The Golden Goal rule in football is just rubbish. It might work in ice hockey, but what happens now is

a) both teams play defence and long passes to each other (boring) and wait for the penalty shoot-out.

b) one team tries to take risks but lose because the other team defends and use the counter-attacks to great effect.

Solutions:
a) scrap the penalty shoot-out. This means that the teams have to attack in order to win - or

b) scrap the Golden Goal rule and give us back the good old extra time. At least now UEFA quits the Golden Goal in European Championships, and I really hope that FIFA does the same with the World Cup (Lovro said so in this thread).

You are right - the golden goal was a good idea that didn't work out so well on the field.

Your idea to scrap the penalty shoot-out will win cheers in the Netherlands! :crazyeye: Now teams will have to score to beat them, instead of holding out for a draw...

"Wait for the penalty shoot-out" is the key phrase. If you
don't get rid of the shootout, teams will just wait for it,
golden goal, or no golden goal (sudden death). So I don't think sudden death is the problem. Get rid of the penalty shootout,
and the rest of the problems will IMO solve themselves.

Like Italy...

Penalties are interesting and make the game very exciting. Also if you remove penalties then you have to have some sort of golden goal situation or else the game would never end...

The Golden Goal is quite interesting and even without it, teams will still defend heavily for penalties so I am not sure whether you would really gain anything.

@ Hakon is this quote from Soul Music?
Azhural, Klatchian elephant herder - "It's fifteen hundred miles to Ankh-Morpork, we've got three hundred and sixty-three elephants, fifty carts of forage, the monsoon's about to break and we're wearing…we're wearing…sort of things, like glass, only dark…dark glass things on our eyes…"

keep the golden goal and the penalty shootout because despite what you say it DOES make the games more interesting

even though I'm an England fan and penalty shootouts can't ever, ever we won by us by some curse that probably God has placed upon us

Away with the Golden Goal!

It does lead to a more defensive game, at least in the first 20 minutes of the overtime. After that it has always been more defensive, as nobody wanted to lose shortly before reaching the penalty shootout. But in the first 20 minutes you were able to play more offensive, as you still had the potential chance to equalize should the opponent score on a counter attack.
With the Golden Goal there's fear of failing during the whole overtime and that damages the game. Besides that it's even more cruel than losing on penalties, because there you also have an equal chance.

The penalties have to be kept, the game must be decided at some point, you can't play on forever, and there's usually no time in the schedule for a rematch. Besides that penalty shootouts are fun. :D

Penalty shoot outs are interesting but I wouldn't call them fun, especially if a team I support is playing...

Well fun may be the wrong word, exciting describes it better.
I have overall had more positive experiences with them, so my view may be a little biased.
But even besides that it's still the best method to come to decide the game if there's no decision in overtime.

penality shoot outs are great theatre. As for the golden goal, although it has created some dull games, it's not as if extra time was ever that exciting anyway. There's great potential for games which go to the golden goal to be interesting (England v Germany in Euro 96, for instance) if the teams are prepared to try and take the initiative.

England vs. Germany games have always been intense. But the stupid Golden Goal takes away the chances for games like the legendary 4-3 between Italy and Germany in the World Cup 1970.

Just reach a shootout against Holland, your curse will end. :p

Either that or they will be bringing in people out of the stands to continue the kicks... "Still even at 8 apiece after 57 penalty shots. Will the bloke in seat 117f please come to the spot while the crew repairs the bent post?"

I think its just fine. You have to do something. Some of these games would go on forever. As a Canadian,I have seen plenty of double, triple, quad overtimes in Hockey with no end in site. The teams pull back into a shell and the play is just awful and sloppy.Gets worse as the players continue to fatigue. The players run risk of becoming exhausted well before the tourney gets rolling.

You've had 90 odd minutes to decide this.

You could not.

Here is another 30,first in wins.

Still couldn't..

Here ya go..PKs.

They should have at least as many pks as positions though. If there has been a sending off or 2,too bad..you kick with less.Even the keepers should get a go.That way at least the whole team is in on it.Heck, maybe even the headcoaches should get a spot ball :D

I luv penalty kicks :goodjob:

Penalty Shoot out is an even more stupid way to determine who wins than golden goal.
They have nothing to do with the game flow and with goal scoring chances, nor with gameplay. They also lead to boring tactics - "Practice penalties and play bunker".
If a football game is tied even after over time it should be over and replayed a few days later.

You can't schedule an event like a World Cup if you have consider replays.And..how much is one team expected to give?....theoretically,one team could end up playing something like 10 games worth of minutes while another just plays 4 games worth.

Long live the penalty shoot out :p

WOW :crazyeye:
I never knew there were people who liked the pk shootout.

I'd like to see the whole team take penalties 11 v 11. Its a team game. Then you could come back after missing the first 3 - and the order would be an interesting tactical situation too.....

Have the Germans ever lost a penalty shoot-out?

Yes, the final of EURO 76 actually...

You can't do 11 vs. 11 simply for the possibility of one or both teams not having all 11 players anymore. I think 5 is okay.

I'd like to widen it out so defenders have to take penalties too.

I think a team has to have at least 8 players on the pitch otherwise the game is stopped (Happened in English first divsion last season at Sheffield United when they went down to 7 players!) so how about 8 penalty takers each ....

The more players involved, ther fairer it is; and the less dependent on one or two misses the final result will be.

Plenty of defenders take penalties, even goalies do. Chilavert has scored plenty of goals in his career, for example. There is no position requirement. Strikers typically are more experienced shooters, but many defenders can place a ball just as perfectly.
