Gotm 28 Errors

I've now zipped the files in the original directory and changed the links on the game page to point to the zipped copies..

Firstly, I would like to thank AlanH for his quick work this morning in making the uploaded save files a bit easier to download for the AOL / Netscape users :goodjob:

I am pleased to say that after a rather abortive start, I think that we have now sorted out all the errors. :) The packs available from the GOTM announcement page now contain the revised files.

However: Please note that the zip files also contain a text file called 'pediaicons.txt'. This will have to be installed in a directory that is based on the game version you are using.

For Civ3 1.29f / Mac players:
Place the Pediaicons.txt file in your Civilization\TEXT\ directory (it will overwrite the old PediaIcons.txt file).

For PTW players:
Place the PediaIcons.txt file in your CIV3PTW\Scenarios\GOTM25\TEXT directory. It should overwrite the file that is already there.

If you downloaded the game prior to today, and managed to get the game to load, then you DO NOT NEED TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW PACKS AND START AGAIN! You should be able to play the game normally, and the only errors that you should get will be when the game has finished. You can prevent these errors by installing the appropriate pediaicons.txt file as described above, but the save file itself is largely unchanged (one leader name has been changed only, and this will not affect gameplay).

In summary: Please accept my apologies for the rough start to this months' GOTM. Hopefully everything should now be OK, but let me or one of the GOTM staff know if you experience any problems. :)

Since this thread is titled GOTM28 Errors, I'll high-jack it. My GOTM28 game is suffering a continual CTD after I build the Military Academy. Once I close the pop-up, the game crashes to my desktop, every time. :( I sent a zipped save file to Alan. Anyone else want in on it?

No problem found here. I suggest a reinstall.

Figuring Alan is probably asleep, I switched builds, wasting 200+ shields. But, I now have a new shiny bank. ;) Play on!

Not asleep, just busy! You can have the save if you like. But I'd be concerned that something else is about to break. A reinstall takes very little time if you use my installers :)

Okay, I will. Better now than later.

Edit in: Reinstall complete and runs save! Thanks for the motivation, Alan!

Did i miss something? (I copied the pedia file in the appropriate directory)
Sounds like you haven't followed the installation instructions :p . That file was part of the gotm24 add on pack, which is one of those required to play gotm28.

Hi Guys,

First, congratulations on this site and a thank you to the people who create GOTMs. I just love the idea of playing from the same starting position as everyone else and the following discussion.

Since this is the first GOTM I played, I'm not sure if my problem is a specific GOTM 28 error, or a more general problem of add-ons.
I play [civ3] 1.29f.

When using F6, the rectangles display the correct thumbnails. But when I right-click to get details, some new units from the add-ons are just blue or purple squares (in Iron Working, Feudalism, Chivalry, and Astronomy). Also, the slider displayed when more than 4 units are available does not shift the pictures/links although the slider itself moves (Bronze Working, Iron Working, and Chivalry).

Sometimes, the detailed different description has something else's text (e.g. Civil Defense has its own properties but the text of SAMs).

I probably did something stupid, but I don't know what. I installed the 129 patch and then the 21, 22, 23, 24, 24 graphics, and 25 add-ons as well as the update for pediaicons (in this sequence).

Has anybody else had this problem? Or better yet, a solution? If this turns out to be a new problem, I'll go over the civilopedia with a fine comb to see if anything else is wrong.

The Civilopedia does have some gaps, and uses the text of existing units to fill in for new ones in some cases. I don't have PTW, so I can't comment on the specific issues you have seen, but if you have downloaded and installed the packs correctly then what you see is what you get. I'm sure additonal material for the enhanced Civilopedia would be very welcome if anyone wants to contribute.

Hi, I think I just won GOTM28, but I'm not sure. **civ number 2** recently completed the UN, and I being one of the candidates for election, probably got elected. I don't know. What I do know is that in 1948 I got a nice error message: "Error reading file. Missing entry in text\PediaIcons.txt WON_SPLASH_78" Reloaded, tried again, same thing. I'm playing Civ3 v 1.29 and have installed setup files from GOTMs 21 (full install) 22, 23, 24, and 25. Does anybody know what's up?
