Giant Death Robots With Atomic Bombs

Request for Narrative/Rule Suggestions

Note: I also posted Update #11 earlier this evening. That update appears on the prior page .

●●●●●Summary●●●●●
Please describe a random event and contribute a self-imposed rule for me to follow. The rule should make it more likely that Venice will eventually get nukes/giant robots without reducing my current empire or weakening my military. If you describe an event, I will include it in this narrative. FOR EXAMPLE: "An influential anti-war politician has obtained an insurmountable level of popularity with the American people. Declaring war will be politically impossible while this candidate is still alive and active (50 turns)."

●●●●●General Thoughts●●●●●
If you have read the update that I posted this evening, you know that my conquest of the Ottoman Empire was disappointingly easy. Laughably easy victories do not make for good narratives. Also, the title of this thread is “Giant Death Robots and Atomic Bombs.” I had hoped to actually fight Giant Death Robots with my own Giant Death Robots at some point.

Therefore, my goal is to ensure that Venice gets nukes, Giant Death robots, and a sizable military before I go to war with them.

Obviously, I could just wait for Venice to get Robots/Nukes and then pounce whenever I see a robot. But that feels a lot like a cat playing with a mouse before killing it. The cat is always in control, and can kill the mouse whenever it feels like it. To make an interesting story, there needs to be a real risk of loss. Therefore, to increase the difficulty and to give Venice a fair chance, I would like to create one or more self-imposed rules that I must follow. Even if following those rules allows Venice to defeat me.

At first I had thought about unilaterally declaring that the American anti-war movement had gained widespread popularity, and that declaring war would be impossible for 50 turns. It’s a good idea, and it accomplishes all of my objectives. But then I remembered that there are a lot of very creative people on the forums who have given me some great advice in the past. So now I’m asking you for suggestions.

●●●●●Specific Guidelines●●●●●
  • This isn’t a formal process at all. You can post whatever you like in whatever format you like and I will try to take what I can from it. I’m just posting these bullet points to clarify what I’m looking for.
  • The most useful suggestions will include both 1) a brief narrative description of the event or situation, and 2) the specific self-imposed rule for me to follow.
  • Consider having your suggestion expire after a specified numbers of turns (e.g. you are unable to declare war, but this restriction expires after 50 turns). The more restrictive the suggestion, the fewer number of turns it should be active.
  • I will attempt to incorporate every suggestion offered if I think it is feasible to implement. I might modify some suggestions if it makes for a better story, or make the game more playable, etc.
  • I reserve the right to modify or veto a suggestion as I see fit. However, once I accept the suggestion I must follow the rule as written.
  • The goal is to protect Venice for a time and to help it become a credible threat. The goal is not to needlessly weaken me. I would prefer suggestions that do not force me to give away my cities or limit the size of my military.

Do you ever post your games online? I would enjoy learning more.

In fact I have, your threads inspired me to try and I have started one called 08/15 Adventures of Gunner Yossarian, or Assyria Deity conquest of Europe. I am looking forward to more feedback.

Nice! Wow, and it just started - looks like I couldn't have timed that question any better. I will look forward to reading it this evening.

This whole thread is probably one of the most fantastic things I have ever read. Really digging the writing style, absolutely hilarious and informative at the same time.

I'm gonna try to do a thread like this if I ever have the creativity and time. In the meantime here's a rule that will ultimately give venice some robots of there own. (Gonna try to write here)

After the obliteration of the Ottoman empire, word has finally gotten out about america's giant liberation robots. The American people have instantly fallen for these lovable 15 meter high scamps and a giant robot craze has begun. Coorporations gobble this up and are selling toys, posters, and and clothes based on these bringers of freedom. Additionally, our allies have also contracted us to build them there own robots. Newely elected president George W. "Dubya" Bush plans to "give" them to our allies just as we did the atomic bomb but his secretary of the treasury (merchant of venice) persuades him otherwise saying "You Americans will get what you deserve."

RULE: all production in all cties with more than 5 population must change to giant death robots. Additionally, all city states must be gifted at least one starting with those in "China" (to let Venice have access to taking them or because of America's debt to China). If there's not enough uranium then filling up the "Chinese" city states with them is fine. No wars can be started until the giant robot craze ends (production finished or all city states have a robot) as all giant war infantry have been contracted to do light shows for the public (touring with the new music sensation sweedish house mafia that has hit america by storm).

Hope this helps, I'm not sure if there's enough uranium to do this but it was worth a shot.

President Lancelot MCXXIIVMCMMIXCIII is caught receiving a glowjob from a bintern. A glowjob, of course, is what happens when you are painted with glow-in-the-dark paints. Highly illegal and immoral!

Fig 1. A glowjob. The boy in that picture was rightfully executed shortly after.

What's that?

What's a bintern...? are you serious? Everyone knows what a bintern is:

Fig 2. Anthromorphic, talking sentient creatures with an insatiable appetite for trash - the modern day bintern.

Rule: He orders Guided Missile strikes on random enemy (viz, non-American) cities every turn for the next 20 turns. America may not invade foreign lands or capture foreign cities, but may defend their own territories while Operation Wag the Dog is in effect. Every civ still in the game must receive at least one Guided Missile strike. CSes are exempted.

 Perfect. I will use it.

To everyone else: There is no limit to the number of rules that I can be under. Please continue to post suggestions if you have them.

EDIT: Oops, I missed that there were two posts. The " Perfect I will use it" applies equally to both (both were quite funny and very well thought out), though I may make a minor technical adjustment to the rules to allow for enough cruise missiles to be produced with the Giant Robots.

Also, MACK, I appreciate your kind words a lot. They are very encouraging.

Rule [As if you needed more of 'em!]: The Great Cartographer I. Aminept has spilled coffee on one of his maps. While drying it, he has noticed that Arabia has a settlement in Alaska. This clearly cannot be allowed! If all of Alaska is not under Swed - er, American, control, think of the horrors that could occur when cable channels try to film inane reality TV programs there! President Lancelot MCXXIIVMCMMIXCIII has agreed that, after Operation Wag the Dog has ceased, Operation Enduring Alaskan Reality TV Freedom Thing of Science tm must commence to Free Alaska From Tyranny Or Something Like That tm.
In other words, capture the Arabian city.

Great update. I laughed when it said, 'Then you see this', and the atomic bomb hit Istanbul.

Fair warning: this is a tough one, and if you're under other rules, this may be inadvisable.
A wave of American nationality has hit Sweden recently with the swift Ottoman conquests, but Camelot is increasingly being viewed as a relic of the past, and unamerican. Under influence from several opinion editorials from public relations advisor redwings1340, Washington DC is being increasingly seen as the true Capital of America. The public is demanding the government move to the true capital of Washington DC, where it can rule the world from.

Public Demands (not rules, the government can ignore the public if they wish, and see below if you decide to): Sell off all your cities in Africa to any civilization you want, sell your defensive buildings in Camelot, and let Venice take Camelot through war. Sell whatever other cities you need to make Washington DC your capital. Bonus points if you can get Washington DC to become the largest city in the world.

Rule: Until Washington DC becomes your capital or you actively start a plan to make DC your capital, you may not increase your empire's happiness by starting the construction of or buying any buildings that directly or indirectly produce happiness (such as through social policies + happiness for the building), or take any social policies that increase happiness. If you make DC your capital, this rule no longer applies as long as DC is your capital, but does restart if another city becomes your capital.

EDIT: wow, apparently my bronydom is showing through here, lol. Oops. In my original post I wrote Canterlot instead of Camelot... I also have edited this post way too many times...

I'm the dean of Oxford University yay :D
Ok I have 2 rule/suggestions:

1. After the war against the Ottomans (Ottomen?) and all of the merciless killing of soldiers, a wave of enlightenment has come over the Swedican people. They have been thinking about the value of human life and stuff, and about all of Amereden's conquering. This rapidly growing movement has decided that war is wrog, and there should be peace. They will not elect a leader (over 50% of the population by now) unless they swear to not declare war on anyone or conquer anyone if war is declared on them. (For the next 20 turns, can't DOW, and if DOWed on can only defend your territory, no attacking into enemy territory or cities.)

2. A Cold War has broken out between Swemerica and Venice. At this point, world war between the two major powers seems inevitable. The smaller nations of the world are worried. They have decided they can only survive by standing together. Thy like Venice better, so if there is a War between the United Sweden of America and Venice, all of the nations will stand with Venice to try to win and survive. This pact will last for 20 years. (If you attack Venice or are attacked by Venice in the next 40 turns, you must also DOW every CS, including allies, and other civ on the planet.)

Because it's called Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and like all treaties it is designed with the benefits of Superpowers in mind. Since they already have nukes, it makes perfect sense to ban nukes for everyone else. And I like how the game mirrors that. It pays to rush to Manhattan then ban them, of course the repercussions for owning them and using them still exist.

...Operation Enduring Alaskan Reality TV Freedom ...
Love it! This will be used. This will also give me a few more tools to play with, narrative-wise.

Great update. I laughed when it said, 'Then you see this', and the atomic bomb hit Istanbul.
I'm really glad to hear you say that. I had been worried about how the blue text section would be received, since it was not written in the same style as the rest of the narrative.

...Ok I have 2 rule/suggestions:...
I like both of these a lot. I would like to make one adjustment to the second rule, though, if you agree with it. If Venice attacks me and I only engage in defensive combat within my own borders, I would like to avoid triggering the total war.

Also, I am adding a caveat that Rule #2 cannot be active if parts's Wag the Dog rule is active, and vice versa (Wag the Dog rule: Must fire a Cruise Missile at a random city each turn for twenty turns)

A wave of American nationality...Camelot is increasingly being viewed as a relic of the past...You need to make Washington DC your capital...Bonus points if you can get Washington DC to become the largest city in the world.
I love the idea of the rise of Washington DC-centrism. It really is the natural evoluation of the society I've described in the thread. It's also the only city-specific suggestion that I've received so far, so it will feel unique during play as well.

I would like to switch the order of your two suggestions: "Washington must be the largest city" should be the primary rule, and "Washington becomes your capital" should be the "Bonus Points" condition. I just can't wrap my head around the idea of a nation that can't figure out how to relocate its center of government without provoking an enemy into conquering its cities. I definitely don't think that I can write a good narrative about it. But they idea of a jealous Washington DC that uses its political power to grow itself at the expense of the rest of the nation? Yes, I think I can spin a narrative about that quite nicely.

Assuming you agree with the switch, here are the specific terms that I will enforce when Public Relations Advisor Redwings1340 writes his galvanizing editorials:
  • Each cargo ship/caravan must be reassigned to supply food to Washington DC as soon as the unit can receive a new route.
  • No city except for Washington may build National Wonders or Great Wonders. No non-puppet city may build any building that directly increases tourism (Hotels and Airports).
  • Washington DC construction is limited to National Wonders, Great Wonders, or buildings that increases the city's growth, culture, or tourism (directly or indirectly). No other rule can force Washington to construct a prohibited item while this rule is in effect (i.e. this rule takes priority).
  • These restrictions end when either 1) Washington DC's population and tourism BOTH exceed the population and tourism of every other American city (no ties allowed), or 2) Public Relations Advisor Redwings1340 retires after 50 turns of distinguished service.

Behind redwings1340's editorials, the people's demands are that DC become the capital of the world. Unfortunately, this isn't always practical, and the government's responses (statements to the effect of "this is stupid", and "seriously, we're not going to abandon Camelot") seem to make sense to the public eye. While public relations advisor Redwings1340 is still pushing for the complete abandonment of Africa, the government is winning the PR war, and the public will accept compromise. A statement from a DC mayor to the effect of "well, will you at least, like, feed us or something?" has changed the tides in the debate and is now the focus of all government policy in the region.

Great read so far

How about a crazed politician skilled at sweet talking the public was voted in to be President-for-life? His name is Adolf. He's a Turk, but took American citizenship a week before Istanbul fell. He is now President-for-life and you just switched to autocracy.

...feed us or something?" has changed the tides in the debate and is now the focus of all government policy in the region.
Excellent. I will add it to the approved list.

PS - I'd like to use this incident with Public Relations Advisor Redwing1340 for a running gag throughout the rest of the thread. It's intended to be in good fun, but let me know if it ever feels mean-spirited and I will discontinue it immediately.

Marshall, thanks for the feedback and the suggestion. The game will not let me switch ideologies because public opinion is "content," but I will still add the narrative aspect of your suggestion to the pile. If it comes up, I will describe the young Turk's attempt and failure, and treat the game impact as "no effect."

To Everyone Who Has Posted a Suggestion:
Thank you again. Your input gave me exactly what I needed and vastly exceeded what I had hoped for when I asked for help. I have everything that I need to move forward.

General Notes
I plan to select two one of the rules and put them it into place immediately. I will then add an additional rule, selected at random, every 3 to 6 6 to 15 turns (1d4 + 2 1d10 + 5 for you tabletop gamers out there). EDIT: Increased time in between events. I realized that the previous schedule was way too short for my goal of 1 - 3 events per narrative update while compiling the master event table.

If a rule seems to conflict with another rule, I will try to act within the spirit of both rules. Same thing goes if it is unclear how a rule should apply to an unforeseen situation. Otherwise, the rules are absolute restrictions.

Now that the rules are in place, I plan to play aggressively and will seek to win the game as quickly as I can. If all goes well, I predict that I have maybe 5 to 7 updates left in the thread at this point, or maybe 2 – 3 weeks at my current pace. I will probably have my next update ready around the late Friday / early Saturday timeframe.

There is always room for more suggestions! If you come up with anything, just post it here and I will add it to the pile.

I agree with the changes to my rule #2, but i needs 1 addition. If Venice attacks you, you can't capture any of their cities, or nuke them at all (unless they are also at nukes+ GDR point in which case it's the ultimate war, do what you like.)That way you can't provoke them into attacking just to wipe them out without the everyone else DOWs penalty.

Do what you want with this narrative. Obviously I am not the best policy advisor for the nation, as I am trying to get you to abandon your entire starting continent, so feel free to reflect this in whatever way you want! I look forward to what you write in the future! :)

Dr. Js the 9001st recommends the re-election of Public Relations Advisor Redwings the 1340th for continued use in the story. :D

Excellent, then I will proceed as planned. And I will ensure that Dr. Js the 9001st does as you request :) .

In other news, the event table has been completed. The next event will be #4 (Washington Supremacy), and it will activate 14 turns from now.
