Funday Monday Game #1: I play, You play, We all play a Lets play!

Holy #*(&! That's a job well done in capturing Assur, Moriarte! I never would've thought to do that...but now Austria's got more wonders and other loot!

Cheers. If my successor decides to go peaceful from now on, it's an option - the war only caused a minor diplo hit with Arabia, if i recall correctly. Assyria has to be "reduced" to OCC either way, in my opinion. :)

Forgot to mention the presence of the barb encampent south of Vienna. Luckily we have a homeland defender.

Very Impressive I was going to attack after research agreement then Rome then leave America & Russia as awesome friends, & Cathage as my Bank & conquer the new World...but you did a fantastic job :)

Very nice! I will try my best to keep up the military pressure that you started, since I want to learn how to play with a strong militaristic empire anyway. I'm not sure when I'm going to play it though. Might be later today, might be next week.

Individual History
The last time we've seen Redwings1340, he was being accused of horrible mismanagement by the citizens of Vienna. He lost a scouting party led by Bob the Lazy I, and led a city with a minimal growth and production. He was exiled from Austria, but never lost love for the country, and still followed the journey through time, even when he was away. Where was he, though, and how did he return to become the Prince of Austria?

Upon leaving, the great Redwings1340 went off to study the ways of war and combat, for all its honor, glory, truth, and ideals. He left the world and went to lead the great city of Tenochtitlan, and discovered that Jaguars are awesome. Then, a new green and red colored portal took him to a strange land he has studied for a long time previously. This new land was a wonderful land full of mysterious beasts and great combat, and soon (30 hours of gameplay, with no exp share, no super training, no pokemon amie, no legendaries, and set mode), he was the Kalos region pokemon champion!

Upon defeating Team Flare and saving the entire pokemon world from a doomsday device, Redwings1340 saw the fun and honor in combat, and was ready to fight. Still, he needed to learn military strategy, and returned a changed man to Austria during the reign of King Moriarte. He rose through the ranks of royalty quickly, and soon became the prince of the kingdom. When King Moriarte took his leave, he was ready to take the crown and lead Austria to more glory through war!

Continuing the Wars!!!
Moriarte had started a massive campaign against Assur and had left guidance to continue the takeover of Assyria, but the new leader looked at the map and saw a different target. He quickly took the city of Kar-Tukilti-Ninurta from Assyria, but didn't trust his army to take the other big Assyrian city without naval support. He decided to puppet this Assyrian city for the Marble nearby, and then made peace with Assyria for salt in 1515. This was a very light peace treaty, but Redwings1340 had his eyes set on bigger sights.

After moving his fleet and army in to position, Redwings1340 motioned his army to attack Rome, and declared war on Rome in 1525. His army of Frigates made short work of much of the Roman army, while the land army moved slowly across the land, marching towards Antium, but while facing constant attacks from Lancers along the way. While the land army was bogged down, the Austrian fleet scored huge victories, and in 1540, Rome was feeling so threatened they decided to sue for peace with the American forces also attacking them. Unfortunately, the Roman negotiator was a good one in these peace negotiations, and played a hand stronger than they actually had. America gave away the city of Boston in exchange for peace, leaving Austria to fight alone.

Spoiler :

Other Diplomacy
In 1530, our Oracle prophesized that Moriarte's caravel and scout have met the last major civilization in the world, and recommended that it was time to form the world congress! Redwings1340 took this prophecy with happiness, and Vienna became host of the first session of the first international governing organization in world history. The great delegates of Austria proposed an embargo of Rome as their first major act in the international world. We gave a speech consisting of, "Romans suck. We should make them miserable." The court of Austria has done no further diplomatic push to get this proposal through, and is hoping it passes on its own merit.

Meanwhile, in the last papers published by Moriarte, he warned of a barbarian camp to the south of Vienna, but Redwings1340 forgot about it until a barbarian musketman invaded in 1540. He managed to pillage a gem mine before he died, which was a minor annoyance. With the wars against Rome taking up the majority of our troops, Austria has not dealt with this encampment other than stationing a defensive trebuchet on the hills to the south of Vienna. The encampment has not struck again, but there is potential for this, and we may want to take that out.

In 1540, Matthew Perry got promoted to the new rank of Great Admiral, and has improved the efficiency of our fleet by around 15%. Meanwhile, in 1565, the Great Vienna Sir Francis Bacon Academy opened, which has made great contributions to science.

A Good War
Through the might of our frigates and our navy, Austria was able to liberate the city of Boston in 1570! The Americans were greatful, and the rest of the world gained assurance that Austria only intends to be the world police, and does not with to attack anyone that does not cross them first. Liberating the city of Boston allowed a nice diplomatic boost to the warmongering, and provided a clear shot to the city of Antium. While the Musketeers from the land army were effectively stalled in Roman lands, a privateer was able to take the city of Antium in 1590. Now that Austria was the undisputed master of the bay, Redwings1340 found no more reason to continue hostilities, and made peace with Rome for 26 gold per turn and citrus.

Spoiler :

What's next?
After the war with Rome, Redwings1340 was satisfied with his accomplishments, and asked the great spirits to guide him to a land that may not even exist at all. He found it through another portal of fate, and discovered the Great Majah of Raspur. He asked this great person to lead Austria to greatness, and to forge a strong empire out of the battles of his predecessors. He warned that a great upheaval in world diplomacy was coming, and that Austria needs to be ready to adopt an ideology and encounter the hazards of the modern world.

Other Notable Events
Education and Industrialization were researched during the second reign of Redwings1340. I bought one public school in Vienna, and built or am building them in other cities. We have a lot of coal, so I think I have two factories building right now, and would recommend building another one soon. We are going to get an ideology pretty soon, probably in the CPM's reign, so choose carefully what you want. I could honestly see an argument for all three ideologies right now. We're in that middle stage with a little bit of everything, exactly the way I wanted it when I started this game. :)

I made a DoF with the Iroquois, but declined one with Ethiopia. I don't know if there's any hostility between the two nations, but without knowing, I only wanted to invite one new world civ in to our friendship club with Russia, Carthage, and America.

In 1635, I relocated the world congress to America. Carthage has the most city state allies though. Between liberating Boston and relocating the world congress, I’ve set up America to be our friend for quite a while after ideologies come in to play.

Our continent (6 civs) has one religious city in America, and no native religions. The other continent has 5 religions in 6 civilizations. It's really a shame we didn't get a religion. We could have dominated half the world with it!

I want to point out that the City of Rome has the Leaning Tower of Pisa (great with our coffee houses) and the Colossus, among other wonders. Just putting that out there... Also, I've been shifting some trade routes to internal ones going to Salzburg. The city is growing really quickly now. Be careful about working tiles. I've tried my best to keep up Moriarte's production focus lock tiles method, but sometimes I slip and forget to update what I'm working. Double check the tiles each city is working.

My pokemon team consisted of: Delphox, Azumarill, Pangoro, Salamance, Tyrantrum, and Mega Abomasnow.

I vote freedom and go INTO SPAAAAAAAAAACE!

I prefer freedom as well, but I'm probably not going to be the one choosing. :)

Btw, happy new year, everyone!

Time for the Majah to return, eh? Will try to get my turns played today or tomorrow.
As for Ideologies, I usually take either Order or Freedom. Under these circumstances I'd say we ought to take Freedom and aim for a Diplomatic Victory (with Science as a fallback.) If we really want to go Domination I'll take Order with the goal of the free courthouses from Iron Curtain, but I think that might be a slightly weaker plan. Autocracy's probably not worth it (we're not really far enough behind the other Civs to warrant it) but I suppose Gunboat Diplomacy might come in useful.

EDIT: Oh, and Happy New Year to everyone here, too!

The Majah's Return

Upon meeting Redwings and returning through the portal, the Majah was somewhat confused. He thought Austria looked like this:

Spoiler :

But was pleasantly surprised to find it was substantially larger, and not just a country that had been beaten up by its neighbors and lost the Holy Roman Emperorship to Brandenburg.
The general populace was rather apathetic about their new leader, however; upon his entry to Vienna, several people were overheard to say, "Look, it's that weird Majah fellow from centuries ago! Great, he's back."

Diplomacy

The world stage had become much more complicated in the intervening centuries. With many new Civilizations and City-States having been met and a World Congress being founded, diplomacy became the primary concern.
The major focus was on maintaining good relations between Austria and its historical friends of America, Russia, The Iroquois, and Carthage, but a shared disgust with the nations of Rome and Assyria not only strengthened these ties but also improved relations with the nations of Sweden and Ethiopia. A Declaration of Friendship was signed with India, and another between Sweden and Austria. Between the new craze of "Coffee Houses" in many Austrian cities and a goodwill shipment of DIY Furniture from IKEA a marked increase in the birth of Great People was noted. The Majah was somewhat confused as to why this was the case, but even he had to admit that putting together furniture from vague, confusing instructions while drinking coffee was making him feel like less of an idiot than normal.
Meanwhile, through careful use of quest fulfillment, bribes loans to their governments, and election fraud undercover activity, several new City-States pledged alliances with Austria. The bonuses reaped from the minor nations of Vilnius, Bratislava, and Zurich should improve Austria for years to come.

...And When That Fails...

Though the Majah's reign was fairly peaceful, the rest of the world engaged in a number of wars. A slugfest between Ethiopia and Portugal only ended near the end of the Majah's reign when both sides, exhausted, signed a white peace. Rome remained at the center of a series of wars involving Carthage, America, and Russia, though neither side seemed to make major progress. Assyria, too, was the target of multiple wars, and here the Majah did lead Austria to war upon the request of America. However, little was gained except the razing of a minor Assyrian city that we can't remember the name of.

Science and Technology

Austria fully entered the Modern Era under the Majah's reign. The opening of Oxford University in Vatican City sparked such a craze of technological discovery that the concept of "Radio" was developed in an extremely short time. Meanwhile, advances in Rifling, Military Science, Steam Power, Biology, Flight, and several other technologies led to major discoveries useful for both peace and war. In addition, multiple Great Scientists were born during the Majah's tenure.

Culture

As Redwings had predicted, with its entrance into the Modern Era the people of Austria began clamoring for the adoption of an ideology. After consultation with his advisers, the Majah agreed to preserve personal liberty by adopting Freedom. Capitalism seemed to sit well with the people of Austria, leading to a marked increase in happiness, while a New Deal sparked scientific progress at the Academies surrounding Vienna. Creative Expression increased the culture the citizens produced, and the Great Works of Art, Writing, and Music that appeared during this time went hand-in-hand with the new World Wonders of Broadway and the Eiffel Tower that were constructed during this time.
The nations of America and Portugal also adopted ideologies during this time period; America adopting Order to increase its production and Portugal becoming an Autocracy. Though relations remained good between Austria and America, the rampant militarism of Portugal slightly unnerved the Majah.
Meanwhile, the religion "Islam", founded by the nation of Arabia (whose leader looked oddly similar to the Majah), began to spread through Austria. One of its central tenets, that of Desert Folklore, became especially popular in the cities of Kuala Lumpur and Vienna.

The Departure of the Majah II: The Search for More Money

Spoiler :

One day the Majah didn't turn up for a scheduled speech. Upon arriving in his rooms, the Majah's advisers discovered he had disappeared. Experiencing a strange sense of deja vu, they found a note saying he had walked down to the shops for a sandwich and would be back in a few hundred years, or until he could think of a good title for the next part of his adventures.
In the meantime, rulership of the nation was passed back to the Majah's ex-adviser Heerlo, who had conveniently come back to Austria after a long time in America.

Other Stuff

Not the most exciting turnset; most of it entailed handling diplomacy (buying and selling Luxs, renewing DoFs, etc.). The war with Assyria was rather pointless, but I figured I'd get the extra positive diplo modifier with America (probably a good thing, as it turned out.) I trained a couple extra military units in Vienna just so we had some over there, continued exploring, built a couple Wonders and some other buildings, created a bunch of Great Works, and so on. I did end up taking Philanthropy prior to us adopting an ideology, so that should prove to be useful in regards to bribing CSes.
I strongly advise we nab Replaceable Parts and then the Statue of Liberty if at all possible; that would give us an outstanding production boost what with all our specialists. The next social policy should probably be Treaty Organization, so we can start getting an increase in influence with some of the City States (I actually rerouted a couple trade routes to City States in preparation for this; also, Vienna is now sending Salzburg Production while receiving Food through internal trade routes.)
Only other thing to mention is that, somewhere along the line, somebody played about 8 turns fewer than they should have. Not entirely sure how that happened; I played to turn 280 so we're back on track for 35 turn sets.

Very nice. That's a nice improvement to the economy under your reign! I was more focused on factories and science, and couldn't spend too much time on the economy.

Did you manage to finish the Porcelain Tower? I started it in Vienna, but somehow forgot to mention that on my write up. If you did, everyone else should keep that in mind when they sign RAs. I think our money is best used for RAs and city states right now, with our policies and wonders, although if anyone wants to go on a short conquering spree, Rome is still right there. 6 free foreign legions could probably give us the boost we need to take Rome.

Yeah, I did get the Porcelain Tower built (completely forgot to mention it myself!) I did try to sign a few RAs about mid-way through my turnset, but we're starting to pull ahead so much in tech that the AIs want a ridiculous amount of GPT, Gold, and resources.
In retrospect I probably should have taken the Volunteer Army tenet instead of New Deal, but we can still nab it later on. We'll see what ends up happening in Heerlo's turnset.

Sorry, didn't get it all done yesterday. Hoping to get it this evening.

No worries. I don't think Redwings has signed a publishing deal where we have to have it finished by a certain date (and if he did, I'd like a slice of that cash, please.)

Haha, well, considering how long it took me to update my second section, you're either safe on that count or I procrastinated enough to get us very close to the publishing deal deadline without your help. Don't feel pressured to do this quickly.

Peace and Prosperity

Heerlos second "term" was, much like his first term, a time of peaceful growth and coexistence with the rest of the world. But Austria had changed much since Heerlo was last there. With more territory, and more diplomatic relationships, he had much more to manage than before.

Diplomacy

Most foreign powers got along fairly well with Austria. However, one in particular who did not was Assyria. Austria had once invaded Assyria and conquered two of their major coastal cities, so Heerlo couldn't entirely blame them for their bitterness. Still, though, he had to deal with the diplomatic effects of their denouncements of Austria.
Spoiler :

Heerlo, however, understood their resentment of Austria, and instead tried to mend relations with Assyria, choosing no retaliatory denouncements. When it was discovered that Assyria had been spying on Austria and attempting to steal technology, Austrian diplomats confronted the Assyrian leader. But Heerlo chose to forgive the Assyrian government, hoping to improve relations with the country.

Heerlo continued Austria's good relations with the United States, Carthage, and Russia. And although he preferred mostly staying out of alliances in the east, he continued the friendship with India that his predecessors had established.

During Heerlo's second reign term, Austria once again became the host of the World Congress. Shortly thereafter, the World Congress began the World's Fair, in which Austria contributed the second most effort.

Domestic Growth

Alot of Heerlo's second term was spent simply governing Austria and continuing to build up infrastructure. It was during Heerlo's second term that an Austrian expedition laid clam to land south of Vienna, mostly in order to gain access to resources in the area(aluminum). Heerlo also began establishing an Austrian railroad network, and by the end of his reign term, Kuala Lumpur and Vatican City had been connected to Vienna by rail.

Economic Changes

Although most of Austria's trade had been land-based throughout history, Heerlo began attempting to change it over to sea-based trade. These, however, proved to be more dangerous than land trade, because of pirates who preyed on merchant ships going to Sweden. Heerlo had to dispatch the Austrian navy to protect these new trade routes. By the end of his reign, about half of Austria's trade was sea-based.

Heerlo's Departure

One day, Heerlo informed his cabinet that he had to leave, because some nation called "Persia" was about to need leadership. Heerlo once again left his adviser, Js9001, in charge of Austria.

Out of Character Notes

Once again, not much happened. I built Neuschwanstein in the city to the east of Vienna(I think that city's named Salzburg, right?). I maintained friendships with America, Russia and Carthage, but I think they've all gone Order. I think Ethiopia and India also both went Order. Hiawatha went with Freedom. And I founded Graz down south, mostly to get the eight aluminum next to it. It's also next to a mountain, so we could build an observatory there to help us stay ahead in tech.
Spoiler :

I didn't rename the save file, so it still says 1822 on it, but it is the right one.

The fact that computers love order hit us decently hard, and it's going to be hard to keep up diplomacy in the near future. All it will take is one denouncement from one of our allies and Hiawatha is our only ally remaining. Trying to repair relationships with Assyria is rather pointless right now I think, since we've captured their original capital. That's a decently huge negative modifier, made worse because they will always covet that land too. If Assyria or Rome goes order, we're screwed over in the diplomatic game. Fortunately, they'll probably go autocracy.

Good job with creating more cargo ships. We do need to start getting more sea based trade. Also, nice work on Neuschwanstein. That will help us tremendously if we continue to build up peacefully. We have a pretty big empire right now. I am wondering what you're doing with 6000 gold saved up. Are you planning on rush buying labs or something? I feel like just giving that money to city states wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea.

Oh, I've always wondered: Do you get any sort of railroad benefits by connecting cities through harbors? Are cities on other continents just never going to have a railroad bonus (making railroads basically useless to build on other continents)? I've always thought that was a little weird.
