Okay, so I thought I was pretty good at CIV,
but now I realize I'm probably not, so I seek your assistance :)
I am Ghandi, and just entered the industrial era, the rest of the Civs are a bit behind.
I am on a continent by myself, and have cities covering the whole thing. The question is: What now? to expand my two options are through culture or war. I have almost all of the world wonders, and get a bunch of great people, so my culture is pretty booming.
I guess either way I should prepare for war if I start turning peoples cities into mine. I have one island that has a barb city, one montezuma city and one mansa musa city. And I just got a settler in there. Should I pursue the culture aspect or the warmongerer aspect? (I have almost no units, but if I chose to make them, they would be a good deal higher than everone elses, so I could make a mean army (even though I'm ghandi :p)
Thanks,
This post was kind of a mix of a bunch of questions, sorry if it's not clear.
Seth

my suggestion is to give screenshots and/or (preferly both) Save so we have more than a snowballs chance in hell to answer it :p

My suggestion is to write Gandhi the way it's supposed to be written. It's not just you, but it seems like half of the people on this forum don't know the correct way to write down his name.

I do realize that the name is pronounced in a way that apparently makes a lot of people think that the h is right after the G but it's not.

This is all. Grammar police out.

As far as the game goes; Post a starting save, post screenshots, play short segments based on advice and there you have it - tried and true.

Really? Gandhi? alright.
I posting this as a test as I don't know (didn't before) how to post saves. If this works I'll get a save at the beginning and post it.
Seth
PS: I assume I can take screenshots somehow in the options or something? (never done that either).

i recommend getting BTS

I have it, I was just playing warlords because it is only my second game back after a break, last game was Vanilla, next should be BTS.

So apparently, I'm pretty bad at this sortof thing... is there a way to restart your game if you didn't save it at the beginning?
Anyway, here is may current saved game.

Perhaps the half of the people on the forum are right. Perhaps G's parents had literacy troubles and didn't spell his name correctly.

Perhaps they were like a small minority of the parents of today's generation who have found it fashionable to change the spelling of names with minor tweaks.

Or, perhaps his parents named him like half of the people on the forum believe and G himself spelled it incorrectly.

Or even, since, as you say, the apparently proper pronunciation doesn't follow the apparently proper spelling, then those who transliterated his name from his native tongue into English made a mistake. Certainly, there is enough historical precedent of names being changed in this manner--a good portion of North American last names fit into such a category.

All of that said, who am I to even propose the possibility of such thought-provoking ideas? I'm just a Nobody on the internet.

Then again, everyone knows that Nobody's perfect. :D

Well no. Gandhi is quite a common name in India and it's always spelt "Gandhi" not "Ghandi". It's an interesting quirk that some people seem to have special problems with names with an "h" in them Genghis Khan and Buddha are examples though with the former there are several accepted spellings so it's probably not that big a deal. With Gandhi though there is only one accepted spelling which happens to be pretty logical given the way the name is pronounced.

I am certain that these facts are true after the great G himself lived. But was it always the case?

Particularly, your claim about "only one accepted spelling" makes it seem that this strictness is due to the historical contributions of the great G. For example, if you can confirm that there are multiple ways of spelling other Indian names, then that fact adds credibility to this claim about the spelling of G's name being "the only way" due mostly to the great G's influence, and not necessarily due to the origination of the name itself.

only one accepted spelling which happens to be pretty logical given the way the name is pronounced.
Perhaps half of the forum members are pronouncing it incorrectly then, since it seems so logical to them that the misspelling looks correct, while it seems so logical to you that the opposite is true.

From my, admittedly limited, understanding of Indian languages, there exist both the "G" and "Gh" Gutteral Consonants. It could be that half of the forum members are using the pronunciation of the wrong Gutteral Consonant.

There is certainly a reasonable number of Indian Surnames which begin with either "Gha" or have "gha" as the start of the second syllable in them.

Perhaps you can give us what you use as the pronunciation of the great G's name, which, as you claim, would make it logically easier to remember the correct spelling.

If you choose to go for a Cultural game, then you will likely be quite fine with just your own continent. Try not to start wars, but be willing to join in on a war if it is against an AI that most AIs dislike. By "dislike" I mean where most AIs are Cautious, Annoyed, or Furious with said AI--when an AI has one of those attitudes to the AI that you declare war on, you will not get a negative Diplo hit with the AI that dislikes the war target.

Since you are technologically advanced, you can easily shut down all research. Try to get as close as possible to running 100% Culture, with the remainder of your Commerce Slider being set to produing Gold. So, say, you might have 70% Culture and 30% Gold, with 0% Science.

Also, since you likely already know Scientific Method and cannot build Monastaries, I suggest that you switch into the Organized Religion Civic, so that your Cities can build Missionaries. Build Missionaries in many of your Cities and spread them around. Then, build Temples in your Cities, so that you can build Cathedrals in your three Legendary-to-be Cities.

The Map Size will determine how many Temples you will need to build of each Religion before you are allowed to build Cathedrals. I believe that the numbers are roughly:
3 Temples all of the same Religion to unlock the Cathedral for that Religion for a Standard-sized map
4 such Temples for a Huge-sized map
2 such Temples for a Small-sized map

Your goal will be to build a lot of Cathedrals and other Culture-producing buildings, such as Theatres, in your 3 chosen Legendary-to-be Cities.

If you have two Cities with a lot of Food, then you can strongly consider switching into Caste System when you switch into Organized Religion. Then, be sure to hire a lot of Artist Specialists in your Food-heavy Cities. You will be trying to generate Great Arists, who can be either settled or can "Create a Great Works" in one of your three Legendary-to-be Cities.

Other Cities, which are not your 3 chosen Legendary-to-be when they are done with building Missionaries and Temples, can build Wealth.

As far as choosing the 3 Legendary-to-be Cities, that's up to you, but some general guidelines are:
a) Cities with a lot of World Wonders can work well
b) Cities with a lot of matured Cottages can work well

If you have a lot of such Cities, then you can differentiate the better ones as being those that also have some surplus Food from Food-based Resources AND have some reasonable production (12 base Hammers or more).

As far as Diplomacy goes, figure out who is whose Worst Enemy. Generally, if AI #1 treats at least one other AI with an Annoyed or Furious Attitude (check the F4 screen and look at the GLANCE tab), then AI #1 will have a Worst Enemy.

Decide which AIs are the most disliked in the world (if you have 6 AI opponents, then you'll probably pick two AIs). Treat those AIs as YOUR enemies and try not to give into their requests.

For all of the other AIs, do your best to give into their requests. If they ask you to switch Civics or Religions, you can strongly consider the idea, as you can switch back again 5 turns later without an Anarchy cost, as you are a Spiritual Leader. If they ask for a tech, give it to them. If they ask for a small sum of Gold, give it to them. If they ask you to stop trading with one of the AIs that you have decided is one of YOUR enemies, then you should strongly consider agreeing to do so. Basically, be as nice as you possibly can to the AIs that you are not treating as YOUR enemies.

This way, you will have AI help if you get dragged into a war, while you will only have a few enemies, so the whole world won't be against you in a war.

check the F4 screen and look at the GLANCE tab
Hmmm, if you aren't using a Mod, but are just playing the out-of-the-box game with the latest patches applied, you will not have the GLANCE tab in Warlords.

In your game, there are a ton of negative Diplo penalities for having traded with AIs' Worst Enemies. As a result, the diplomatic situation is a bit of a mess.

Having access to the GLANCE tab of the F4 screen will give you immense power, as that screen summarizes a lot of the key diplomacy information that you have to really dig to find otherwise. For example, without this GLANCE tab, you will have to ask each individual AI how they feel about each of the other AIs using the "Let's discuss something else..." and then "What do you think of..." and then picking another Leader's name method. You can get most of the same information through the menu system, but trust me, doing so can get very tedious, very quickly.

As a result, you will probably want to play using the Hall of Fame Mod for Warlords.

Doing so will allow you to better understand the Diplomacy situation, which also means that you will be more likely to have Open Borders with more than just a single AI or two and that you'll actually get more than 2 Religions, since Religions spread a whole lot better when you have Open Borders with an AI that has that Religion and also have Cities of yours that have zero Religions in them.

So, I would suggest that you download and play your games using the Hall of Fame Mod for Warlords. At the top of that webpage are installation instructions. There are also setup instructions that let the Mod load every time that you play a game.

You will have to start a new game to play using the Mod. It is also a very-well play-tested Mod and is used by many members on this forum, so you can trust that it is not laiden with viruses or trojans.

Yes and the name Gandhi is clearly spelt with the G consonant which has a different letter in the Devnagari script to the Gh consonant. Now Gujarati has a different script but I would bet it's the same there as well. And after all Gandhi wrote extensively in English and always spelt his name as Gandhi so there is no ambiguity in his particular case. It's always been Gandhi.

I didn't know trojans were in this game... :p
Thanks to dhoomstriker for some good advice, My capital has hit legendary status.
Hmm, I must be a real newbie, I don't even play for the victory conditions, I just stay ahead in points and if someone gets to close I try to bring war to him. It's worked thus far, but I'm assuming not for higher level difficulties.
Culture sound like just my thing. I think I'll try Organized religion, Free speech and Caste system, then switch org religion for pacifism to get me some super artists. Sound good?

PS: To load a mod, do I save the download and then access it the game menu where it says "load a mod"?
(I'm new... :) )
Seth
PPS: I could go space race, but something about it isn't fun to me... the culture looks to be more likely. But it is my second best option.

Nice discussion, but the leader in the game is called Gandhi. So Gandhi is correct regardless of Indian grammar

OT: With what you describe, you can easily pick and chose how to win. It is good to have a plan though.

Generally, in a Cultural game, you will stop research BEFORE learning Scientific Method. That way, you can still build Monasteries. Monasteries give you extra Cultural output and they also allow you to build Missionaries while running a Religious Civic OTHER then Organized Religion.

So, yes, once you've spread your Religions around to at least 9 of your Cities, you can certainly switch back into Pacifism. Or, if you managed to build Monasteries BEFORE you learned Scientific Method, then the Monasteries will still allow you to build Missionaries of the same Religion from the Cities in which you built the Monasteries. So, that possibily may also allow you to switch back into Pacifism sooner, if you don't mind only being able to build Missionaries from the few (if any) Cities that already have built Monasteries.

And yes, that plan sounds good, with the only sticky point being the timing of when you switch out of Organized Religion and into Pacifism.

Precisely. Also, if you read the instructions at the top of the page that I linked for the Mod, it tells you how to set up your Civ 4 Warlords "Windows shortcut" so that the Mod will automatically load when the game starts.

You'll have to finish your current game without the Mod, since a game played using a Mod will need to be continued using that Mod, while a game without using a Mod will need to be continued without using a Mod. However, I highly recommend the Hall of Fame Mod for all of your future games--I always run it for my Warlords games.

PPS: I could go space race, but something about it isn't fun to me... the culture looks to be more likely. But it is my second best option.
Space is a lot better when you have cultivated some allies and some enemies. That way, you'll still be able to trade some late-game techs, to help speed your way to learning nearly the entire tech tree. In your game, most of the AIs hate you because you traded with nearly anyone and everyone, so you won't have a lot of tech-trading partners. Ultimately, that situation means that going for a Space Victory in that game of yours is going to be a lot harder than on average.

An important diplomatic policy, as I mentioned, is to try to avoid trading with the Worst Enemies of the AIs that you are trying to stay on good terms with. Once you play a game with the Mod, you can use the F4 -> GLANCE screen to greatly help you keep on top of who likes whom and who hates whom, making this task infinitely easier.

Ok, I have two cities to legendary culture, the other is 9,000 out of 50,000, but it doesn't look like the meter is going up any.
I guess I should just do everything to bump up its culture gain? It's year 1902 I think, and I am still not in a war, and no one who declares war on me will have a good time doing it as I am only adjacent to montezuma who has a good standing w. me.
Any suggestions? (I guess any great artists should give the culture boom to my city).
I will post a save as soon as I can.

Set up a city to run as many artists as possible. As high food output as you can possibly make. Run caste system to enable unlimited artists. Give it National Epic if possible. Then use the great artists it produces to culture bomb the last legendary city.

Get the last legendary city to produce as much commerce as possible. Build buildings that give percentage bonuses to culture (cathedrals, hermitage), or just plain build culture.
Run the slider at 100% culture. Build wealth in as many other cities you need to sustain 100% culture. Make sure to run Free Speech for +100% culture.

Do not ignore Montezuma, unless he is friendly. He will happily declare war at pleased since he is a maniac.

I've got a decent army, especially considering that alot of the time I can only build units :P
