GOTM-05 Pre-Game Discussion

I must admit that I am happier with the difficulty level this month. I got beaten last month in the 1700's on my way to a cultural victory :(

Well although I am still trying desperately to get enough time in to finish GOTM 4 ( I am sure I will :D )

This Game looks like alot of fun.

To easy of Difficulty? That's Ok Everyone knows we will win, try to beat the humans playing score ;)
To Slow of a Speed? Taht Ok Try to conquer the World by 1 AD, then it won't be a long game

The only thing that worries me with a difficulty below settler, the ability to pop a warrior or settler from a hut arises, which can grealy swing the early game.

Oh btw anyone up for a OCC? :goodjob:

Never was interested of stending an hour movinf a lot of units and try to milk as high score as posible, simply no fun.

Yeah - epic might be the 'problem' - I think warlord is OK.

The reason I've gone for warlord is that over the last couple of months, the increasing difficulty has resulted in quite a few people losing, and less people submitting (although people are still downloading the game).
Reason for last GotM to be a bit of falure in my mind was the map used, not the dificulty level.
Alex was intentionally or not intentionally weakened by luck of Iron and was put very near player. Result of that was that any strategy bare stright bronse working/early war was destined to fall due luck of posible expansion and weekeness of Alex as a neybor.
That was reason of lot of looses. If you read report, you will see that only early warmondering who team with Viky on Alex succed. All other strategies, even been valid one's did not had a chance.

It will be interesting to see how the top players handle a steam roller over the AI's at War lord.

I vote for Chalenger to be a 6CC (yeah I know it is not a democracy, but you know what I mean).

if you say so mutineer, I rather think the difficulty level is the culprit for the reduction.

I mean, alex was alex...he was not a concern until he got iron or later, so if you crippled him early or built a good military early you were fine. However, the difficulty level was absolutely crazy(coming from a guy who has not yet won more than once on prince). I managed to subdue alex, and I even outlived 2 other AI, but I was never a serious threat to win the game.

Well for everyone who thinks the settings are too easy... How about adding a challenge. I recently read a SG where they had to play with 0% science as of Writing (ie after the the ancient era). Only source for science are scientists, trading or demanding tribute. Anyone want to take that challenge? :)

well, i just won a conquest in 1025BC - tho this was a forested start

which makes me think maybe wandering east to the expected forests could be the best move - just a big gamble on how far east we need to go.

hahaha...

3650BC: Lost settler and protecting explorer to barbarian bear

:king:

I played a practice game. I wiped out two civs with a warrior rush before 2000 BC, and just went crazy with REX. Hooked up Iron and Bronze, when all the other civ's had archers. Used my workers to get roads built outwards, and just built an army. I quit at 1AD when it was obvious I was going to win by conquest. Two more civ's were about to fall to my armies, leaving just two more in the game (with about 20 units of fighters for me)

Basically, it was only

I joined GOTM on March... That was my first time playing the Emperor... I had only one win on Monarh before... I was mutilated for ten times in a row (that is why i am not submitting), but I managed to win once... I am more experienced now... If there aren`t serious handycaps on challenger... I am not playing... Just kidding... I will play... going for a space win as fast as I can :) (never done that)

Cool. I guess you've seen the results of last month's game and they weren't pretty. ;)

I'm definitely up for something easier, after losing the last two. My last loss was so brutal that it made me stop playing for a few weeks. I tried replaying the game a few times on sunday and it felt like Groundhog Day. No matter what I tried, the game kept finding new ways to eliminate me early.

Warlord is a bit easier than I would have expected, but a complete change of pace should be interesting.

I'm not boasting, because my score was only a little over 10,000, but I for one beat the game without any warmongering whatsoever, playing a strictly peaceful, builder strategy--and that was on Challenger setting (no techs). So it's not quite true that all other strategies didn't have a chance.

Last week's GOTM was cool. This one is cool too.

I agree completely, will see what the next GOTM will entail.

I will definitely move the settler to the plains hill.

...but I'm 95% certain that the tile W and NW of the plains hill are both floodplains.

The tile S of the plains hill and desert hill are both desert, the tile S of the Mountain is forest(probably forest, plain)

@Dave,
Assuming there aren't any bonuses nearby and assuming Thrallia is right about having desert south off the hills, would you still consider settling on the plains hill to be better then say settling 1W?

I suppose it's a matter of choosing between the short term advantage of the extra hammer from citycenter and the long term advantage of having an almost completely cottageable (if that's english) surrounding.

So I'm looking at the map, and I do think those are two deserts to the south.

I'm tempted to move the scout NE, and then N, NE,E. There are forests over there...could do some chopping?

Pleased to have a lower difficulty level this month, although slightly surprised to drop down as far as Warlord. Only trouble is if I fail to win this one it's going to be seriously embarrasing!

Just off to practice.

i'm in the group that havn't been able to sucessful finish a game from GOTM2-4 :( this does look crazy easy though. I smell a 4/1 joke too!

If you move 1W, you're still getting those visible deserts in the city radius. We're really talking about exchanging 2 plains and 1 grassland for 3 black tiles.

If you play for a military win you will not come close to working all the tiles. If you play for diplo/space I think you will still benefit by having your 2nd (and 3rd 4th 5th...) cities built sooner.

O, come on all you sad bears. You know any game set for April 1 will have some twisted and evil component that alone will pay for the price of admission.
Perhaps ...
1/ All cities with fish resources will randomly lose 1 pop due to shark attacks.
2/ Golden Age bonus's will be increased tenfold, every nation on the planet declares war on you due to envy.
3/ All diplomacy is conducted through smilies ... :)
4/ There is one source of copper, iron, oil ... planet-wide, and you ain't near it.
5/ Al Gore replaces Leonard Nimoy, Internet can be researched before Pottery.
(I'm banking on the Energizer Bunny replacing barbarians myself) :mischief:
