GOP Debates - Basement Thread

Ben Carson spoke well.

I think a question about faith isn't a silly question to be honest, particularly on the Republican side of the party. Many of these Republicans are probably fake Christians to begin with - who are only nominally Christian to satisfy the religious wing of their party and in truth care next to nothing about acting as their brother's keeper - like it seemed evident from Walker's response

He was surprisingly humorous as well. Too bad his views are so draconian and incredibly backwards.

Well, it certainly wasn't a surprise coming from Fox News. But no, I don't think it has any place being asked in a supposedly free and open secular society.

There was an African American person ?

"May the odds be ever in your favor."

That's an easy one. Help Israel finally wipe Iran off the face of the map. Then seal the border from those godless heathen. Then revoke Obamacare so the Christian healthcare industry can become even richer off the suffering of others.

Cruz is doing his best to be father, son, and the holy ghost in that picture

I noticed when they did that Walker was nodding like an NPC caught in an animation loop.

yup, Walker looked like a bobblehead as Carson explained people are people when he's operating on them in response to a question about race relations conveniently thrown his way.

No follow up questions about the flag of the good Christians who betrayed their country so they could have the brain surgeon's ancestors pick their crops.

Or did I miss the confederate flag question?

I don't think there was one.

Trump likely won among people already excited by the prospect of a Trump presidency. I'd say Kaisich and Rubio were tbe actual winners. We'll see how much that really changes.

I'd call that somewhat accurate.

The Trump faithful (the disaffected) saw nothing to change their minds, and the less disaffected saw no reason to jump aboard the rebellion train. Same with Rand Paul and the "different kind of Republican" train.

Christie getting into a shouting match with Paul mostly killed him I think. Paul can afford it, because his supporters are locked to him and he wasn't getting anyone else anyway. Despite the fact that Christie totally put the wood to him, all that Republicans will come away with is that Christie is a loudmouth.

Jeb at far too many times seemed to be channeling his brother. If he got a point in the polls for every word that he mangled the campaign would be over and he would be the clear winner.

Cruz control lost. He tried to outcrazy Trump, and failed. The crazies aren't likely to buy it, and the not crazies probably did.

Carson was clearly the smartest guy on the stage. Too bad 40% of Republicans couldn't hear what he said because they were busy saying "what is that black guy doing there?" Most of the remaining 60%, while not put off by a black candidate, are well aware that he has no shot.

Huckabee played right into the hands of the questioners. When asked "how can you possibly win the general election when 90% of the country disagrees with you stance on abortion, and about 60% are absolutely terrified by it?" I admire his forthrightness, but "I believe what I believe so too bad for them" is not politically effective. The odd part is that Walker went down with that ship. I didn't know he was so vulnerable on the issue.

I think Kaisich was probably the most challenging candidate on the stage from a Democrat's point of view. If the rest of the gang doesn't hang the "Obamacare collaborator" label on him he may be far more dangerous than I gave him credit for.

Rubio took a bite out of Walker and Bush. Whether it will be enough to get him seriously into the running I don't know. If he does get into the serious running he has some skeletons that anyone with a strong and dirty campaign staff will kill him with though.
