Well it only gets slow when there are a lot of people in the OT and it only applys to civfanatics.

How does thread merging work. Are threads deleted, In what order are they put, what are the general guidlines regarding this.

When two threads are merged, the posts are put in order of post time. Besides that, I can't tell you much else.

That's pretty much it. The threads are combined into one, with the posts sorted by original post date/time stamp.
