Game crashes after selecting directx

I have the same problem with the exception that the game doesnt close. All I get is an invisible window in the center of the screen and a Civilization 5 (dx9) program running on my start bar. When I try to right click the Civ 5 program to manualy choose quit it says that the program isn´t responding and asks if I want to close it. I press yes and nothing happens, it´s still running. I have to restart the computer to make it stop.

I have the same problem with verifying the game cach and I have a special letter in my account but I made a new one without and it had exactly the same problems. I also updated all my drivers but nothing happend.

I do have a swedish verison of Windows XP and I have SP 3.

It didn't work for me. I still have exactly the same problem as before. But the sfc /scannow command had problems with one file. I required a disk I didn't have, some professional server disk or something, that might be the problem.

edit: sfc /scannnow wants CD for XP professional server. I have never owned or installed anything with that name.

Quoting the ms article refered to in my proposed fix: "If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the cache folder (%Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache) or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file."

Maybe you could simply insert your windows disk and try again? Assuming you're not playing from a server os, disregard what disk it asks for, and simply use the one you installed windows from.

Didn't work for me either. It did find some problems and it said it couldn't fix all of them. I then restarted my computer and tried the game but it didn't work. Then I opened windows in safemode and did the sfc /scannow again, but this time it didn't find any problems.

It didn't ask for any disks though.

It did also ask for my installation disk later and that worked fine but I tried a second time and it still asks for the professional server disk. Accualy it still wants my installation disk the second time around.

Thanks for helping guys but this feels a bit hopeless. It really puts me of buying anything from steam or 2k/firaxis again.

Did you guys try all the steps I did before running that command? (Reinstalling dx, drivers, CvRedist_x86?)

And what oses are you guys running?

I run XP SP3

I updated both my graphics drivers and DX9.
I validated in steam and got 1 file error that didn't go away.
I didnt do the 3. Installing the CvRedist_x68 found in \\yoursteamfolder\common\sid meiers civ5\vcredist one. Never heard of it.

Im currently trying to sfc /scannow again and will try to do your third step after that.

Vista x64 SP2

I tried that scan again in normal mode and it didn't find any problems this time either. Seems like it fixed them on the first try. And I did update DX, catalyst and that VCredist.

When sfc no longer reports any issues, are you still getting the same errors in the event log?

Yes. It still complains about the MSVCR90.dll file.

Viallinen sovellus CivilizationV_DX11.exe, versio 1.0.0.17, aikaleima 0x4c9b9292, virhemoduuli MSVCR90.dll, versio 9.0.30729.1, aikaleima 0x488ef6c5, poikkeuskoodi 0xc0000417, virhepoikkeama 0x000369de, prosessin tunnus 0x7f4, sovelluksen käynnistysaika 0x01cb5d6be1a45a2e.

It works! thank you so much Kvess and ainwood. Finaly it works after I did all those steps you recommended. Most of them several times. I can't say exactly what did it but now it works. I just hope it will work again next time I try it.

I did get a black screen for a while where I suspect that the intro movie should be playing but I can live with that. Now I have to go away just when I finaly get it started :/ but if it works when I get back I will be very happy.

Good luck je111 I hope yours will work too.

Glad you got it working. :)

This basically comes down to making sure that the correc file (MSVCR90.dll) is in the right place and that it is the right version. I had a look through my own computer in an attempt to figure out what the right version is, but found seven copies and five different versions, all in folders like "C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.21022.8_none_750b37ff97f4f68b", which didn't tell me much, at least.

That MSVCR90.dll is somehow related to that Microsoft Visual C++ Redist thing right? Atleast I think I have the latest versions of them. I took a picture from the control panel.

Good thing you got it to work. Did you reinstall anything specific before you got it to work? My DirectX is up to date and it won't download anything new for it. Catalyst is up to date and these MSVCR things are maybe too.

Sounds reasonable, though I'm not entirely sure. In any case, I've attached how the same list looks for me.

I've tried about everything but it won't work . Uninstalled all those things listed before and reinstalled them + let Windows update them but no effect. I guess I just need to wait for a patch for Firaxis to fix this.

I was just about ready to give up after I ran the CvRedist_x68 found in \\yoursteamfolder\common\sid meiers civ5\vcredist and I tried validating through steam and it still found 1 error. But then it automaticly downloaded something else wich I think might have been the patch for special letters and then when I validated again it worked!

I'm having the same type of problem, check the direct X and right to the close program. Here is the error report:

I am below specs but someone else here is running on my same specs. Neither demo nor game works. Dies at same spot. Can anyone tell me what this APPCRASH is?

I have the same problem, game crashes after choosing DirectX. I just choose it and nothing else happens. I have also checked that I don´t have a Civi directory in My games, and when I validate the game it says something is wrong, so steam downloads somethings that doesn´t solve the problem.
I have installed the game in my girlfriend´s computer, and it works there, so it´s an issue with mine, but can´t figure out what. I have updated nVidia drivers and DirectX, try the sfc /scannow solution and every other thing I have read here, but the problem continues.

Any clue?
