IMHO, this was a pointless war that wasted resources and probably cost more to end than they had demanded in the first place.

turn 10 (350ad)

loaded a galley with MW - needs to go to Akwesasne or Tonawanda

NOTES/THOUGHTS:

We need to quit focusing on culture for a while and focus on military and GO TO WAR AND HAVE A DECISIVE VICTORY. We need to dispose of Russia before they get Cossacks. They also lead us in culture.

Once we have the land, we can focus on culture. I'm not even sure we can win the way we're going, much less beat the target cultural victory date.

Got it. Play tomorrow.

Need to postpone playing this one for another 18 hours or so. Will post late afternoon Saturday.

Sorry for the hold up.

350-450AD

Quiet, too quiet.

Trade Rome Furs for dyes and cash then turned down luxury tax and tried to squeeze the most gold I could out of the realm.

A recon of Odessa showed a musket in the garrison so set the strong producers to building Mounted Warriors with a plan of buying Cavalry from somebody and upgrading to knights. The iron finally connected so I also built some pikes.

We have enough force at Krasnoyarsk to take Riga, I think and that wold eliminate any threat from the back door. We need to beef up the defense in the eastern towns with pikes and catapaults before making any move, then use that as a killing zone for any Russian offensive. The towns are pretty well sited to do that and if we drop a town on the red dot it should be complete.

Gator01_450AD.jpg

The white dots show the fields where cat fire would interlock and with roads it would be easy to shuttle between the towns.

With a couple of cats and some mounties in each it should be pretty secure till we can get knights on line, or more Mounties to push an offensive.

The Russians keep exercising their spears and longbows in the vicinity of Oil Springs.

I did squeeze another 14cpt by rushing libraries and temples where those were missing and I could afford it.

There are four more Mounted Warriors and 3 more pikes then in 350AD, so we are making some progress toward building military. We are going to need about six catapults and twelve Mounted Warriors and six pikes to cover the eastern killing zone.

I have it. I like the kiling zone plan. Will execute as designed.

Bede - Sounds like you'll be up to your ears in snow by the time the storm passes.

Pre-flight – Playing in PTW. All is in order.

Early - In 470 , A Russian knight comes charging out of the east and I get this message:
Gator1C_-_Russo-German_war.jpg

I set up a block to keep the Russians out of our lands while, we set up the Abbott’s Gauntlet
Salamanca: MW=>settler=>MW
St. Regis: cat=>cat
Niagara: MW=>MW

Middle – Cathy has Galleons. Cathy pulls Egypt into her war. Stuttgart down on the isthmus begins to learn Russian.
Salamanca, Niagara: MW=>MW
St. Regis: cat=>cat
Cattaraugus: pike=>cat

Late – Theology=>Education Buy Chivalry from Egypt for 312G, 10GGPT & WM. Found Abbott's Gauntlet. German, Russia, and England are in the IA.
Gator River, Allegheny: Duct=>cat
German’s complete Smith’s, Russians build Newton’s

After Action – We probably need a few more cats, but after that we’ll be good to go with the gauntlet. Beware, we may be facing cavs soon.

So, the plan is to upgrade to knights, get a few more cats on hand and declare on Cathy. The idea here is land grab because we need more culture so the killing zones are for defense against the inevitable counter-attack.

Or, if the Russians seem willing to send the bulk of their forces into the desert below our mountains prior to invasion than that works for me as well.

Her forces are going to be split and so I hope we're looking looking at 50/50 between us and Germany. Even then we may still be out-numbered so we need to use combined forces and slant the attrition rate heavily in our favor. We can't afford to have Knights hung out for counter attacks.

Is this too cautious or do we need to attack w/ speed?

"Bede's Glove" is an attempt to get the kill ratio on our side. My thinking was declare, then soak up the attackers. Russia is going to have lots of troops to send our way so we need to kill them first before going on the offensive. Once the intitial rush is used up we can move forward. If we can manage to do it and keep building kill zones as we go it should work.

@Bugs, Not my ears, just my hips but that's a lot of snow. Haven't seen this much snow and wind since I left Minnesnowta in December 2001. (And that came in November)

Turn 0 – 550 AD
Min run at Education.
Knights and cats building w/ the majority of builds culture.
Culture at 4,174. Only 95,826 left to go.
We are weak compared to both Germany and Russia so hopefully Bismarck is giving Catherine hell.

Turn 1 – 560 AD
Knight beget knight and cats beget cats.
We’re going to need pikes at home because Catherine is going to land troops in our backyard once we declare.

Turn 2 – 570 AD
No deals. Hooking up the second gem.3

Turn 3 – 580 AD
Persia declared on the Germans.

Turn 4 – 590 AD
A few pikes are in and we have Russian troops in our territory but we’re still not ready to declare or provoke.

Well Germany and Russia have made peace. Now we’re really not ready.

Turn 5 – 600 AD
How’s this for irony. We get our second gem hooked up and the only AI that will trade us anything worthwhile (another lux and some gold) is Catherine. Argh!

Turn 6 – 610 AD
Upgrades from MW to knight are 80g and that’s 5 turns worth of savings.
Riga now is occupied by a rifle. This is horrible news.

I’m stopping right now because we really need to powwow as to next steps.

OK, how about disbanding some reg warriors in the core - they aren't helping happiness and are costing gold. Also I think we need tons more cats if we're going to be attacking rifles. Also, that means Russia probably has or can trade for MT and will get her GA when we go to war. We need some input from some of our warmongers on planning the war.

I don't think the outline changes much.

You're right about disbanding the reg wariors up top of the peninsula. Then build the best bombardment unit we can, put some pikes, cats and the strongest fast attack we can muster in the "Glove" towns, declare and hunker down until the counters are spent. Might help to have a settler or two ready to push the borders out when the time comes. Just make sure any new towns line up with the grid for fields of fire.

Good input. If nobody grabs my save before I get home I'll play out the last three turns and repost.

Play it out jb.

Remember to make your last attack into the fire of fire with a movement 2 unit. That way you can retreat into one of the glove towns.

Played out...

Warriors disbanded.

Turn 7 – 620 AD
More units and movement.

Turn 8 – 630 AD
Russia has ironclads and at least 6 frigates.
Swapping some units around for upgrade.
No trades whatsoever except w/ Catherine.

Turn 9 – 640 AD
Reduced entertainment to 0% and MM’ed St. Regis to pop a settler after hiring a revenuer.

Turn 10 – 650 AD
A Russian Cossack just entered our territory.
Troop movement. Upgraded a MW.

This was painful. I feel like we're slipping farther behind every turn. But we did get several expansions of boarders and I know we need to be patient for the moment.

I've setup an AA spoiler thread for us. We also have some comparison graphs thanks to Gyathaar.
