Genetic Engineering ?

Do you think genetic engineering on humans is a good idea? will it be abused? will a race of super rich genetic super-men rule the world. Do you think its a good idea ?

I don't believe in engineering people at birth. Let people be people.

Don't use this technology for petty things like cosmetics, use it for something useful, like growing more crops per square acre, being able to generate organs in high demand, and eliminate diseases.

Wow, I agree with you Sharpe. Having become heavily involved in the research end of the field, I can say that modifying a child at birth could very well screw up the species. However, I completely agree with refined farming techniques (not just genetic), and organ growth in vats rather than people.

I think genetic engineering would be a major boon to society, sure the socio-ethical mumbo-jumbo will come up with the roits and the protests and the jealousy of the gentically inferior.......................yada yada yada, but the ability to dramatically increase the scientific frontiers would be so great that it would outwiegh the downsides, the only problems that could come up would be lack of variation that could cause problems with illnesses, but by that time our biological knowledge would have increased to such a degree that we probobly would be safe.

Working on genetics is working on the very fabric of life. I accept it only as a means to cure genetical diseases. Trying to "improve", "enhance" or to toy with it is highly unethical.
Unless we got the wisdom of Gods, which the companies that develop these genetics tools certainly don't have, we would better not to f*ck up with the basis of life, which is really the thing we should value.

It may help some diseases, though not all, and it may help us grow more crops to help feed people, but I doubt we'll get so far along as to make genetically engineered humans past a few possible physical changes as needed medically.

On the other hand this could be the chance to breed the superhuman who is able to implement true Socialism.

What if we enhance the brain wouldn't the intellectual progress be outstanding, imagine a billion people with intelligence greater than Hawking and Einstien and other great minds, the wonders we could uncover the buety we could create, it would be amazing.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the risks, sure humanity will have the problem with the elitist split and that is one of the biggest problems. Hopefully automaion will have increased so wealth is no longer a huge issue, if it doesn't we may have a large problem on our hands

Seriously, I have more concerns than whether some people in the future abuse the wonders of genetics. Look at how much good has come from Nuclear Engineering. Can you imagine our lives without it?

Genetic Engineering may be our only hope to colonise new planets, or new portions of this planet.

However, you shouldn't be able to design your baby, people can design their 'dream' homes at the moment and still get sick of them after a while.
