Game crashes during ranged attacks

Could you please post your dxdiag as well? Our graphics team is trying to pin this one down, so dxdiag files help quite a bit.

Finaly back from work and ready to play the game!

1. Please find my DxDiag.txt attached below
2. I started the game with DX10 / 11 now and tried lowering the the detail levels and switched off the shadow rendering. No freezing in 3 hours of gameplay and unlike before the patch, the game runs fast and smooth now! You guys did a great job on optimizing the performance with this patch. (if I run the game under DX9 however, it is still freezing during the ranged combat. But now that DX10 / 11 runs fast, no need to go back to DX9 - at least for me)

Thanks!

Hello,

I am also experiencing this issue. When you attempt to attack with a city the game simply locks up. There is no flashing. I just freezes. I did notice that steam seemed to update the game or install new files before the game turned on tonight.

Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) Service Pack
3.00 gigahertz AMD Phenom II X4 960T
1 Ghz AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series

Game was running fine until the other day. Began to freeze anytime during a ranged attack. ONly gives me the option of playing on DX9 when I have DX11. Created a shortcut for the DX11 version and got a black screen with a blue "out of Range" message that said
H, Frequency 75KHZ
V, Frequency 60Hz

Attached my DXdiag.

Similar here. Not a "city" crash, but a "bombard" crash. Ethiopian Crossbow trying to attack Viking. Bombard arrow begins to draw (the big red arched arrow), gets to about 20% of the way there, and whole game freezes.

Only animation occurring is the red cursor. It's slowly pulsing.

Must Ctrl+Alt+Del and kill with task manager.

Running DX9 version (DX11 has too much flickering now, on torches, great shrine beacons, etc.)

DXDiag attached, provided I did this right. (New to this forum.)

Game used to work perfectly fine before previous patch, in DX11. Then it started drawing black holes in the terrain, which followed the camera (pan camera, hole would move). Started using DX9. Now can't even play DX9 because of hang in latest patch.

Oh, and I can't update my video drivers beyond what I have - ATI's latest do not support this hardware. Stuck at 12.4 for the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 (trust me, I've tried all drivers thru 12.10, but they just don't support this card).

EDIT: Save file attached, too.

We're looking into this now. Can you describe exactly what you see when the crash occurs? Does it instantly hang? Do the graphics seem to start blinking before it hangs?

For me this only happens with the Ethiopians.

When highlighting an enemy unit to hit by city bombardment, right after I click to attack the large red arrow will travel 2/3rds of the way to the enemy unit and then the game will freeze. Task Manager shows Civ 5 as not responding.

The same thing happens when trying to attack by clicking on the red target icon on the lower right corner of the screen.

I haven't noticed any blinking before the game hangs. Instantaneous game hang.

EDIT Moderator Action: Merged a thread from the bug reports forum into this one.

What type of monitor do you use? Anything unusual (means not a normal TFT)?

The game crashes between turn 30-35 using DX9 (Steam wont let me use DX10/11 because it says I don't have Service Pack 2?

Updating graphics drivers didn't work. DXDIAG posted, any and all help appreciated!!!

Steam wont let me use DX10/11 because it says I don't have Service Pack 2?

Please check if Steam and/or Civ5 have not maybe been installed in Windows Vista compatibility mode (right click on the exe -> properties -> go to the tab "compatibility" -> see if the boxes for compatibility mode are checked).
Then please test if you can run the game under Dx11.

And for this problem here: Does the crash maybe appear during a ranged attack?

OK I checked and neither the Steam or CIV V exe files had windows vista service pack 2 compatibility checked. I have since checked the box. But it still doesnt allow me to use DX 10/11. I am running windows 7 does that matter?

And yes it appears to occur as soon as i attempt to launch a ranged attack.

Please uncheck the boxes again.
Theoretically your system is perfect for the DX11 mode, and your crash should not appear in it, therefore we should figure out why you can't run it.

To follow up on my earlier post... As others have seen, I am able to bombard under DX11 (both cities and ranged units) without the hang.

However, I did crash. Attached is my game save plus crash dump.

Crashed when I tried to declare war on Denmark. This is on top of the constant effect flickering (anything with transparency, it seems - even dust trails on cities' defending themselves with the boulder throw). Seems like the flicker is every other draw/render cycle?

EDIT: Add'l info. I was able to reload that save on DX11 and continue playing for a bit. Crash again as soon as Austria tried to ask me for decl of friendship. Unable to load that save on DX9. Hangs before terrain is drawn.

I've got ~510 hours played on this game, and this is the one patch that will prevent me from playing it, I'm sorry to say. I just can't do it. And Ethiopia is the ONE civ that I have not yet beaten the game with. Game has never crashed on me before, and I've had two crashes today. I used to play with my textures on high, even leader animations. Now I can't even get through a half hour, and that's with a bunch of stuff turned down.

Could you please post your DXDIAG so we can take a look? Also, a couple things to check.

1. Is GPU Texture Decode on (under options)? If so, turn it off.
2. If you turn the leader quality down to "minimum", does that stop the issue from occurring?
3. Could you check your Civ V root folder for .mdmp files that correspond to the date and time of the crash? If they are there and match up with the time of the crash, please post them here so we can take a look.

Thanks!

My DXDiag is further up this page. GPU Texture Decode is not available to me (it's visible, but grayed out, cannot select). Leader quality is already on minimum. My first crash dump is in the zip file in my previous post. My 2nd crash dump is here:

When it crashes (you mentioned it happens when the leaders come up), is it while you are still in the leader scene?

Yes, but I would say in under 2 seconds. Leader comes up, freezes briefly, then the "Windows is checking for solutions to this problem" dialog box.

Hi there,
I'm having the same issues as mentioned above. I've played Civ V for ages all fine. Then yesterday it started crashing only on ranged attacks (Mostly City attack, but also archers).
This is only since the new update that supports Windows 8.
I'm using Windows 7 SP1. directX9
I tried to implement the suggestions about changing the compatibility to DirectX11, but it wouldn't take on steam.exe. I can't find the Civ exe file..
I tried re-installing from the original disk, but it updated itself automatically and i'm back where i started.

Any help?

For me it was between turns. It finishes processing everyones turns and the mouse curser turns back to a pointer, but you can't actually press anything. Graphics looks fine and mouse moves but nothing works. Ctrl+alt+del to end the task
