My family is planning a trip to Scotland this summer. We'll mostly be in the southern part - the Glasgow and Edinburgh area. What do you recommend that we go see?

I know there are some Scots on this forum - what do you think?

I'd like to see some history, but I'm not too fond of museums.

If you are going between 15 August to 5 September I can recommend the Edinburgh Festival. http://www.eif.co.uk/ Loads of great comedy acts / plays.

Neds, Although don't stare at them for too long ;)

New Lanark is pretty cool, nice scenery (and a bit of history). It's kinda inbetween Glasgow and Edinburgh.
There's Edinburgh Castle, which you can't really miss.
Edinburgh Dungeon. My parents went there and loved it (family thing), it's like a historical guided tour, although you only tour the Dungeon. It's more fun when you actively participate, ie shouting out :)

I can't honestly think of anything else to do with History that i've been to in that area. Scottish history is pretty boring IMO. Just loads of old castles. Scenery is nice though. As others have said, you should take a trip around the Highlands and/or the Outer Hebridean isles -- The nicest part of Scotland.

Edit: Be sure to go to a chip-shop. Ask for a "Wee bag ea' chips wi' brown sauce", tastes lovely :) :slever:

Scottish history, well I know Braveheart and Rob Roy, so I kind of thought there would be a lot of that, but I'll take a look at that. We might not have a whole lot of time, but yeah, I've been told that the scenery is spectacular.

Go to Stirling to see the laughable (and inaccurate) giant statue of Mel Gibson!

Otherwise prepare for Neds, drunkards and down-and-outs.
These all constitute the exports of a worn-out, crap little nation.

And before you cry "Nation Basher!", I am Scottish!

I would save your money and go to Sweden or Germany!

What to see in Scotland? Up a Scotman's kilt is good for a laugh (if you enjoy having no teeth).

Considering no-one wears kilts (except at weddings) you might be hard pressed to find one. :D

Don't bother and come to England, we speak recognisable English here*

*Except in Newcastle, parts of London and Cornwall anyway :mischief:

Just go to a local store and get yourself drunk with scoth. you don't have to pay the ticket to Scotland then and youwill feel the essence of Scotland ;)

Go to the McRay Castle, it runs in my family!!! :D

Check this site out,

Spoilt for museums, pity your not to fond of them theres more than 50 in Edinburgh, if you've time try the Ghost tours under the city they are a must,

Also you'll not be short of a pub or two Edinburgh and Glasgow got hundreds of bars.

Oh, do go and see the doune (spelling?) castle. It's relatively close to stirling, and it's the place where monty python's Holy Grail was filmed partially (most of the indoor-scenes).

I'd agree about the Ise of Skye, get there from Glasgow (a 4 hour drive) on the road to the Highlands (A82), one of the most scenic drives in the world, and the best fish and chips in the world can be found at the Kyle of Lochalsh (where the bridge to Skye is). Take a tent and stay at Glen Brittle camp site in Skye.

Go and see a distillery. You might as well, since you are there. My theory is that the Scottish accent is derived from drinking whisky, test this out for yourself if you want proof.

Climb one of the delightful 1000m 'mountains'.

Erm, go back to the distillery.

Erm....

You know what I always thought was fascinating about the British Isles? They have a surface area of a bit less than the state of California, yet they manage to cram as much if not more rivalry between the north and the south as the United States does.

We do even better than that; we have loads of subsections of rivalries with various historic battles still fresh in peoples minds centuries later. :) English v Scots, Northern English v southern softies ;) , Yorkshire v Lancashire (War of the Roses etc). :crazyeye:

You're more at risk from the gorangau people that plague princess's street than the Neds, man they are annoying, and they try to take your money as well.
