Frequently Asked Questions - (FAQ)

That didn't work. Now it asks me to insert the CD when the CD is already in the drive.

At least we are making some progress, thanks for all the help

Which patch did you try? What language version do you have?

I used the link diathus gave me above. I used the english patch:

Civilization III Patch v1.29f (9.9 MB): Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3

I think I used mirror 2

My Civ CD is ver 1.07 I think. It normally does not require me to have the CD in the drive to play it.

It sounds as if 1.29f doesn't acknowledge your 1.07 CD as a proof of purchase, which seems strange, but I don't know the ancient history of Civ3 Cds, 'specially not Windows ones. Any idea who the publisher was for your CD?

I believe a number of the patches updated the CD checking to be more rigourous. I guess the CD is a bit dodgy in some way. Might be worth contacting the publisher about it.

Yes, I think more rigourous CD checking is the problem. Unpatched the game does not check the CD, after patching it does. I'd hate to think I have a dodgy CD. I bought it ful price at a retail store in my town. It was a legit store and the box etc looked legit.

Infogrames and firaxis are the publishers that pop up on the intro splash.

I seem to remember something about applying the patches to a Civ3 version that came already patched made it unable to find the disk when the game began. Here's my suggestion: Remove the current Civ3 Installations. Then re-install. Once that's complete. Start up PTW and check the lower of the menu screen for the revision number. Best of luck

@denyd: That is certainly true for PtW, which comes from two different sources - Infogrames and Atari. The Atari one comes with C3C, and is the latest version, so you don't need to patch it and if you apply the Infogrames patch it doesn't recognise the Atari disk

However, this is not PtW as far as I can tell, it's an old vanilla, so it should not have the above problem.

Yes its Vanilla, but its not old. I just bought it in the last few months

It may be new to you, but 1.07 is from the dark ages. My Mac version was version 1.14, bought three years ago.

I guesss that's what I get for buying my software where I buy my groceries. ;)

I bought Complete - with all three, Vanilla, PTW, Conquests.

Can I submit GOTM? It says not to play GOTM in conquests, though when I tried playing 41 (the spanish one), it seemed to be set up as PTW (no seafaring, etc.)

You need Conquests to play Cotms and PTW or (modded) vanilla to play Gotms. Make sure you are using the latest patch in any case.

Regarding submissions, every game has a deadline - this can be found on the Main Gotm page.

Play COTMs in Conquests. No mods.

Play GOTMs in PtW - use the Civilization 3X executable. No mods.

Don't play GOTMs in Conquests. It'll all end in tears, as we reject your submission if it's played in Conquests.

Don't play GOTMs in Vanilla as you need to download a big mod with no obvious benefit.

I guess I wasn't clear.

I have Civilization Complete - includes Vanilla, PTW, Conquests.

But there is no option that I can see as to what version of Civ to play things in - only one .exe to run (that I can see), and nothing saying "use PTW" or "use conquests" inside it.

Am I just out of luck on the GOTM? The ruleset for the spanish GOTM seemed to be PTW - spanish were religious, and there was no seafaring - so it seemed to play correctly. I guess I am not sure if I am missing something obvious. It's a fun challenge anyway...

If you have PtW then there is a PtW executable. It is separate from the Conquests executable. Trust me, it's in there somewhere.

If you have started playing a GOTM in Conquests then you have disqualified yoursef from submitting a vaild entry as you cannot go back and replay in PtW because you know the map, and you cannot submit the game you ae playing because it's being played to different rules from the rest of the entrants.

Whether or not the Spanish are seafaring is built into the starting save, but lots of other rules are hard coded into the executable you play it with, including a corruption model, different leader and army behaviours etc. That is why we *have* to run two separate competitions. If it wasn't so we'd run a single competition.

ATM I am waiying for atari to respond to my problem, but it's been a couple weeks, and Im thinking it might be easier to just go ahead and buy a newer version. Which brings up the following question:

Would it be worth it to get civ III complete or jump straight to civ 4?

Im playing at monarch level, where I find a win inevitable. I have been looking forward to GOTM to give me new challenges and keep it fresh.

It sounds like it's your CD that's faulty. A copy of Complete would probably be under $25 today, so that may be your best bet.

Whether you go straight for Civ4 depends on several factors. Civ3 is a lot cheaper now, and a lot less demanding on your PC hardware. If your PC is less than brand new you could also be in for some upgrade costs to run Civ4. Only you can judge whether you can still enjoy Civ3, but GOTMs will still be here whether you choose Civ3 or Civ4.

howdy. i am new to GOTM and am warming up on some older games. i am playing 20 the conquest edition right now. i was surprised to see treasure chests moving about the map. can anyone tell me how to use my treasure chests? in addition, the worker told me he connect to horses, terrain info tells me there are horses but I can not see them. can anyone help? thanks in advance. i am a mac user playing 1.29beta2 gotm mod.
