Googlefied Geography Test

Your guess was
0.057km
from the correct location: 6474 points

It was a shot from Shedds Aquarium towards Downtown Chicago.

Finally got one where I landed on the same continent as the spot. Was wrong for a location in Sweden picked Russia. Two were in the US. One was in London ON, Canada, I thought it was near Toronto. The closest was one in the Middle of Western Australia with a sign that said Gwalla Museum. 12,277 points.

The quest is too addictive. I did get a .033 km for a spot on Myrtle Beach SC. US.

Mostly they added user-made panoramic shot to the game. Where you cannot look around at all - you have that one 360 panorama, and no possibility of looking to see what's around it.

And those panoramas are usually taken in the middle of the wilderness, far, far, far from any distinctive signs.

I got a couple of them - one I figured out was in Australia but I was still almost 1000km out, the second I guessed was somewhere in Scandinavian and i was only 124km out.

Lucked out on the two 360s by actually getting within a few hundred km of each. I closed the score but IIRC it was around 16,000.

I thought the US version might be easier, but it only spawned me on lonely country roads in the midwest. Score: 16,268.

I remember getting lots of guesses in Australia. Most times I did guess it was Australia, but halfway across the country.

A few times I got closer than 15 metres though. :mischief:

I got 7,965 on my try, but i am not too displeased at the result. Twice I go the right country but wrong region and in one of them I was in the right state, but still a long way away from it.

England (London) => Russia (St Petersburg) A river scene
USA (Alabama) => USA (Texas) was a swamp road (closest)
Australia (WA) => USA (Colorado) was an outback scene with single dashed lines, hence the confusion and the scenery looked very similar to around here. (longest)
France => Azores A coastal scene that looked Mediterranean is style, so that was my reasoning
Alaska (Central) => Alaska (Far SW corner) It screamed Alaska to me but the distance was so big even though the right state.

Oooo I remember this :D

Haven't played it since middle of last year. Best score was 31849, though they might've changed the scoring in the meantime?

If the best score is 6500 per find, then a perfect score would be 32500. Probably no change in scoring.

Hmmm, I believe I am the blue signals, am I?

It hurts now.

We're sorry but this site is not accessible from the UK as it is part of our international service and is not funded by the licence fee. It is run commercially by BBC Worldwide, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BBC, the profits made from it go back to BBC programme-makers to help fund great new BBC programmes. You can find out more about BBC Worldwide and its digital activities at www.bbcworldwide.com.

I can understand them restricting some services that we pay for to the UK... but to make something funded commercially available to anywhere BUT the UK...

I played this about a year and a half ago. I think my best was around 12,000 points. Occasionally got the right general area, too. Road markers helped.

Tonight:

1. One-lane road in desert-y middle of nowhere, guess Australia, it's Arizona. 14,274 km off.
2. Fairly arid one-lane road with some small mountains around and some terraces; guess Peru, turns out to be southern Spain. 8945 km off; quick improvement!
3. Not-even-really-on-a-road by an arid coast. A few boats but no cars or people yet. Guess the Canaries but it's Brazil. 4283 km off.
4. Lush single-lane road. Guess Ghana; it's in Thailand. 11043 km off. At least the latitude was close.
5. Two-lane road with double yellow stripe and mountains on all sides. Looks like taiga. Clouds are low to the ground, which means probably high elevation. Hedge my bets between Alaska and Canada; turns out to be near Denali Park in Alaska. 831 km off.

4967 points total. Certainly not my best round!

Incidentally, the last time I played I recall the game being on its own website and fullscreen, not on the BBC. Maybe the BBC acquired it in the interim.

There do seem to be two different versions being played in this thread. One has a high score for each location of 6500, and the other one the score is 5000. The one with 5000 is full screen, and is a different website.

Here is what Igot.

First guess I saw a sign, but guessed the wrong country. 1774km, 2271 points.
Round 2: 131km, 3013 points. Saw sign saying Gibraltar.
Round 3: 3135km, 1775 points. Guessed Iceland instead of PEI.
Round 4: 2225km, 1915 points. Saw characters. Guessed Hong Kong.
Round 5: 4177km, 1559 points. Guessed wrong coast.
