We know that the future tech "Giant Death Robot" can do the following things:
- "wade through shallow water" without embarking and while keeping all offensive abilities
- "jump over mountains"
(Source: Inca gameplay video)

Shouldn't the helicopter get these abilities, too?
- fly over "shallow" coastal water without embarking
- fly over mountains

It would be a disappointment if they didn't have this idea themselves, as those abilities have been asked for repeatedly.
At least modders should be able to "harvest" those abilities, but the lack of animations could be a problem...

DiscIaimer: I know that helicopters don't usually fight ships and have a limited maximal altitude. Still, they often attack from water or over lakes. Plus the maximal altitude for e.g. the AH-64 Apache is not actually that low - 6400m or 21,000 ft. This is enough to cross most mountain ranges at least along the valleys.
A combat malus vs ships might make sense, though.

It makes sense, but I have my doubts that this will be implemented for Helicopters.

I don't think I've ever built a helicopter. Am I to understand that when placed on a coast tile, that helicopters currently embark?

Yes. Embarking a helicopter seems really strange.

Yeah, I could see it being weird having a helicopter fly across the entire ocean, but it really seems unnatural for it not to be able to fly over a coast, or take off mid-ocean from a ship.

My thought would be that it never embarks and has to either end its turn over a land tile or a carrier.

+1; I want Helicopters to actually fly over lakes and coastal tiles and mountains.

Then again, looking at it from a different perspective:

There WILL be bad mood once players realize that helicopters embark while GDR's don't. Or when players start realizing that GDR's can cross mountains while helicopters have to use a tunnel.
If they become aware of the issue, they should really realize the obvious solution.

Or maybe the GDR's abilities are just a secondary usage of abilities originally intended for helicopters?

ha, now I can't wait to see my helicopters fly through a mountain tunnel. Good thing there aren't animations for that after all. :)

I know some here must be as old as me so here you go

Having them embark onto ocean tiles would be neat but it might be a bit strange that there would be situations where using a harbor to embark would actually be quicker than "wading" onto the coast, having to wait a turn at the coast/ocean boundary (due to not enough movement), embark onto the ocean tiles (using all MPs again) and then finally being able to traverse the ocean normally.

Using a harbor/city center would save them an entire turn worth of movement.

Agree. They shouldn't get the full movement penalty when embarking. Ideally, they should transform into an amphibious assault ship when embarking at the coast/ocean boundary, but that's probably asking to much.
