[GS] Future Update?

So are current thoughts that we will see some signs of life on the 23rd?

It could happen. But it would only be a higher chance then normal. Not a certainty. It might be 3 weeks from now somewhere in februari for all we know or this thurday.
There is some logic/thought behind it but we cant know for sure as firaxis is silent with its fanbase untill the last possible moment before releasing new stuff.
Multiple times in the past there were serious delays when new content got announced. When it took like 3 weeks before hearing anything again from firaxis after an announcement till lauch was ready across all platforms.
I`ll say firaxis is extra carefull which results in even longer waiting times before hearing anything. Firaxis does not want to anger fanbase by not delivering.
The result is pointless fillers on social media like twitter/facebook about sean bean civ memes and what leader you like to play. Or a recently added wonder/victory type and such.
There is not something like a developer talking about what is going on with civ 6. Total silence. Which is the total opposite from a company like paradox that communicates more in one random week then firaxis does in 3 months.

Ooooh, I know! I got it. I got it! *raises hand* They're going to add a new era BEFORE the Classical Era. The "era of STicKs and stones!"!

Sticks and stones may break my bones
but Ghandi nukes my house

I'm not really bothered that the devs aren't that communicative. Of course, I wish they had something to share with us.

The only things that irritate me are the fluff tweets on Twitter about who your favourite leader is for X victory, when they know very well that people are hoping for bug fixes or patch/DLC news.

The one time they were communicative a few updates ago, the update got delayed and people got upset with them, so it's kind of a lose-lose situation for them.

First of all, there is a difference between:
A - New expansion x with features y comming 21.05.2020
B - yes we are working on a third expansion, no we do not plan third expansion.
We lack B kind of information.
Now we are waiting for a hype train, but we don't even know there is any railroad near.

apart from the devs talking about upcoming surprises and that development for civ 6 is not over.
Plus hidden activity on steam.

Yeah, maybe it's because I don't follow any other games as closely but I don't understand the whining about this very much. When it comes it comes. Geez.

The situation is complicated as well by the fact that we are in unknown territory.

Civ VI's content cycle has broadly followed that of Civ V. Civ V had a round of DLC followed by two expansions punctuated with occasional patches. So when we were, say, between the Khmer/Indonesia DLC and the R&F announcement, or the R&F release and the GS announcement, we could be fairly confident that an expansion would be announced sooner or later.

Whereas now, because Civ V didn't have a third expansion (and in fact a Civ title has never had one, at least not for a long time), we have less reason to expect one. Even though there are definitely suggestions of something, there's no template to follow now that we have missed the November "announcement window".

If the game was bug free and enjoyable there would probably be no expectation of a patch.

For one example, there has been a bug for almost ½ a year that lets you get unlimited settlers and workers. That bug “works” both in singleplayer and multiplayer. They havent even acknowledged that they are aware of it.

The multiplayer side of the game is dead. Not that I care - I never play multiplayer civ. Its just amazing how bad at PR firaxis is...

That is not true, go check CPL, there are at all time multiple games happening. They have a lot of modders and abuse of the pantheon bug can easily be identified by other players. Plus most of them are probably honest players.

Well, that's just your opinion. I'm not playing a multiplayer game based on trust. That would be like playing monopoly blind with your family... pretty sure one of them would cheat.

It's not a question of "when", but "if". And this kind of information should be a basic standard in producer - customer communication.
But why? When they announce an expansion they typically drop like an hour of preview videos and other materials. It's pretty exciting and I'm not sure tipping their hand before that would make it more exciting.

I bring good news. Maybe.

If you read my post some pages ago regarding how Firaxis announcements and releases seem set up to match with Steam sales, this further supports the 23rd of January theory, though it lends some support to 28th/30th as well, since some announcements/releases have been made not at the beginning but at the end of a sale.

The third and fourth paragraph also read "All games are invited to participate... will not count towards the normal 8-week discount cooldown." [...] "not possible to submit a discount within 30 days of..."-> This could be a Red Flag. Companies aren't free to discount their games whenever they want on Steam. I wasn't aware of this. Which means Firaxis would want to time them effectively.
---

On Twitter they've just posted "Today is your last chance to save up to 75% off on Civilization VI content." - Does this mean they are skipping the sale? Have they ever? Most likely the game will be on sale again as soon as the Lunar Year Sale starts, so this might be a bit of ruse.

It would be nice if they could throw us at least a small bone e.g. we are working on new content and we will have more to tell you in a couple of weeks.

Should I start a new game when a patch could drop any minute or not for ages?

Im sure there will be 3rd expansion and here is why:
  1. They say its a first unique governor coming to CIV 6 (Ibrahim Pasha). Im sure they not gonna make another CIV game before bringing second (3rd, 4th etc.) unique governor to the game.
  2. Alternative Leaders. There should be more of them, i think they also not gonna leave CIV 6 before bring more alternative leaders.
  3. New future era technology system was just test, and im sure they will want to improve it to make late game more unique.
I hope they announce 3rd expansion (New big DLC) soon, because i can't wait to play more CIV6 :crazyeye:

Edit: BTW i want to see some new mechanics about barbarians and riot system. Its will be fun if barbarians can make their own empire. Conquering city can give them an early empire stage with unique name (Tood Tribe, Dennis Empire, Carl Tribe xD)

I don't mind lack of weekly updates. If you talk too much, you run the risk of making promises you can't keep. What was the game that got burned by that? No Man's sky or something like that? I haven't played it, just heard about it. If they run into problems and can't implement the things they promise, fans will get upset.

I'm okay with playing it old school and hearing about it when I hear about it. We have all lost patience now days, myself included. Just the other day I was wondering when watching an old HBO series on streaming how painful it must have seemed to have to wait a whole week before I find out what happens to these characters. But I did it, and it didn't seem hard to wait back then. Now days I just want to binge watch and queue up the next episode to find out what happens. I just like little hints that they are working on something. I don't need everything spelled out for me.

and in fact a Civ title has never had one, at least not for a long time

Civ2 being the only one I can think of that got 3.
