Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Not necessarily. It depends on the circumstances. Bumping an old thread is not against the rules and it is not, in itself, spam - e.g. a new user might comment on an uploaded unit without realising that it's from ten years ago. It wouldn't be fair to infract someone for that. But of course bumping an old thread could be done in a way which is spam or perhaps worse.

From the forum rules:
Do not post that you have reported someone else, as that is likely to inflame the situation rather than calm it, and is therefore considered trolling.
Telling people to "stop trolling" or "stop flaming" or "warning" is unlikely to stop them, and may make the situation worse. As such, this may be considered trolling. This also applies to telling people that you have reported their posts.
The key question is, 'are you making the situation worse?' If you accuse someone of trolling, then you are making the situation worse, i.e. provoking a negative reaction, which is what trolling is:
Trolling is posting something with the intent to annoy or to generate a negative reaction from other people. It can be interpreted as anything for which it is reasonably foreseeable (in the moderators' opinion) that someone will react to it.
If you call someone out on accusing someone of trolling, then are you making the situation better or worse? Most likely worse, especially if you are making a direct accusation of trolling.

This discussion may interest people.

Theoretically you can do that, if both persons know how to handle it and don't get upset. And even if that would be the normal situation, a change in somebodies mood could change the reaction too.

...and additionally, you're not really asking for more inconsistence in the moderation, do you :p?

This also depends upon whether someone else gets in the middle of it as well. You are posting in a public place where other people may not get your light-hearted humor. There are many different cultures represented here. English idioms are not always understood by non-native speakers with predicable results.

Note:
'Banter' between 'friends' is treated no differently from any other forum posts. For example, if you flame a 'friend' and think that because you don't really 'mean it' then it is OK, it will still be considered as flaming and dealt with accordingly. Moderators to not have the time, nor inclination, to check with each person whether they are offended by the flaming, and it would also result in the appearance that the rules are not applied consistently.
This means that it's trolling regardless, though seeing as the idea behind it is that we don't necessarily know if something is banter or not, if we are aware that it's just banter, we could potentially let it slide.

But then the question is, what does it look like to a lurker, or someone who isn't aware that the post is just banter? It would look inconsistent, and like favouritism. So that's a consideration that we'd have to make too.

Note that it's possible that what one participant thinks is friendly banter isn't to the other, so we'd have to throw caution to the wind and go with the rule in cases where we're not absolutely sure.

And also note that you're not talking about the usual circumstances in which this rule violation takes place (e.g. someone posts some not-so-great civ advice, and someone else accuses them of trolling, when really they were just trying to be helpful), but a possible exception to the rule.

And a final thing to note; some posters have been given specific instruction that they will not get the benefit of the doubt in interpretation, due to their history, so they should be amply aware that pushing the boundaries is a bad idea.

What if someone was banned for trolling someone really bad but then they turned out be an alt account of the person being trolled?

What about if there is a case where somebody tries to compliment someone else but ends up insulting them instead? I've seen that happen before on one international forum but I don't remember the details :cringe: If I recall the phrase they used was a compliment in their language but it translated badly.

Well I have seen that happen before but I don't remember the exact details. It was kind of funny though. It seemed relevant with the talk before it.

Is it normal during the forum's scheduled backups that the modiki goes offline?
