Game crashes during ranged attacks

Your system is below min spec unfortunately. The operating system needs to be win XP sp3, and the minimum video card is the 2600 XT, which you can probably get away with. Is there a reason you haven't upgraded your system to sp3?

I never upgraded to SP3 cuase the original civ5 and God and Kings ran fine until this patch so I go by the theory "if it aint broke dont fix it" .I never had any problems and the game was running pretty good up til now.Was there some thing different in this patch versus the previous one that makes this not run on SP2?I would hate upgrade and then still have this issue.

if this can help the game crashes 3 times trying to bomb with range attack barbs still in ancient age...normal single game no mod
my amd drivers have been updated with the latest a few days ago

I have seen others post about these bugs but I have not seen any fixes. After the patch, my games freeze randomly after a five or 10 turns, and also when I use a ranged unit to attack. I will attempt to attach the diag to this post. Please be patient I've never posted in the forum before, so I don't know if I'm even in the right place. I just want to play. Additionally, is there any way we can opt OUT of future patches? Civ 5, for me, was fine the way it was. I never asked or opted for a patch. Now I can't play.

I have the same problem, ranged attack from city freezes the game. All my drivers are up to date, am using dx9 because dx10 makes everything look blurry. Will try upgrading to windows 8 (from windows 7) this weekend.
Btw is the windows 8 option only for use with touchscreens?

I also am freezing when using my ranged unit. Mine occurred when I used the unit from plains. I have now read the sticky for this so I am posting here (I put an original thread up as well). However, I do not know how to upload saved games here. I will attempt it here but I may need some instruction on that. Ok, now I tried to attach the dx diag and I get an error message saying I can't because I already attached it in my original thread...Ok, I have no idea where to find the game's save files..help.

You can find save files here:

\My Documents\my games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single\

And you may want to check for .mdmp files (very helpful to the engineers). If they correspond in creation date with your crash, please attach them and we can grab them. You can find them in the Civ V root directory. Mine is located here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\

This also started happening to me post patch... was fine two days ago before the patch. now crashes on ranged attacks from cities or units. '

Thought switching to Strat view might allow me to, and it did the first couple attacks.. ends up being about a 33% chance on ranged attack for it happen in this view, although the mode of screwing up is completely different.

In the regular view with a ranged attack the game straight freezes with mouse control but unable to hit anything. Have to go to task manager to close.

In Strat view it's almost like the graphics start to bug out, artifacting etc and within 3 seconds the game just closes/crashes out.

Using DX9, on a vista x64 machine, ATI graphics card

Hello everyone,

Same problem here - the game freezes after ranged combat is initiated either by a ranged unit or a city, before selecting the target. The game also sometimes freezes during the AI turns - I sometimes cannot see what action AI had taken before the game froze, so I can only guess it was also related to ranged attacks.

This is happening only with DX9, I experience no problems under DX10 / 11 (the game runs faster with DX9 on my older computer, that's why I prefere DX9 to DX10 / 11)

Reading the previous posts from others players, it seems to me the common denominator is that we are all using ATI Radeon graphic cards.

Thank you in advance, Firaxis guys, for sorting this out, I will be playing with DX10 / 11 for now.

Got Civ5 off of steam two weeks ago, having the same problem with ranged attacks. I clicked on a barbarian unit and the game froze.

AH you're right.. i didn't even notice that.

Could you please post your dxdiag as well? Our graphics team is trying to pin this one down, so dxdiag files help quite a bit.

Try killing your directx11.ini file in your "my documents/my games/civ v folder before you start it up.

That did it :) Wow, what a difference playing directX11. FAST and smooth. Thanks for all the help.

Since the latest patch my games are also freezing between turns, every 10-15 turns or so, at the same point if I reload a save.

I run DX9, which I've always ran without issue up untill yesterday.

For some reason I can't run DX10/11, when I select it, the game starts booting up goes through the credits, then I get a blank screen with a message from my monitor saying "no video available". Never got to the bottom of that, never bothered because the game ran fine on DX9.

I'm seeking help. I checked for this bug as directed and didn't find it. When any of my cities attacks an enemy unit the game freezes and I have to "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to open task mgr. and end the process. All my drivers are up to date. I'm using a 32 bit Dell Inspiron 530 with an ATI HD 4600 video card. HELP!!! CAN"T PLAY CIV!

Ok as ridiculous as it sounds that works for me too, I can run directx11 by deleting this file. I can also load up my save and get past the turn which it constantly froze at running directx9.

Running 11 is a bit jolty and unresponsive compared to 9 which im use to. I'll try tweaking some graphic stuff.

We're looking into this now. Can you describe exactly what you see when the crash occurs? Does it instantly hang? Do the graphics seem to start blinking before it hangs?

Hooray for small victories. :) At least we got you going while we try to pin down the DX9 issue.
