Go to jail for 10 years for getting head?

As a father of three girls, sure I agree with the law. It is a standard, held equally among all who commit that crime. In order for the law to be '********' or 'unfair' you would have to make the case that it wasnt being enforced to its current standard.

I have no problem with laws like that as long as they are equally apportioned.

If you think it overly harsh, get elected to the Georgia state congress and change it.
What does your partenal status have to do with it?

Are you saying your daughters are completely incapable of making choices about sex until they've reached sixteen years of age?

As a father of three girls, sure I agree with the law.

Because you dont want your daughters to take responsibility for giving BJs.

Why dont you accept that they have as much a role in it as the guy.

Sorry, but if they are under the age of consent and they are caught having sex. They should be tried. And how old are these teenagers having sex, most of them are over the age of consent in their local laws and some under the age of consent but have sex away from other people.

Sorry, But I am not sheltered.

Sorry, but not in the eyes of the law. If you dont like it, take it up to your state congressmen .

Again, the vast majority of US states require a minimal age difference for statutory rape.
So: are you with Georgia, meaning do you agree that 16 years and one day can get 10 years for sex with 16 years tomorrow?
Or are you with the rest of the states that explicitly require the offender to be at least 2 years older than the "victim"?

So how do you know there was no love there, and that what happened was rape?

Sex with a minor, even consentual sex is by definition statutory rape.

Or perhaps you are one of those who think laws, even stupid laws (“people under 16 are forbidden to have sex”), somehow have the power to change reality?

Oh..I suppose you are one of those who thinks we shouldnt have laws since people will do it anyway. We shouldnt have speed limits since people will speed anyway. We shouldnt have consent laws since people will do it anyway. We shouldnt have drinking age limit laws since people will do it anyway.

Such laws dont change reality...but they enforce a standard set by society and one expected of its citizens. I for one, welcome laws that punish young men from preying upon underage women, regardless of their age.

Too many religious fundies getting to write laws on that side of the Atlantic, that seems to be the problem with America.

This has nothing to do with religion. Not one iota. Take your bigotry elsewhere.

Really? So I shouldn't expect to find any teenage pregnancies should I happen to stroll into a high school?

Please. Every teen knows that sex leads to babies. Some don't care. The consiquences are known.

Knowing the consequences doesn't necessarily imply you'll make the right decision.

Lots of people die of lung cancer due to smoking every year too, do you propose we ban ciggerettes to protect people from themselves?

Edit : what skadistic said.

They can't be, not since 2005 (for all minors) and since 1988 (for those under 16.)

And yet Georgia is one of the expections among US states in that it does not require a minimal age difference between the victim and the perpetrator.
Meaning the vast majority of US states acknowledge that the age difference DOES matter.

The law is wrong then. Many laws throughout history have been unfair. As to why see my previous posts, as well as other peoples posts.

Hardly a fair anology. There is no biological or even logical reason to prevent kids with relationships from having safe sex.

THIS ANGERS ME! YOU THINK HE WAS PREYING ON "innocent" woman?

She had just as much a role. They loved eachother. This law is wrong!

a TEEN is not a CHILD. a TEEN has gone through puberty.
In the eyes of the law, any person in the United States under the age of 18 is a minor.

im gonna guess that the people who think this guy is a criminal never got laid in high school - not meant as a diss - just more of an observation.
My personal history of physical intimacy has little to do with Georgia state law.

xanik brings up a good point. IF THEY CAN BE TRIED AS ADULTS FOR MURDER, THEY SURE AS HELL CAN BE OLD ENOUGH TO AGREE TO SEX. you are out of touch with reality if you think teens are "innocent" and "naive" and "victims" when it comes to sex. if anything, the naive ones are you guys.
How dreadful of me to suggest that children shouldn't be engaging in sexual contact!

Ok, the heart of the matter is if a 56 year old man sleeps with a 15 year old child, is it as morally reprehensible as if a 17 year old child sleeps with his 15 year old child girlfriend.

If it is the same then by morality and justice the punishment should be the same, if you think it is not the same, then the punishement is immoral and unjust. Now justify why it is either different or the same, everything else is irrelevant. Try and avoid resorting to illegality, illegality doesn't mean it should remain ethically unchallenged, you can still question the penalties harshness or legitimacy, unless you too are subject to the same automation as the judge in this case in which case you are not allowed to becuase your just doing your job mam.

Can I say only in America or would that be deemed a cliche :)

Apparently you vastly dont understand teen influence and how it works in youth today.

Underage kids cannot consent to sex...therefore they cannot make a responsible choice in regards to it. Hell, their brains have not even developed fully yet.

That is why the 17 year old is in hot water. He had sex with someone who could not legally give consent to such activity. Dont try to tell me he didnt know what he was doing.

He did know what he was doing. And i see nothing wrong with it.

Under the law they were guilty. But does that make it right?

Under nazi law jews had no citizenship. This wasnt right was it?

Both of them knew what they were doing, and nobody would have been prosecuted in the US outside of Georgia.

In other words, kids are stupid. I know that, because I was one.

Beside that, the people smoking are (sometimes) above the age of 18. Once you're 18 (or in the case of alcohol, 21) I really don't give a rat's rear end as to what you do.

I only worry about the laws in my own home state and yes I am with Georgia in having a absolute age set at the age of consent. However less strict on the sentance that any offender under 21 would have to go to juvinile detention for a few months or however the state congressmen hammers it out in working these laws.

The Lone Man said:
... You're wrong.
Do you have proof that I am wrong . You do know that different states have different ages of consent. Sorry, try again and read my post again because I said "In their local laws"

She had just as much a role. They loved eachother. This law is wrong!

I'm going to take this a step further.

Elsewhere in this thread it was mentioned that she 'went down on' several guys at a party.

As such, it was almost entirely her role in what MobBoss considers to be 'preying on innocent teens'.
