My first post in this forum. I have two questions :
- what is the advantage to attach a general to a single unit ? What does it bring ?
- how does the inflation work ? Is there some way to avoid it ? Is there more inflation when there are colonial expenses ?

The advantage of attaching a Great General to a single unit is that this single unit will get the full +20xp from the GG. Attaching a GG to a unit in a group instead spreads this xp among all the units in the group, so every individual unit gets less xp. The GG itself only attaches itself to one unit regardless, so only that one unit gets access to the GG exclusive promotions and free upgrade. Both have their uses - single units are generally promoted Combat I -> Medic I+II+III (-> Morale for +1 Movement, if possible) to create a Great Medic, whereas a small group of units can be spread enough xp to bring all of them up a level so they all can get another promotion.

Inflation I'm not sure. I never pay attention to it, as far as I know it's purely based on the amount of turns that have passed. I do know there's no way to reduce it, barring one rare random event.

That is correct, there's no way of reducing inflation outside of that one random event. But while you can't do anything to the percentage, if you reduce your base costs you obviously also reduce the inflation cost. So in that sense colonial expenses do matter.
