GeneralMatt's Creation Thread

Ooops, I am tired I guess

Ok-ey, do-key, I was wondering about that, but never did do it..
I already have pretty much all the texture together, think she will look cool in the end..

Oh yes, what exact shade should the deck be? I was thinking a yellowish colour..

I like this pic...

And you should definately check out this pic for the deck...

Ok, thank you. Kind of hard to tell on the first one, but no probs on the 2nd. ;)

That first pic is for the overall look... I know some pics don't show all the markings, but the majority of pics I've seen seem to show two (red) colored rings around each of the two funnels.

This ACTUAL PHOTO shows lifeboats, rings around the stacks and you can see many of the secondary battery guns too.

Maybe you should stick a flag on the back too (team color or Imperial German?). Nah.

Ah, I see, I found one also of a model of it to help. Though I am getting really sleepy eyed and might have to finish this tomorrow (get better results probbaly too..)

Thank you for all your help. :) If I do decide to hit the sack, I will post a image first..

You know, Thomas Edison survived on cat-naps... he never slept and worked all night!

What a guy! :crazyeye:

Yeah, well you know, if you are making a comparison.. :p I am not that "great". Besides, I bet he did not have a very physically active day preciously, get a bit of sleep, wake up early, shovel snow for an hour, skate for half an hour, shovel more snow, and then spend part of a afternoon preparing food for dinner guests of the family. ;)

And I would love to take a catnap, but I would not wake up till morning.. But I will go as long as possible. :)

Do you know what they would carry on the roof of the different structures?

Ok, I have officially had it for the day, night world. :) I will leave with this, and I will try as hard as possible to finish up on the morrow..

All the funny colour parts are the un-mapped parts so no wories.

Looking good from what I can tell...

Hard to comment accurately when I know a lot is not done...

1) I'd ditch those 45-degree angled slashes on the side of the hull... I know you got those from that colored schematic that you used to texture it, but in all the actual photos I don't see anything that stands-out that much on the side of the ship that looks anything like that (look over the actual photos... I don't see those slash marks).

2) Smokestacks... I'd definately lighten the three dark-grey thin-rings below the red rings on each stack... once again, looking at the actual photos, those rings are barely noticeable, but the dark grey ones on your model stand-out too much... I think those three below need to be lightened to barely darker then the main grey color scheme. Also... not sure if you're finished with the red stripes on the smokestacks, but I think they should be dulled/darkened a tad... a bit too bright I think. I think you could get-away with doing almost the same color red on the stacks as the red painted on keel/bottom of the ship. Looking at photos and that little painting I posted a few spots up, it would seem the red on the stacks is nearly as dull/dark as the underwater red color.

3) Secondary battery... I can clearly see 10 secondary guns (all eight 4" and two 15pndrs). There should be four 15pndrs on top of the superstructure between the two rear big turrets, but that's one of those goofy-looking areas of your ship (unmapped) so not sure if you have them there or not.

4) Lifeboats pending I take it? Can't tell in the unmapped area.

Overall EXCELLENT work as always GM... Can't wait to see if she launches tomorrow. I feel like a kid trying to sleep on Christmas eve... you've left me hanging dreaming of Colonial German fleets sailing the late 19th century waves!

If I could offer some comments, smooth out the front of the bow, and the two overhangs to either side of the ship on both sides of the forward turret. Also, on the texture I would match the rings around the stacks better- you can see the seams in the UV map from one section and the other. Other than that, nice start!

Another thought here... I don't know if it's the angle, or if there's any differance at all or not in your model...

The secondary battery of guns come in two gauges... 4.1" and 15pndrs. The 15pndrs are actually 3.4" in diameter (smaller then the 4.1" battery). I'm not sure what you're doing in 3D scaling, if you made all the secondary guns the same size or not (at that scale it's not much of a size differance), but on the chance you did make some guns smaller/bigger then others in the secondary battery make sure the 4.1" battery (the row of four "broadside" guns on each side of the ship) is the bigger of the two. From the picture above, it looks like the two 15pndrs in the forward-firing guns look bigger then the 4.1" battery guns... that may be an optical illusion from the angle of the picture, I don't know... but I'm sure you know which guns are bigger and which guns aren't (or if they're all the same size) in your model.

If they're all the same size (due to the small scale), I'm cool with that too (not a huge differance between 4.1" and 3.4", especially at that scale), but if you DID go to the trouble of making one secondary gun bigger then the other, make sure the biggest secondary guns are the 4.1" broadside battery... or, just have them all the same size... at that scale it probably doesn't matter. Maybe it's my old eyes, or the angle playing tricks on me, but the broadside secondary guns seem smaller then the forward firing secondary gun.

Oh wait... you're Canadian... you use metric (like everybody but us Americans) don't you? The 4.1" Broadside battery is 105mm and the 15pndrs are 88mm. :p

Thanks for all the thoughts and colour stuff. I will take them into account! Unfortunately I did not specifically make some of the secondary guns bigger/smaller, it would be way to hard to see it ingame anyways.

Smitty, yeah, the UV mapping was a bit off, I fixed that. The texture has two separate stacks, and on the back stack I had the fromnt bit you see using the wrong one.
I should do the smoothing on the bow and front hangover parts. At the time I did not want to do too many polygons so it got kind of squarish.

Here is a fully UV mapped image.

And here is a version with the changes suggested by you tow. :)

Matt... I wasn't saying you should have differant sized secondary guns... I know at that scale it's almost impossible to tell... from the angle, it looked like they may have been differant sized... guess it was just an optical illusion... I'm perfectly fine with them all being the same size at that scale.

I look forward to this model, most definately!

P.S.
Smokestacks & hull look much better!

Take a look, I posted a new image! I new you would not mind the sizes, just thought I should tell ya. :p And the may not be the same size, I just did not measure them vs each other..

Somethings not right with those lifeboats... they seem more like Oxford University racing boats (too long and too thin).

Take a look at these pictures... looks like there's at least two nose-to-stern lifeboats over the 4.1" gun battery, not one long skinny one.

I don't think the one up by the smokestacks is that long either.

Ah, yes, ok, that will be solved. Other than that, what do you think?

The Brandenburg itself is looking pretty-darn sweet Matt... I'm really digging it! I think if you just fatten-up and shorten the lifeboats and get them more like the picture you should be good... speaking of which, the lifeboats on the stern may be the right length, but they-too look too thin.

A little work on the lifeboats and I think you'll have a game winner here (well, until the real dreadnoughts show up).

It may not be 100% accurate, but I think if you make ONE SIZE of lifeboats, and put three up front and two in back, that might do it... two nose-to-stern over the broadside batter, one up by the smokestacks (centered between the two, not as far forward as it is now) and one on stern for each side of the ship, there's your eight boats.
