Both of my finished games ended with less than 40 turns left, but I wasn't even close to completing the tech tree and have yet to use a plane or tank, complete an ICBM, or see an entire civ exterminated. Odd.

My question is what should I change about my settings to see more of the game? Currently I use the custom option, continents, noble diff, standard map size, aggressive civs, and no tech trading.

I'm going to remove the Space Victory option for my next game, but any other tweak advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh man, only 5 hours left of work and then I get to start a new game. Can't someone point me in the right direction?

Visit this thread here. Awesome tip by this guy, I tried it last night and was very pleased. Normal games were just way too fast.

I edited the normal settings, changing research speed from 100 to 150. I also replaced the normal game turn info with the epic turn info.

Now, it takes a bit longer to research techs and the game lasts longer on the normal game setting due to the epic speed, but the buildings and units and such are still all done on normal speed. I enjoyed this much more than the standard settings.

Thanks Black. How long did it take you to edit this stuff? I'm, at times, very computer illiterate!

"no tech trading."

That's your problem right there. No tech trading will slow down the tech advancement of the game quite a bit.

The other "problem", no civ being exterminated is becasue the AI defends its cities very well. In fact I'd wager to say it couldn't beat its own defenses... :crazyeye:

All told, about thirty seconds. It takes longer to find the line(s) you want to edit than it does to actually edit. Very easy to do.

Before you edit the XML file, be sure to copy the original, unedited file and store it on your PC just in case you inadvertently mess something up. That was if you do change something that shouldn't have been you can just replace it and start from scratch. But if you read through carefully the first, second, and third post of that thread, you'll understand what to do. It is very simple.

The original poster actually edited the epic settings, changing everything except the research rate and turns. I edited the normal settings, changing only the research rate and turns because that was less steps and I'm lazy.

** Or, you can edit the settings so that the tech rate is very fast while the game plays on epic speed, meaning you'll get to the end of the tech tree long before the game ends. **

Thanks again. I think they need an upload section here for the various settings and tweaks available. That way us noobs could quickly d/l something proven to work.

And I'll try the tech trading, but I hated the way the AI traded techs in Civ3. They seemed to abuse it and always outpace me.

I was going to say... tech trading might be it. Remember YOU can trade with them too, and if you make friends (which you should. not need to hate everyone outright). then you'll definately get your fair share of techs yourself.

however, if you want to keep in the no tech trading rule. and you infact want FASTER tech, then simply make this integer smaller:

<iResearchPercent> </iResearchPercent>

the number goes in between. I don't know which speed your on, if you're playing normal it's at 100, so you can either just play a fast style game, or change the number for normal games in the XML.

if you're already playing a fast style game and want faster research, then make the number smaller than 67 I believe the number is.

in any case, good luck. odd request though, most people find the game too fast already. :king:

I guess what I want is that combo of epic length and balanced trading where you actually use the units before they become obsolete. And actually researching everything and using the new buildings and such is a must. I'll be trying your tweaks when I get home. Thanks again.
