Something I dug up myself, too:
# of doctors in the American Medical Association: ~240,000 (2007)
# of physicians & surgeons in the US: 661,400 (2008)
Therefore AMA membership would be about 36% of doctors.
Since this Bureau of Labor stat doesn't include specialists like podiatrists, optometrists, and other medical doctor professions, the actual percentage of doctors in the AMA is necessarily lower. As the article details, membership by med students, residents, and retirees (all non-practicing doctors) dominates the entire population of the AMA.
