how do you go from the old to the new world and keep your empire growing and generating profit?

I manage to be the first civ there, got some naval units, settles, workers, missionaries and lots-lots of military (this barbarians are tough!). It has been very very expensive, and of course, the new cities are expensive, slow.... I only have like 450 turns to go (ive got the feeling im running out of time) and with some buildings requiring up to 90 turns, it seems like nonsense to continue, but for the sake of the empire I have founded/acquired like 8 new cities.

is it a good idea to get the new world for myself? or is it better just to crush everybody in the oldworld?

State property is the best way, but you don't get communism until really late into the game.

If you're big on expansion, you'll want the organized trait on your leader. Try settling your new cities next to commerce-intensive resources and building more courthouses.

Forbidden palace. If you have universal sufferage, you might consider buying the courthouse and then the forbidden palace. If you have slavery and enough pop in one of the formerly barbarian cities, you might consider whipping one of them.
