GOTM's where we have a Civ chosen the fit the game instead of having the game generated to fit the Civ.

The game concept for Gotm21 in July is a "Mediteranean Melee" type game. We have anotehr similar type game planned for later in the year with the "Asian Melee" game.

It is not that we are not being open about the civ in the Gotm21 as much as that the game cincept is the focus and the Civ in teh game becomes a tool.

We will probably begin the ramp up discussion process for Gotm21 in about a week after we get a bit further into some planned activities including "Freaky Free Fire Friday" that will begin in about 9 hours.
