GeneralMatt's Creation Thread

Actually Woodelf saw my signature and offered to do some animations for me, maybe I can convince him to do some. If not I will try the Helgoland.

And I still need to ask someone to do textures for me, it keeps blowing my mind..

I still need a lot of work on my own textures, there's always something I don't like about each one, but I'm just picky. :nuke: But I love these tutorials and refer to them on a daily basis. For just about anything you need. If you want any tips or help I'm here. :p

Thank you! The hard part I find is that ships generally have a lot more "little" things than a aeroplane do. All sorts of stuff that especially on older predreadnoughts mainly, I have no idea what to put there..

Yeah, ships and airplanes are different, but I think those tutorials can still help with anyone trying to improve their textures. :) The main goal is, in the end, to make it look realistic, good looking, and stylized. :hmm: I'm still working on the realistic and styling part. ;) Thanks to asio for guiding me to those by the way.

Apparently Mr. Lejczak does ships too!

Click the "how this model was made" link at the bottom, maybe you'll get some ideas. Looks to me he used the same method I use for airplanes. Create a bump map from diagrams, then make all the colors, then paste the bump map again, then make it a little less noticeable, details then, etc. :)

Ahh, thank you! I am looking forward to this.

I think asio pointed me to this site once a while back, I must have forgotten to bookmark it..

Probably just about ready for release by now, eh? (Hehe... just kidding Matt... I know where you're at, but can't wait to start seeing the previews!).

Sorry, heh, got caught up in something else. Just starting now. :(

Well, as long as you get the model finished tonight before you get to bed, all is forgiven!

Hehe... just kidding...

Found some more USS Iowa pictures for you with some interesting angles for detail.

Hope they help.

Those will help a HUGE amount, thanks!

Here she is so far. Though I do need to "retire" for the night. :p

Hmmm... hard to tell from your picture, but something seems amis... the side turrets should be just a little behind each funnel... the front one seems correct in your model, but the other seems too far aft... either the funnels aren't right, the side turrets aren't right or the hull and/or superstructure is too long.

Anyways, hope the new pictures of the USS Iowa model helps.

Yes, they did. I fixed the side turrets up some, but then I went to bed. I am working on it at the moment, so I hope to get the model finished soon.

Well, I dunno if that was still a work in project on secondary turret placement, but there still seems to be way too much space between the two side turrets... they should be closer together. I think the model as a whole might be too long.

You might also want to take another look at the flag bridge up-front, based on the model pic... take a good look at hull length, spacing between the secondary turrets and the shape of the bridge.

Yes will do. Until you posted the images I had a hard time picturing the bridge. I will go over that area again.

The bow/nose of the dreadnought points forward more too then in your model... see the plastic model pic.

This sketch should help too...

After you said to not use that one set, I redid it, here.

That looks a LOT better Matt... but remember what I said in a PM concerning the higher foredeck and the lower aftdeck. The "high" deck terminates at the rear edge of the aft secondary gun, as can clearly be seen in the B/W photo in post #274 (the ship is sailing to the top-left of the photo... the stern is in the bottom-right).

Oh... are you going to render the two cranes? They come now or later?

Yah, just post to that render I got the two decks figured. The cranes will come in a bit. I will add them next actually.
