Galactic Civilizations III announced!

You can't see it, but I'm losing my mind.

As long as I can create/customize my own race, I'll be happy.

Never played much of Galactic Civilizations I and II, mostly I know it from watching my cousin play. Not too much into 4X stuff nowadays, but I think I'll probably buy this eventually when it's on sale.

Looks awesome! Too bad it is USD 40 to get in on the beta. That's quite a lot for a poor college student like myself. :(

Edit: I wonder how much involvement Kael had/has with the development of this now with his new job.

Hell to the yes, GalCiv 2 was one of my favorite 4x games. Will be eagerly awaiting this one! And if it sucks... I still own GalCiv 2.

Nice. I hope they take the time to develop a full release version for the initial release. Rather that and DLC, then promises, promises.

64-bit sounds awesome, as does the AI focus. Definitely will be following.

Pity it's Steam-only, though. It's kind of concerning how so many of the major games are requiring Steamworks - not that there's anything wrong with it as an option, I just like to have some competition in the marketplace. And I don't think Steam is the best game download service out there, aside perhaps from cross-platform advocacy.

While I have expectations for GC3, I think brick and mortar store PC gaming is dead (and yeah I actually now have a Steam Civ5, despite hating the abandonment of Civ4 and the corrupted last gasps of brick-and-mortar store purchases by online-only activation), and most digital download alternatives are running off of Steam anyways. Possibly this is just the best option for Stardock since they are a bit of a niche/indie PC publisher. Stardock sold their own digital delivery system IIRC.

I'd say there's none that beat Valve at digital delivery and service. Who would you rather see get the gig? I mean they could go indie crowd-source funding and leave Steam keys as a tier funding, but hmmmmmmm why bother?

Judging from the trailer... they are going to improve planet invasions?

Shame StarDock's COE is a arse. :( (warning: language in link)

I love it when stuff is hidden behind paywalls.

Stardock did sell their digital delivery system, Impulse. I used to buy a few games off of it, but they sold it to GameStop, and it's been problematic (the program itself) pretty much ever since GameStop's first update. I ended up buying CivIII on Steam again for $1.25 rather than to fight to get my GameStop version working (I don't know where in the world my CDs are).

I like Gamersgate, mainly because you can download the installer standalone, and once you've got that, you don't have to worry about the service going kaput. Not that that's likely anytime soon with Steam, but Impulse's near-demise showed me that it's possible for a service to at least become significantly less useful due to something like a sale. Amazon offers the same option, with the only real downside being that they aren't a games-focused company. In the end, I buy from Steam, Gamersgate, and Amazon, and every so often GOG. I kind of want to buy Daikatana from GOG because I've heard so many bad reviews of it (and it's $1 less than on Steam).

It'll be interesting to see what's in store with the new spaceships. It sounds like they might have more meaningful customization than GCII (which wasn't bad to begin with).

I learnt this great new yesterday and I immedietely lost my mind completely and spent 99 bucks for elite founder edition haha. Cant wait! This game is my all time favorite strategy. Especially with Star trek vs Star wars mod.

GalCiv3 with multiplayer! This game will be a serious competitor to Civ5 and EU4 for me. I'd play FE:LH alot more too, if it had MP (a grand game indeed, and fun in single player after all).

There's a new journal up talking about the Drengin ship design with a cool illustration. :)

Link

The Drengin are a race of evil warmongers. They are known for their offensive capabilities and toughness, so we used large trapezoidal shapes for the rear of the ships and aggressive, triangular shapes for the front. This way we could achieve ships that appear both tank-like and aggressive. Two of our biggest inspirations were the Batmobile from The Dark Knight and the Mars tunnel vehicle from Total Recall. Each ship has large armored pieces protecting gunmetal access points and vents. We shifted the color scheme from green and red to a richer yellow-green and burgundy, since we are planning to use bold colors such as bright red for elements in the interface.
