One of the most interesting feature I found from the Gathering Storm is the ability to guess which civilization is in the game by seeing a river name. So it's not a randomized name taken from a pool like the continent name. Let this be a thread to collect all the names found from the screenshots, live-streams, etc as the game periodically revealed. Who knows, we might deduct a new civilization or any other valuable stuffs from here!

Spoiler Source :

"As we added more significance to these geographic features, we thought there should be a way to identify them. This inspired the addition of named features. So every time a new feature – river, volcano, mountain range, or desert – is discovered, it is named after the discovering civ. Now if Egypt starts on a River, that waterway will officially be designated as the Nile River. Of course, this gets tricky when a civ like the Netherlands discovers a Volcano – in that case, it will be named for a civ that isn’t in the current game. It ends up becoming an interesting geographic trivia game while you play. And the better you are with river and mountain names the more clues you get about which other civs may be present in this particular Civilization world."

Amur River might be Mongolian too. They were sort of like the meat in the sandwich between China and Russia.

I was a bit surprised when I saw Indus river. I cant imagine anyone discovered it before England, so does that mean England only has one river name or does it also count the Empire's (Victoria) rivers? :p

Haha. Oh god. That would be so controversial it can't possibly be true... can it? :shifty:

We have many great rivers in this green and pleasant land (quite a few of them prone to flooding, too!) Hopefully there's more than just the Thames! I'm hopeful as I recall seeing an article yesterday (might have been Polygon?) in which they talked about a river near France being called the Loire, the Seine (I recall because they misspelled it!) or the Rhône...

I wonder if the Netherlands would get the difference branches of the Rhine/Rijn... IJssel, Lek, Nederrijn, Waal, there's a lot of them. And of course we have the Maas, Schelde and arguably Vecht and Eems as rivers that aren't branches of the Rhine (though Eems is mostly German, only with it's mouth being the Dutch-German border, and Schelde only flows a few kilometers through the Netherlands before reaching the sea).

Very interesting feature indeed.

If I had to predict anything, it'd be that Norway will most likely have Glomma as a possible river name, since it's our longest river. Maybe Nidelva, too, as it flows through Norway's capital in the game, Nidaros - or, today, Trondheim. And we have more than enough mountains to take names from, too.

Good catch! It was a turn 0 game and the only civilizations around England was Zulu and China.
Neither seems more likely to saw a river and name it Indus so...

...but then there's this Okavango river.

In the other thread, people are discussing which 3 other civilization that is modified aside of England, Zulu, China, Indonesia and (Russia).
From the feature label, I think the contenders are:

1. Korea (due to the Paektu volcano - unless there's a civilization that have no volcano at all)
2. Arabia (due to Amir mountain ranges - unless there's a civilization that have no mountain range at all that probably also named Balkan mountain)
3. Persia (due to Dasht-e Kavir desert - unless there's a civilization that have no desert at all)
4. Kongo (due to Okavango river - unless there's a civilization that have no river at all, which also give Indus name at turn 0 ///unlikely)

I hope the Chinese rivers include Yangtze and Huang He.....

Apologies if I'm misinterpreting something, but my understanding was that the extra names are taken from Civs that aren't on the map - so by that logic Korea, Arabia, Persia and Kongo were not in the livestream game, implying that they haven't had any changes.

Side note: how do you think they’ll handle labeling the various branches of rivers? Will we get unique feature names for each branch, or call the whole river system the same river?

Are the Ohio and Missouri rivers really just the Mississippi?

They are tributaries. With greatly different sources.

Being said, I suspect in the game, one label will do for the whole system.

And who would get the name for rivers through multiple countries like the Danube? I am expecting Danube to go to the new civ of Hungary.

Once the game is released, we should be able to see the text file with all the names in it.

I'm not quite sure as well. However I saw your post in bite's thread about how England does not have volcanos or deserts.

That should explains why Vc Paektu and Dasht-e Kavir is in.. they took it from Korea and Persia which isn't in the game. The same goes with Mt Asir - probably Firaxis doesn't thought your suggested Pennines a mountain range and borrow Arabia's.

It still doesn't solve Okavango, regrettably. Unless Thames is the only river in England's label list and Indus is India's. Kinda disappointing.

Maybe it's still WIP, and the AI is randomly labelling the places. As the gameplay already started with the Thames labelled, I think they rename (I suppose that will be possible) the river from it's former name to Thames to show us basically how the system would work. At least, this is what I hope...

It would be great if forests, rainforests, marshes, and small islands had names.

Yes. But I suspect the coding might become unnecessarily dense if they start naming every little bit of the map.
