Minstrel Boy
Pre-flight check - I wake up a half dozen Cav and a couple of infantry and airlift them to the French front.
Joanie is down to 9 Cav, though she's still got just over 50 infantry.
IBT - Joanie plops down a couple of towns, and one of them put an airfield in her cultural borders.
Something got nerfed... because Motorized Transportation did not come in. CAII tells me we missed it by 4 beakers.
1430 AD - One of Joanie's combat settler cost us 2 bombers and 2 fighers that were on the airfield that was destroyed when
We're at +370gpt with MT due in 1 at 0% research. I scroll through the empire firing beakerheads and hiring tax collectors. I want to rush some stuff. Fiddling with the specialists gets us to +635gpt.
Okay... I see a REALLY good spot for an airfield, and it's WITHIN our cultural borders. From the tile NW of Toledo our bombers can reach Avignon, Besancon, Tours, Chartres, Rheims, Valencia, Salamanca, and... Paris. Sound like a good spot to you guys?
Now rather deep in enemy territory, I use a cav army to put Cherbourg to the torch. It was defended by a reg infantry and a Vet Cav.
Grenoble suffers a similar fate.
Time to get serious. Cavalry Armies will roll the western flank, while individual units will advance from the east with Artillery and Air Support.
"Bede's Horse" is taken to 2/17 taking out a reg Infantry at Anjar. Another Cav Army takes out the Musketeer. A third Cavalry Army takes out a Rifleman, and the city is ours.
Note to team: If you take a city with movement left you can "Keep" the city long enough to evacuate your troops to a barracks. Those 3 armies will repeat that move in 2 turns.
Keep 'em in FRONT!!! is founded in a spot designed to deny some rails to France.
An aerial reconnaissance of Dijon shows it defended by a Rifleman, making it a very tempting target to hit right away. And that's exactly what I do. At a cost of 1 Elite Cav, Dijon falls.
Went leader fishing going after a redlined Cav at K.E.I.F!!! and caught one of Joanie's settlers... that took her to one.
After evacuating the Armies to Madrid, I abandon 2 cities I took this turn. Plant some infantry in key spots to deny rails to Joanie.
IBT - What troops Joanies sends are sent in ways that ... don't really make a lot of sense. She disbanded a worker IBT... must be hurting her economy. MT comes in... queue up... Amphibioius War.
Turn 2/1435
After a few bombing runs, Valencia falls at a cost of one Cavalry hit point.
An Army blitzes the garrison at Suhar.
After some intense Artillery preparation, Theveste is ours.
I also used artillery to prepare a reception party for our troops in Rouen.
AFTER moving our troops through the recently captured cities of Theveste and Valencia, I abandon those cities. This allowed me to put a stack of artillery 3 tiles into French territory on this turn. Those field pieces are within range of Rheims and Salamanca.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is my version of runnin' and gunnin'.
Rouen and Suhar are likewise abandoned.
IBT - A French Infantryman dies for his country attacking one of our infantry. A French Cavalry is redlined attacking the garrison at Santiago.
Turn 3/1440 AD
Joanie starts the turn with 45 Infantry and 4 Cav.
I spend 1192g cash rushing an army at Entremont. I plan to form at least one Armored Cavalry Regiment this set.
Artillery redline the garrison at Salamanca, then at Rheims. Bombers then kill every unit in both garrisons.
I advance another stack of 21 Artillery pieces on Tours. Grunts to cover.
Four Cavalry Armies do their thing at Carthage.
Bede's Horse is the third (and final) army to join the party at Marseilles.
One of the Armies I used at Carthage has full health and one move left. It goes to Strasbourg.
Turn 4/1445
Joanie starts the turn with 33 Infantry and 2 Cav.
After Artillery prep at Tours, our Bombers go oh-for-the-cruelty of the PRNG, and I have to use 3 hit points to take the city.
Strasbourg falls more easily.
Leptis Magna falls to a cavalry charge.
The 1st Armor advances on Lyons.
Carthage, Rheims, Salamanca, and Marseilles are evacuated and abandoned.
IBT - France advances a handful oftroops leader bait. WLTKD kicks off all over the empire, as the capture of Leptis Magna brough Ivory to Entremont.
Turn 5/1450
Joanie is down to 26 infantry and 2 Cav.
The artillery that worked over Tours can hit Besancon from inside the borders at Tours (are you guys learning yet that you don't have to Raze a city immediately?)
The Arty and Bombers take care of the garrison at Besancon, and the city is ours.
Meanwhile... back at the Maginot Line... I got a MGL while skirmishing half of Joanie's Cavalry.
At Lyons our Artillery redlines all 5 (!) defenders, so I was only able to blitz the first 3 with the 1st Armor.
Let's see... Joanie is down to 12 Infantry, a Cav, a Combat Settler, One Fighter Plane, and some boats.
I spend 130g to investigate Paris. She's got 7 grunts and her entire air farce there. She thinks she'll complete another fighter in 2 turns.
Chartres has 2 Infanty, one is 3/4 thanks to our bombers. With all those woodlands around Chartres, I can only reach it this turn with a Cavalry Army... I decide to go after Paris.
The first thing I do is form another Cavalry Army... I need the speed, as I have too much ground to cross for a tank army.
I even take a couple of tanks and play a little whack-a-barb...hoping to get an Elite tank to go leader fishing against French interlopers... no luck.
*****Siege of Paris
The first Cav army succeeds in blitzing 2 Infantry. Bede's Horse is taken down to a single hit point. The next Cav army in is taken to 5 hit points, but takes 2 grunts down. The next Cav Army in is taken down to a single hit point, leaving a 2/3 Infantry. Got to conserve these last 2 Cavalry Armies... Individual Cavs against paris now... a 4/5 'lite takes out a grunt...the PRNG takes a turn for the better, and a vet cav takes out the last defender and catches Joanie's fighter on the ground.
*****Battle for Chartres - the last French City.
I've got 2 Cavalry Armies left... and one is a bit beat up. The first one in takes out a 3/3 Infantry. DANGIT!!!!! That one didn't have full movement left...
After Action Review:
France has one city and one Infantry left, though she may be able to draft one IBT. I suspect the last settler is on a galley that I managed to find with our destroyers. Though I didn't note it in the log, I sank a few ships along the way.
The navy should be positioned well enough to ferry troops around and take out England. Whoever's after me should be able to take the honor of finishing this game off.
