my way of constructing a duel install is basically identical to chasbolt's. However, I don't worry about the D drive - I just keep them both on the C drive.
It is better to take a fully copy of your 'C:\\Program Files\Firaxis\Sid Meier's Civilization 4' directory as the patch process will change your vanilla and warlords DLLs - you will need to change them back if you are playing PBEM games using those games.

I have had some problems with chas' method of playing different versions of the game so I am manually renaming the 'Beyond the Sword' directory (see pic above) to the version I want (in the above pic, v317 is active while v319 is waiting in the wings).
