Future Options for Civ4 G/W/BoTM

Besides, do we really want to differentiate the versions by calling the Civ 4 XOTMs "IVOTM," which is not only really hard to visually recognize as being numbers and letters combined, but also has a very yucky-sounding anagram?? :vomit:
That's funny. When I read dV's post, my first reaction to VOTM was exactly the same. I saw "VOTM," I read "vomit"...

Seriously. But maybe that's just me...

As for this discussion, I think it's a bit of a joke. Are we going to legislate the language that naturally grows in a group? Yeah, right.

One possibility would be to not complicate life. Just pick the settings, generate a save, and there you have it. After all, we're talking about the difference between a standard Sid-generated game that becomes a WOTM or some sort of ideal game that will never happen again as a WOTM.

I like this idea. Why not have an "all bets are off" WOTM, where it is understood that
the game has just been randomly generated and the staff has invested (literally) no time in testing it ? Of course then complaining about some lack of playability would be nonsensical.

That way we could keep the WOTM at minimum effort from the staff.

Thanks for all your hard work in keeping these xOTMs going.

I like BtS, and I absolutely love BUFFY. I only played GotM or WotM if I got really bored, didn't like the settings for BotM, or had a bad start in BotM.

EDIT: On that note, I offer the small suggestion that non-BUFFY games of the month are more desirable when the BOTM game has more challenging (Immortal to Diety, or Emperor with a weak leader and fast game speed (faster game speed = harder))

I find I get through one GOTM too quickly and am waiting for the next one, so I would like there to be at least two games every month. So the initial idea of just keeping GOTM and BOTM going sounds good to me, but then so do some of these other suggestions.

Totally understand the need to cut down a bit because of Civ 5 though.

I think I just about only play the BtS, BOTMs, and they are fun but I'm not the most consistent/best player around either. Don't play vanilla GOTMs or warlords WOTMs. I can certainly see where are the concern over time is coming from and know a civ5 GOTM would be popular and expected of course.

So since I don't really have much of an opinion (other than I'd like to see the BOTMs keep going as the most complete version of civ4 and the best BUFFY mod) I shouldn't really say whether it's better to have vanilla GOTM or WOTMs or how to balance/alternate the two.

I'm not a big submitter, but I can't even recall playing Warlords or Vanilla since buying BTS with the exception of the odd G/WOTM.

I even bought complete just so I didn't have to change discs between versions.

I am one of the persons that only play GOTM. Maybe I am going to buy the extension packs in a distant future. But lately I have barely had time to complete the GOTM each month. I would play less Civ4 if there were only one GOTM every second month, but that would free up time for Civ5 or maybe I would buy some of the extensions, or even try out the GOTM for Civ3 or Civ2. The point I am trying to make is that I try to play the GOTMs that are available, but would probably not miss them if they came with larger intervals.

Don't work more with the XOTM's than what would still be fun!

As a not quite reliable player (no game submitted for almost a year if not more), my words may be of a lesser importance.
Still I found that I don't enjoy warlords or vanilla anymore. BtS is now clearly better, more so with BUFFY being an improvement over the normal interface.
So IMHO, vanilla and warlords can die (maybe slowly, like warlords first, then after civ 5's mod is ready vanilla can be left out too).

It may sound harsh, but what I mean is I'm not going to play GotM and WotM, while I'm going to play BotM.
(I didn't submit BotM 34 only because I retired so early it's not worth submitting)

This applies to me also. I fall lovingly into the bracket of those not able to play civ5 just because my comp isn't good enough. I do play the GOTM and WOTM because they're there but i'd much prefer just having a regular BOTM.

I play the GOTM and BOTM, never bought Warlords. I plan on waiting on Civ 5 until: (a) I get a new computer; and (b) the bugs get ironed out.

My preference would be to keep the BOTM as a monthly game. I'd be fine with alternating GOTM/WOTM or an 8/4 split, especially since I sometimes don't have enough time to play both GOTM/BOTM in a given month due to RL.

There, that should get rid of the "you haven't posted in several weeks" nag screen.
