The AI in Civ V is far from good, we all can agree. My biggest grip with them is their lack of direction. Early game OCC is a fine example for me. One archer can lay waste to an incoming warband simply because the AI lacks the sense to attack the city and stop juggling its units around! Is there any way to at least fix this one fatal flaw (as I see it). Simple things like this are why I prefer Civ IV, despite several improvements made to this game...

Play humans(multiplayer).

Up your playing level... at higher levels, you can't usually get away with just 1 archer, as they send larger numbers, the higher the level...

I agree with quasar if you are able to defend with just one archer and complaining that its too easy you are playing at a low lvl, i played a game on Daity had 3 water res rushed colossus with one archer and warrior and got warrior rushed game over

Still I agree with OP, the tactical AI needs improvement. I have no idea how to do it though.

It is dissapointing that you have to use a deity level game as example.

The OP isn't breaking new ground with his statement as the AI is pretty broken (my most recent game saw me completely take out an Aztec invasion force while they were embarked, only to have Monty continuously send his Pikemen to the waves while my Caravels just picked them off one by one).

I play on Prince most of the time and can't get away with parking an archer or crossbowman for too long, it may work initially but the AI will eventually target him. I haven't played too much above that level though.

You are likely to get rushed and overwhelmed with just one archer at any level, Emperor or above... not sure about king. I did say "at higher levels" rather than Deity.

bozosmithy was, imo, giving an example from the "higher levels", rather than saying just Deity.

Bah. I usually Rush for Iron, stopping only to hit maybe masonry and perhaps archry if I feel an attack will come. The archer in conjuntion with the city is more than enough, and in fact the warrior I start with, the scout I create and then try to lvl up and one archer is able to stall or stop any early (before the ai ups their units) attack. I play marathon, and I mean this works up until turn 300 in some cases. Of course by then I have swords and am on the atk. I usually leave a horse (if I can) and 2-3 archers behind. I typically play emperor, with either Japan, Rome, or Germany.

The dumb S*** the ai thinks it can pull is an insult to me. When I play on emperor without ruins and find myself with rifles and the ai with longswords I will complain all day. One rifleman can basically take their weaker cities unaided.
