If you're new to Civ and learning the ropes, set your game up for victory. For example, if you're expansionist/agricultural, set a pangaea world (so you can get lots of goody huts for your expansionist bonus) and a hot/arid world (so you have a lot of deserts for your agricultural bonus).

Then, don't play against any civs that are expansionist or agricultural. That way, your scouts get the goody huts first and your opponents starve in the desert. Each attribute has a way of doing this.

And usually, stay away from a lot of naval warfare, if you're new. I've always found civ's naval warfare to be one of the toughest parts of the game.
